Stay away from espn.com for tonight at least. They have a cover story on there right now that is particularly objectionable. It has to do with the game that shall not be mentioned. You have been warned.

Rams fans have to cringe every time they watch Vinatieri raise his hands, and we are doomed to watch Tyree forever. That was an epic fucking failure, and a defining sports moment. Just slip in all of those "Glory Years" DVDs if your stomach turns everytime the current sports media raises the question "are the Patriots chokers?" It's all fair.

Mike & Mike had Mark Schlereth on their radio show this morning. Schlereth was one of Jay Cutler's more prominent Twitter detractors last Sunday afternoon, and his appearance was promoted by the hosts as an opportunity for him to finally inform the listeners why Cutler’s actions were so bad. After more Cutler bashing by Schlereth and Mike Golic (mostly based on insinuations that Cutler is not a popular guy in the league), he finally launched into a long-winded explanation that boiled down to ‘Well, what he did - it just didn’t look right to me.’ When asked why, if Jay Cutler was such a wimp, did Brian Urlacher and others stand up from him after the game, it was brushed away with ‘They’re his teammates – of course they’re going to stand up to him’ (I guess John Hannah never got the memo when he criticized Tony Eason all those years ago).

The situation screamed for a co-host with some balls to challenge both Schlereth and Golic and call out their bullshit, but Mike Greenberg will never be that man.

I don't know who (if he has one) Wallace Matthews's editor is, but he's doing a pretty shitty job. It's an especially poor job, because the quotes I'll give are used as major evidence to prove his (admittedly correct) point that Derek Jeter is no longer a great player.

In between, Derek Jeter went 0-for-4, got hit by a pitch and grounded out with Brett Gardner on second and a chance to put the Yankees ahead in the ninth inning.
But the days when you feared Jeter in the situation he came up in last night -- game tied, runner on second and one out in the top of the ninth -- are long over, and it was hardly a surprise when Jeter tapped out to third

How about this one from ESPN senior writer David Schoenfeld:

With two outs, Brett Gardner homers off Matt Albers to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. New York’s two homers didn’t clear much more than 600 feet combined.

For the fifth straight week, the Philadelphia Phillies are the No. 1 team in the Power Rankings.

The New York Yankees rise one spot to No. 2 in the Week 19 rankings, while the Boston Red Sox fall one spot to No. 3. The Atlanta Braves climb two spots to claim No. 4, and the Texas Rangers stay in the No. 5 spot for the second straight week.

Yep, that makes sense. Two of three this weekend and 10/12 overall is just enough to swap places with the Yanks.

ESPN has a heads up poll up about who is at the Center of the Sports Universe right now with Boston. Is it Dallas? With a Mavericks title, the Rangers (I'll give them Arlington. We get Foxboro after all) having been to the WS last year, and looking good this year, the Cowboys being an always popular team, and the Stars... existing? Is it Pittsburgh? With the Steelers and Penguins both having won titles within the last 3 years, and looking like contenders for the upcoming season, and the Pirates showing promise, you could make a case for them as Boston's rivals. New York and LA are always going to be around. But, ESPN has decided that the biggest rival for Boston as Sports Capital of the World, is... Philadelphia, they of the 2008 MLB Championship . But hey, the Iggles and Flyers look good on paper, amirite?

Oh God, this article...

It's an article for ESPN the magazine on "The Growing Gulf between Tom Brady and the fans".

It features such gems as:

Strange as it is to say, while Brady is certainly appreciated here in Boston, he is no longer truly loved.
The rest of the country may see him as the ultimate symbol of Boston's decade of dominance, but these days Tom Brady is no Bostonian.
(Talking about Paul Pierce) It's a hard thing to convince someone from outside Boston that a black guy from Inglewood, Calif., has become more a part of the city than our lily-white quarterback, but it's the truth. We've had our ups and downs with Pierce and come out on top.
Consider this: What if Tom Brady weren't a winner? Say he was a very good quarterback who'd never hoisted the Lombardi trophy. Would Boston fans still put up with all those exotic extracurriculars? "He would have been run out of town," Allison opines.

This is fun.

Consider this: What if Tom Brady spent every weekend going to colleges and raping coeds? Say he enjoyed showing up uninvited to Christenings and Bar Mitzvahs and heckling kids? Would Boston fans still put up with all those exotic extracurriculars? "He would have been run out of town," Allison opines.

Consider this: What if the only way Tom Brady could orgasm was to play an Atari 2600 with a plastic bag wrapped tightly around his neck? Say he began every morning with a Tomwhich and it includes two pieces of cake as bread and a healthy dollop of Crisco as the meat? Would Boston fans still put up with all those exotic extracurriculars? "He would have been run out of town," Allison opines.

Consider this: What if during the offseason Tom Brady would dress a man up in a deer costume, give him a 15-minute head start and then hunt him for sport? Say Tom Brady dug up the corpse of John Lennon and screamed, "Who's bigger than Jesus now, Egg Man"? Would Boston fans still put up with all those exotic extracurriculars? "He would have been run out of town," Allison opines.

Oh wait, he wasn't run out of town.

I do live in New England and am a Jets fan so this is going to come from left field.

Anyway, I HATE Bill Belichick. Hate. More then any figure in sports. I listen to his radio interviews on WEEI hoping he'll die in the middle of them. I really can't stand the guy. He's a awful, awful, awful, awful person.

I also hate the Patriots.

I don't hate Tom Brady. I wish he gets hurt on every play but I don't hate him. I do find him really strange. He's become the hyper-celebrity in that he seems to live a lifestyle that few of us can grasp. Honestly, if you told me 7 years ago that he would marry Giselle and do the whole NYC/Paris thing and live that lifestyle, I'd tell you "Oh, so he's out of the league by 2011 or just kinda sucks." because you'd think he'd mail it in.

But that's not the case at all. From all accounts, he doesn't work as hard as he did but that's coming from a place where he was the hardest working man in the NFL and impossible to keep up.

He just seems like a guy that is really strange and is wired differently then everyone else. I don't mean he doesn't get along with others or even in bad way but it's pretty rare that you have a guy that can hang out with the model crowd and be one of the best QB's in the game. Then when you throw in the Baby Mama Bridget shit in there (in other words, Tom Brady made a mistake there which he doesn't seem to make many of at all on any level but the one he makes is pretty huge)...Yeah... Tom Brady is a strange duck.

I don't understand the timing of this article. Brady was just the first unanimous MVP in NFL history. The team is off to a 2-0 start and Brady's put together his best back-back games ever. Why even writer this right now? ESPN has a lot of idiots.

This pretty much sums it up on all accounts and I don't think it's a derogatory comment to say that the guy is wired differently than pretty much everyone else.

On the subject of the new Boston themed ESPN magazine in general: what the hell is the point of this?

Are they trying to piss the entire country off for no reason? Would anyone outside of New England honestly want to read this? As a fan of all the major Boston teams, I guess this is supposed to be porn for me, but even I have no interest in picking this up. "Count the rings, bitch!"

Nice rant from Drew Magary at KSK ( Link ).

Isn't the parking spot given to the hardest offseason worker? If he used to get it and now he doesn't, doesn't that imply something? Just because (double negative alert!) it's been massively overreported doesn't mean it isn't valid.

Beyond the whole parking lot thing, is it really hard for you to believe that a married/MVP/3-time champion Brady spends maybe 95% of the time at the office than a 6th-round draft pick with a defense-led championship and 'only' good stats did? Especially when you consider that as he gets older and presumably smarter, he gets more out of the time he puts in (thus satisfying the cognitive dissonance of your 'gets better and works less hard' comment)?

I hate it when people try to paint Brady as a slacker celeb. I hate it just as much when people start frothing at the mouth over any insinuation that Brady might not be quite the maniac he was. The truth (shocking!) is probably somewhere in the middle.

Personally, I think it would be kind of strange if he was still the "hardest working Patriot in the offseason."

At some point, the new(er) guys, less accomplished team leaders, should step up and lead by example. It would be odd if Brady didn't cede that role to some other folks after a few years.

I mean, seriously: if he still won that parking space every year, it would A) devalue the award because it would just look like the star player got it every year; and B) de-incentivize other players from going for it because it would appear a fait accompli.

Frankly, it would not shock me at all if Brady and Belichick talked about it several years back (after his 3rd time winning it or whatever) and reached an understanding that he wasn't going to win the award any more.

There's a reason why, in corporations, Vice Presidents aren't typically eligible for "Employee of the Year": the game starts to look rigged.

The parking spot is given to the guy who works hardest at OTAs/minicamps, not the guy who works hardest. All it implies is that he doesn't attend as many OTAs as he used to. Or it implies the Patriots aren't keen on giving their all-universe QB the OTA award every year. So, in other words, it implies whatever you want.

I was speaking to the fact that some in the media - and some fans - seem to believe he has inevitably 'slipped' with his work ethic because he trains in LA (where his son lives). For no reason, mind you, other than some projecting (i.e., if I was Brady, I would probably work less hard!). People like Brady don't tend to let up when they've achieved dizzying success, yes?

But, like, whatever. 'The truth is probably somewhere in the middle' and 'doesn't that imply something' are useless comments. I don't accept that the 'truth is probably somewhere in the middle.' It's a nice hedge phrase thrown around a lot on this forum, though. All I know is I've been around people like Brady, and they don't think/act like the 'normal' person, which is where most of this comes from, IMO. It seems difficult to believe someone who has three rings, two MVPs, fame, and a supermodel wife would not let up. But that's more a referendum on our own mentality than anything, I would posit.

In any case, whatever he's doing seems to work, from a leadership and performance perspective. I actually think the more interesting takeaway from peoples' perceptions of Brady is the thought that he was 'better' or 'more clutch' when they were winning, a prime example of selective memory, inability to separate the player from the team, and general idiocy.

Pretty sure Jerod Mayo pretty much lives Gillette during the offseason(when he's been allowed to do so). Brady has a lot more pull now, so he probably feels comfortable asking O'Brien to work with him privately or call Belichick almost anytime he wants. Mayo doesn't have that yet, so he has to show up all the time so that he can use the Pats' facilities. I bet that spot is given to the guy who's at Gillette all the time and now the guy who actually has the parking spot influences the younger guys, like Mayo as a rookie, can see that guy with the parking spot and say "Fuck, I can work harder than that guy." That young guy was probably supposed to be McCourty t his year, but hey lockouts happen.

Here's another article to add to the ESPN.com is pathetic fire: Gene Wojciechowski: Theo Epstein's task: Cubs conundrums. By his analysis, a GM's success with a starting pitcher's contract is based on dollars/win. I'm surprised he didn't mention Aceves' $65k/win.

Oh, and don't expect the 71-91 Cubs to rebound like the 2011 Diamondbacks because "the Cubs don't have what the D-backs have." Yes, that is the extent of his explanation.

Seriously, there were SO many better ways to make that arugment.

And including Josh Beckett on a list of free agent / extension duds list makes no sense. Beckett made $17M this year and was worth $19.2M according to fangraphs.

This is about ESPN Radio, not ESPN.com but...

I had the misfortune of listening to Mike and Mike this morning for five minutes. Greenberg brought up the "Suck for Luck" campaign that is being discussed in the sports world. Only he called it "Stink for Luck". Then he remarked that management told him and others at ESPN they can't use "the other s word" on their airwaves. Mickey apparently takes offense to such harsh words.

I'm glad someone called out Gene Wojciehowski. I seriously don't think he gets enough shit. It's possible because he's boring awful, as opposed to egregiously, claw your eyes out awful like Rick Reilly (who he desperately tries to be), but he's still awful. His most recent piece about the World Series was disjointed, lazy horseshit writing that has no business being published anywhere. I don't even disagree with every point. It's just that he made all his points by vomiting every idea he has onto the page in one messy go, good and bad, with no attempt at crafting a damn argument.

I suppose we could create Wojciehowski Pinata thread, but, quite frankly, he's not worth our complete attention.

That said, here's the latest cow pie from Gene: The World Series: It's broken! Fix it!.

Gene believes that the World Series should be a five-game series because in the last 13 years only two World Series have gone to a game 6 or 7 and it places a greater importance on every game. It will tighten the margin of error! It will create drama! You know, because most teams half-ass it until it's an elimination game or close to it. Under his guidelines, the Yankees would've won the WS in 2001.

Gene also believes that rosters should have a 10-pitcher limit:
This way you speed up the middle-to-late innings of a game. Plus you reward a team for having quality relievers who can get right- and left-handed hitters out. And if they can't, you have the added possibility of a late-inning rally and comeback. Nothing wrong with that.
Ooo, ooo, and Gene wants to "flip-flop" the DH requirement so the NL home crowd and AL home crowd can see a different type of baseball. Great idea to completely screw with one of the points of home field advantage in the sport's championship. Forget doing it in interleague play; let's do it when the World Series is on the line.

And if the games aren't long enough, Gene wants to adopt the NFL's challenge flag for managers.

Are LOOGYs this much of a plague on the game that he wants to punish teams that use them? And I think there IS something wrong by manufacturing "drama" by handicapping teams' bullpens. People like 9th inning rallies off Mariano Rivera. They don't like 7-run innings against a team's long-relief/backup starter in the 7th inning when the rest of the 'pen is taxed.

The basis for the entire article is that the World Series used to draw 35 million viewers in the 1970s, and draws nowhere near that anymore. Never mind that not one of his solutions will fix that (those days are long, long gone by). He doesn't seem to realize that things were much, much different then (much less competition on TV, the NFL hadn't yet blossomed into the media-hogging juggernaut it is today, 24/7 coverage of college sports, etc.). But cutting the series length to 5 will fix it? All that will do is make the postseason even more of a crapshoot.

Amy K. Nelson has bolted Bristol for SBNation and YouTube TV.

Pat Forde, Bruce Feldman and now Nelson have all left ESPN over the past few months. It seems that SBNation is ramping up a video channel through YouTube to produce original content and Nelson will be at the forefront of that. She joins Rob Neyer over at SBNation.

To be fair, who doesn't masturbate in front of Erin Andrews? I have had the pleasure of attending a few sporting events in whcih Andrews was working. Anytime, Andrews came into my vacinity, I would whip it out and start 'bait'n. Hell, I would guess 90% of the guys in the crowd in my section were doing the same thing (the rest were either gay or had erectile dysfunction).

Andrews, for her part, seemed to enjoy looking into the crowd and see a sea of wankers.
