Red Sox acquired INF/OF Jemile Weeks and INF Ivan De Jesus Jr. from Baltimore for INF/OF Kelly Johnson and 3B Michael Almanzar.

Almanzar returns to the team that took him in the Rule 5 draft last winter but couldn't keep him on the active roster once he returned from the DL.

DeJesus returns to the team that acquired him in the Punto trade -- and later dealt him away to PIT in the Hanrahan trade.

No effing idea why the Sox would need Weeks or DeJesus over the next month -- or in 2015.

I know Baltimore had been looking for a lefthanded-hitting infielder. Trying to process what this does for the Red Sox beyond deck chair shuffling

Worried about Pedey? I don't see how he plays otherwise, unless he's learned another position other than 2nd.

EDIT: I guess so, just saw Lauber's tweet.

Both Weeks & De Jesus are non-roster players, as was Almanzar. So dumping Kelly Johnson opens a vacancy on the Sox 40-man.  EDIT - Never mind, Weeks will be joining the Sox in Johnson's stead.

Also...

Almanzar came out of the [Portland] game tonight and it never crossed my mind he was traded, but he was.

Weeks is primarily a second baseman, but has played multiple positions. Trade was in the works before Pedroia concussion

first Yankees took on Stephen Drew's money, and now we flip Kelly Johnson for something of value (at least more valuable than KJ on this team)

The PawSox already have a glut of middle infielders: Ryan Roberts, Mike McCoy, Justin Henry & Derrik Gibson. Not to mention Carlos Rivera now with Boston. So I'm really confused about what he brings to the table. Seems completely redundant.

Weeks coming to big leagues, DeJesus heading to Pawtucket.

Red Sox save $400+k in the trade and don't give up anything of value.  Both Johnson and Almanzar are free agents.  Weeks is arb eligible but likely doesn't have a future with BOS beyond this year.

I'm reaching to try and find a use for Weeks. DeJesus is minor league depth, which is never bad to have. Weeks may just be around to give them another body for September in case they want to give people days off. Obviously with Pedroia having a concussion, he'll get some starts over the next week at least. Hopefully not more than that, but it's possible the Sox will shut Pedey down for the year and just let him heal up for the spring.

If they want to get Mookie as much exposure to center as possible, then having Weeks will be handy should Pedroia be shut down. Even if Pedey had been healthy, they probably didn't want to push him down the stretch, considering he's been banged up for most of the year. This could be an indication that they are in full on evaluation/prep for 2015 mode. Get the kids as much playing time as possible, rest the vets with lingering injury issues, and call it a season.

Losing Dusty for a week or more could really give us a chance to move higher in the draft rankings, correct? We're 5th now? If we're gonna suck hard, go all the way.

Obviously, Baltimore had the need that this trade addressed. I think a part of the rationale behind the trade is a building of rapport between gms. Fits a need for BAL, doesn't hurt the sox in any meaningful way. Plus, KJ has now completed the ALE circuit.

DeJesus must be an absolute butcher in the field to have never gotten a chance to stick as a utility guy with those MLE on offense.

He's had consistently high OBPs (over .100 higher than his BA) at every minor league level, except for AA - and that one is a small sample size relative to all his other levels. As noted above, he was good as a 24 yr. old in OAK (and you'd think that would project well), but he was bad the next year,  and it looks like he has been given the AAAA purgatory label for the last two.

I think he's an interesting player....no idea about his defense. I don't know that much about the other guys in the deal, but Weeks is a heluva lot more interesting than Kelly Johnson, anyway.

For a second baseman he was even good. He hit pretty consistently from June through Sept./Oct., with OPSs of .818, .683, .751 and .813. In 2012 it looks like BABIP deserted him right from the get-go and he hit poorly all year. Cases like this make me worry about the new Red Sox kids and which of them this may happen to (or already has).

I've never understood -- and I don't think it's ever been clearly stated -- what it was that led the A's to decide he was AAAA so quickly after his solid 2011.  Of course, the O's apparently came to the same conclusion after trading Jim Johnson for him.

They gave him most of 2012 as he had 511 PAs in that year and was .221/.305/.304. And, he was a minus fielder. So, they went with Sogard and Callaspo in 2013. A's 2B was as bad in those years as the Red Sox was good.
