EEI is reporting the Colts are sending the Patriots Allen and a 6th, getting back a 4th from the Patriots............

This is a great move. I have no idea how nobody wanted to beat that offer, but I said the same of Bennett last year. Belichick is a ninja.

I'm hearing that it's the Pats who are sending a 4th to the Colts for Allen and a 6th.
In terms of relative pick value, that's essentially Allen for a mid 6th round pick. That's a great trade for the Pats.

I dont think it takes the Pats completely out of the draft market for TE's. Would be a little surprised if they use a 1st round pick there, but Matt Lengel's status isnt going to keep them from adding a developmental guy they like.

Dwayne Allen must be ecstatic that people are actually going to draft him in fantasy football now.

When thinking about the draft picks, it's also important to note I think that the Patriots by not needing to re-sign Bennett now get a compensatory pick next year. Likely a third rounder if Bennett gets his $9m, and in no case likely to be worse than the 4th rounder they just traded away.

Also, because they acquired him by trade, they do not have to give back one of next year's compensatory picks as they perhaps would have had to if they had gone to FA market to sign a TE.

Agreed. My sense is the Patriots like to cover their bases in free agency so that they go into the draft without having pressing needs. This best allows them to draft who falls to them regardless of position.

Hard not to like this move. They have cap space, and he only costs $5m this year. He has good skills, so if he's the second tight end, he plays a good complimentary role to Gronk. He's a vet, so if you need him to move up to be your TE1 you have some confidence he can contribute. If you want to move on next year, there is no cap consequence to doing so. If he succeeds, you have him under control for decent money.

And the pick they'll get back for Bennett is likely to be higher than the pick it sounds like they are giving the Colts. Hard to find a piece of the puzzle that fits better.

They tendered Lengel, so that's another $1.4m or so already committed to the tight end position, I think. My guess is they are done with TE.
IIRC, that tender isn't guaranteed (they tendered and rescinded on Brian Hoyer a few years ago). So they still have flexibility to draft a guy if they like one.

Mike Lombardi talked on a Podcast recently about not getting mentally trapped into a false duality. This is a great example of how the Patriots don't. It's not just Bennett or no Bennett - it's Bennett or no Bennett or Allen or a draft guy or a FA ...

If the Pats trade back into the 4th round, they will now pick the level of the pick they traded for so long as it's lower than Seattle's pick that is currently forfeited as it's the highest pick they own in the 4th.

So we can trade with any of these teams for these picks
25 (131). Forfeited pick
26 (132). Kansas City Chiefs
27 (133). Dallas Cowboys
28 (134). Green Bay Packers
29 (135). Pittsburgh Steelers
30 (136). Atlanta Falcons
31 (137). Just traded to Colts
32 (138). Cincinnati Bengals (Compensatory Selection)
33 (139). Philadelphia Eagles from Cleveland Browns (Compensatory Selection)
34 (140). New York Giants
35 (141). Los Angeles Rams (Compensatory Selection)
36 (142). Cleveland Browns (Compensatory Selection)
37 (143). San Francisco 49ers (Compensatory Selection)
38 (144). Indianapolis Colts (Compensatory Selection)

Any other trade nets us Seattle's pick back and the loss of the newly acquired 4th round pick.

I really wanted Doyle, was hoping the Colts would let him test FA. He (and Bennett) are both better than Allen IMHO, but I'm good with the deal, at least for the first 2 years.

And I'm the confident BB and Co. will use the 6th rd. pick wisely. :)

And in case you forgot... what is that random non compensatory pick by the NY Giants at 140? That is their punishment for walkie talk gate. Didn't lose their fourth pick, didn't even get forced to pick dead last, just moved down a bunch of slots...

Lol

Basically the Pats traded Bennett and a 4th for Allen plus a 6th plus a 3rd or 4th next year plus $3-5m in cap space. And Allen is 27 vs Bennett 30. But they win because of Spygate and Deflategate.

So bye bye to Marty, one of the "no White House Six", along with Chris Long (already gone), LGBT (probably gone) and Alan Branch and Hightower (? on both), leaving just McCourty.

Coincidence?

Probably.

Random off topic question: do new guys get to go to the ring ceremony (but obviously not collect a ring)?

Love this deal.

I'll always have great memories of Marty though. He and Chris Long both go into the short term Patriot Hall of Fame for me, along with Bryan Cox, Ted Washington, Brandon Browner, etc.

Completely agree re. Marty -- he was fun to root for for a lot of reasons. This interview pretty much summed up why:

From a connected source on Dwayne Allen: Devastating blocker, ability to body guys up and be an elite red-zone threat in pass game. (cont)
Albert Breer‏Verified account @AlbertBreer 58m58 minutes ago
Also, able to move all over the formation, play fullback, in the slot, etc. Issues: Health and consistency. Sometimes lacks focus.

From what I can gather, thought for Pats is their environment should help get Allen more mentally locked in. Health obviously a wild card.

Agree - Mahh-tee will be missed. A fun athlete to follow. I like your concept of the "short term" Patriot HOF. Allow me to nominate: Revis, Brian Waters, Mark Anderson, and Albert Haynesworth (kidding..)
