With the #1 pick, don't we have a better chance to trade it and a player/players for Jimmy Butler? Isn't that the best usage of the pick for us now? I'm thinking make that trade for Butler and sign Hayward and hope that Zizac and the Dancing Bear are ready to contribute next year off the bench and in my mind, that's a legit title contender
No. Fultz is younger and cheaper than Butler and will be under contract longer. Also, Fultz fits what this team needs: size and length at guard while providing big-time scoring at all 3 levels.

Can you even try for Hayward in terms of cap if you trade for Jimmy? I'd much rather get Hayward or another FA and keep the young talent at no cost other than $.

Butler is going to cost next year's pick too.

The one (good) problem the Celtics have now after getting No. 1 pick tonight: Salary cap room gets a lot tighter this offseason for max FA.

Brian Robb‏Verified account @CelticsHub 1m1 minute ago
No. 1 pick will earn $7.0 million in rookie year, so the math makes it hard for C's to keep all signed rotation players AND sign a max FA.

Ryan Bernardoni‏ @dangercart 15s15 seconds ago
With #1 pick and a $101M cap, the C's would almost certainly have to let go of Olynyk, Zeller, and one of Bradley or Smart to sign Hayward.

Sign Hayward and trade AB for a vet big to break in Zizic/Yabu.
This seems like the best plan. Fultz is long enough to play the two and he still hasn't turned 19 yet.

I feel relieved about not having to talk myself into De'Aaron Fox or Lauri Markkanen at 4, though I think both will be good NBA players.

Probably not a surprise but fans of other teams are complaining that the lottery was fixed to get the Celtics and Lakers the first two picks.

I like Smart and AB a lot, but I don't see this as a big problem.
This. AB has done good things for his trade value so far in the postseason, and he's a good fit on any team where the PG isn't lead ball handler. I'd be totally fine if Danny essentially rolled him over for future draft assets (in the Hayward scenario).

Somewhere
If Hayward is really on the table -- I don't think he leaves Utah -- then whomever the Celtics move (Bradley, Smart, etc.) will probably not go for talent. The Celtics would need cap space, and a talent-for-talent trade does not clear it.

The back of your computer
Danny's options, on initial reflection:

Pick Fultz
Trade #1 to CHI for Butler (18.7mm salary for 17-18, contract through 18-19 with a player option for 19-20)
Trade #1 to IND for George (19.5mm salary for 17-18, with a player option for 18-19)
Trade #1 to PHI for #3 and Saric (2.4mm salary for 17-18, with control through 19-20) (BOS then picks Jackson or Tatum)
Trade players and one or both 2018 first round picks (but not this year's #1) for Butler, George or other players

17-18 guaranteed contracts (61.8mm total):

27.7 Horford
8.8 Bradley
6.8 Crowder
6.3 Thomas
5.0 Brown
4.5 Smart
2.0 Rozier
0.7 Jackson (guaranteed portion of contract only)

Cap holds (37.1mm total):

15.6 Johnson
9.5 Jerebko
7.7 Olynyk
2.8 Young
1.5 Green

Assumes Zeller & Mickey options are declined and DJax is waived.

Salary cap is 103mm. Luxury tax is 123mm. If the rights to all free agents but Olynyk are immediately renounced on July 1, the Celtics would have 33.5mm of room under the cap with 7 players under contract, less cap holds of approx 7.0mm for the #1 pick (note 17-18 slots have not been announced), 2.25mm for Yabusele, 1.65mm for Zizic and approx 0.8mm to fill out the 12-man roster, based on minimum salary requirements.

That would leave approx. 21.8mm to sign a free agent (Hayward, I presume) or trade for Butler/George. Renouncing Olynyk would get them to 29.5mm, slightly under max room (30.6mm). Actually signing the #1 pick, Yabusele and/or Zizic frees up more room because the cap holds are based on 120% of slot.

Obviously, they could trade one of the 7 players under contract or get Yabusele to agree to stay overseas for another year to free up more room.

I think they'd have a choice---trade someone like Bradley for a low-salary big, or salary dump/trade for a low pick.

I would be extremely surprised if they kept AB over Smart. I don't think the basketball call is really that close (Smart is better at everything except shooting, which matters but is not everything) and Smart is cheaper, younger, and has an additional year of control plus much more upside.

I do think Crowder is another trade candidate; he'd be a terrific stretch 4 with Hayward, but there are tough choices to make salary work.

Sadly, I agree with Dev that Hayward probably isn't actually coming here anyway

Hey Durant, Want to re-think that decision?
Given the score in Oakland, I am reasonably certain that Durant isn't rethinking anything. He is 28 and needs to win ASAP. Golden State gave him the absolute best chance to do so.

Even with Hayward and Fultz plus most of this roster, this C's sqaud likely won't be true contender for another two to three years. Which is perfect because Curry and Durant will be into their 30s and LeBron will maybe, possibly decline a little bit due to age.

I like Avery more than Smart, but even I think Smart is much more likely to stay. He gives you more flexibility and is less replaceable. And he's less likely to pout coming off the bench.

If you get rid of Crowder (and Green and DJax and Zeller) , can you sign Heyward and keep everyone else in the rotation, and draft at #1, or no?

This isn't like the NFL where you can restructure contracts, correct?

That's not the right choice. They can trade Bradley for picks or they can renounce Olynyk and trade Rozier or Smart. Just trading Bradley probably leaves them a tiny bit short of the max. I'd assume they package Jackson with Bradley to unload the minor extra guarantee.

Crowder doesn't make enough money to creat the cap space they need. Trading Crowder would leave them still needing to renounce Olynyk or trade Smart. Bradley is the obvious choice for clearing cap space because he makes the most money next year (at least for cap purposes in July). I've got them about $1 million short of signing Hayward to a full max if they trade Bradley and Jackson (packaged with Bradley) with no salary coming back, keep everyone else, and sign last year's picks. It's possible that is close enough if he wants to come here. If not, unloading Rozier is probably just barely enough, or at the least, close enough to not matter.

To simplify for the sake of future discussion, the team needs to clear about $10-11 million in cap space to sign Hayward to a max contract. I haven't done a precise calculation yet. If you aren't at that level, your idea doesn't work.

Any chance Heyward would want to play for his old coach + something he likes about Boston = willingness to sign for less than the max?

After teams work out Ball, I don't think it's going to go Fultz - Ball.
I don't know how much truth there is to the rumors that Magic is infatuated with him, but it seems like a lot of plugged in guys have been saying that Lonzo to the Lakers would be fait accompli if they ended up at #2, and now "multiple teams are evaluating trade packages for D'Angelo Russell according to league sources" according to Jake Fischer at SI.

No chance that Hayward will take less than max money. His love of Brad may be worth something but not millions of dollars.

Signing for the max in Boston is already less than he could get in Utah because of the Bird rule so it is doubtful he would be interested in taking even less than that.

The All NBA teams that come out this week will make a big difference on if he stays or leaves. He'll get a lot more money from Utah if he makes 3rd team.

Wouldn't Utah give him the max, all-NBA teams notwithstanding? Why would the Jazz care whether he gets 3rd team honours?

Have I missed something about Hayward expressing interest in Boston, or is all this speculation based on the fact that he played for Stevens for 70 games, 7 years ago? I'd love to have him, but is there reason to think he won't just re-sign with Utah?

That maybe true but I would love to see how Ball runs the PnR in a private work-out. Seems like defenders don't have to worry about Ball going to the right which makes ita lot easier to defend him. Also would be interested in seeing Ball trying to play NBA defense as he seems to lack the feet to guard NBA players.

But what do I know?

Its speculation given the relationship. Its clearly out there enough to get Garden fans to piss off Jae Crowder.

If he makes it, he'll qualify for the Designated Player Exemption, and can be paid 35% (as opposed to "just" 30%) of the team's cap.

He gets the max no matter what, but if he makes all-NBA he is eligible for a designated player contract that allows Utah to pay him substantially more, something like 5 years, $200mn, I believe.

My optimism is partially based on that, and partially based on their reported near success in landing KD. If Hayward moves, GSW won't be out there this time and it seems like Danny and Brad are capable of making quite the pitch. Also, I think our team + Hayward + #1 is much more likely to give a path to a championship than a Utah team sticking with the status quo. But, money and loyalty (can't blame him for either at all).
