#RedSox announce passing of Doug Griffin, who was 69. “Dude” was an excellent 2B, Gold Glove winner in 1972.

***

One of my strongest memories of Doug Griffin was his being beaned by Nolan Ryan.

wiki: On April 30, 1974, Griffin was beaned by a Nolan Ryan fastball knocking him unconscious. The beaning left him with a concussion and temporary hearing loss, and likely caused the premature end to Griffin's career. On August 30, 1975 Griffin was beaned again, this time by Oakland's Dick Bosman.

Acquired by Sox for Tony C.

And after *his* replacement, Denny Doyle, petrified, the Sox traded for another CAL 2B -- Remy.

R.I.P. "The Dude". I remember when he was the fastest guy on the Red Sox, which definitely wasn't saying much.

I was in Fenway when Ryan drilled Doug Griffin. Very scary. I was never a Ryan fan because of his penchant for going above the shoulders, as Ellis Burks would be happy to tell you. Wish I could dig up Willie Wilson's great line about Ryan getting away with so much crap.

R.I.P., DG.

Sad news. Doug was the first Sox batter at my first Fenway game in 1971. He faced Dick Drago of the Royals and got 2 hits that night.

Castig just said he was a fishing buddy of Yaz.
