An early Christmas present!

@BenVolin: CBS announces that Dan Dierdorf is retiring after this season. Has been in the NFL for 43 straight years -- 13 as player, 30 as broadcaster

He's still going to state the obvious. It's just that we're not going to be able to hear it.

But I don't think Fouts or Wilcots are that much better. Hopefully Gannon or Tasker (not experienced enough yet so not gonna happen) fill the #2 slot next year.

This makes me happy. Probably my least favorite NFL commentator.

Knowing CBS, I shudder to think who'll be the replacement.

Yeah this.  Maybe they'll give it to Siragusa and let him sit indoors for a change.  His brilliant insight is sometimes lost in the crowd noise.

I was going to post that he should spend more time at his steakhouse in St. Louis (Westport) because I had a shitty meal there last February, but I learned it closed in April.  So, not sure what he will do.

That depends. Not on your TV anyway. What state does he live in, and are you in the same time zone?

Losing McCarver and Dierdorf in the same year is like losing Hitler and Mussolini in 1945.

Guys, that's just a great job of continuing to do what you were trained to do. You know, after seeing that replay, maybe it is time get while the getting is good after all. Great job guys.

You must be from Waltham. Kids who grow up in Waltham always shake Japan from their dreams and forget about the rest of the Axis.

Meh, a noble effort, but you could have done better.

I'm confused.  I thought Dierdorf and McCarver were the same person.  And since McCarver had already announced his retirement, I thought this was well known.  Nothing to see here.

Jesus. I don't know when I last heard him call a game - it might be ten or fifteen years - and I'd forgotten about it until I saw this picture, but good God I think Jerry Glanville is the worst commentator I've ever heard.

Magic Johnson has to be in that discussion.

When Cris Collinsworth is by far the best color guy in the business, you know there's trouble.

1. Collinsworth
2. Aikman
3. Johnston
4. Mayock
5. Billick

I think of the options right now Mayock is the best.  Aikman isn't bad except when his concussion symptoms act up.  Collinsworth isn't bad either.

Bingo..Mayock breaks it down more fluidly than the others. He does his homework and isn't caught off guard (much) on controversial or special plays. I don't mind Collinsworth or Billick either, both are good (even with their Patriot bias)

I have and always will appreciate the game from the lineman's perspective. I will miss Mr. Dierdorf, because he called the game as he seen the game, and obvious or not, he did see the game.

The game he was broadcasting?

He did Ivy League games on YES for a while. IIRC, he did a Yale/Columbia game that I watched 2 or 3 years ago. You think he screwed up NFL games? It was a real train wreck to watch.

Dierdorf seems a lot like McCarver - interesting and insightful at first, but they both somehow turned into total bores, seemingly overnight.

I will say this, having not seen either actually play, everything I've ever read places Dierdorf as a worthy Hall of Fame player and McCarver as a good but never great regular.

Thus, Dierdorf > McCarver because they were both terrible TV analysts.

I always liked Dierdorf because he was one of the big voices of sports from my childhood, since he was on the MNF crew and the 49ers were always on MNF. Two things I liked about him: for a guy who had been in pro football for over 40 years, he was still excited to be at the game, and he always seemed willing to criticize bad play or bad officiating. He was not someone who ran away from calling somebody out.

I think I hate Old Dan more than mccarver. It was always funny when he would get passed over on the hall of fame and get pissy about it. Chris Collinsworth is my equivalent of Joe Buck. Intelligent about the game but annoying pricks. Dan and Mccarver just out in their own rambling worlds.

I can't get past all of Mayock's cliches. He literally can't say anything without using one. Or, maybe I'm an example of what Sox and Rocks said.

Actually, Collinsworth sees and points out more details after plays that I certainly didn't see or couldn't have because of non-infinite camera coverage for us TV spectators. He's the best right now IMO. I don't thing Dierdorf is that bad though. Maybe his head construction made him less susceptible to blows to the head than a lot of other long time players.

This. And Bert Blyleven was even better...every time he'd get passed over he'd make the rounds and bitch about it. I always felt like Blyleven probably should have gotten in, but hearing him whine about it made him getting passed over kind of amusing.
