Follow-up from Mastrodonato says that it came after Price threw a simulated game the other day, completely out of nowhere. Elbow/forearm pain leads to MRI, leads to Dr Andrews? That's not good at all.

Explanation for his drop-off in velocity last year? It would make a lot more sense if he had been battling an injury.

Well this is less than ideal.

Price was much better in the second half last year but as Clemens pointed out in the only interesting thing he's ever said, Price's mechanics were kind of all over the place last season. Elbow impingement/soreness might have been the result, or the root cause. In any case this isn't looking promising.

I'd think Kendrick would get the call first over Owens or Johnson if needed. Hector Velzaquez probably would too. Roenis is a candidate as well.

Price threw 230 innings last year. That's going to be a huge gap to cover if indeed he's out for a while. Sale will cover a bunch of that, but that's going to put a lot of pressure on Pomeranz, ERod and Wright as well.

Dammit. Dammit dammit dammit.

I wonder if something popped. Like, was there a moment where he felt something during the simulated game? This is sort of out of left field if it was something he battled all last season. Dammit.

Wow. This is a massive blow before the season starts. Losing Price, losing Ortiz, that's tough production for any team to overcome. Yikes. :(

This sucks but come on guys. We are looking at a rotation of Procello, Sale, Pomeranz, Wright and Erod. That is not a bad way to start the season. Most teams after losing their ace (if that is indeed what is going to happen) would be in a lot worse shape then the Sox.

From Pete Abraham's Facebook page

FORT MYERS, Fla. — There’s trouble in Red Sox camp. Lefthander David Price was scratched from his next start because of unusual soreness in his forearm and elbow and may have a serious injury.

Price is waiting for results of an MRI taken on Wednesday. But he has already requested meetings with prominent orthopedic surgeons James Andrews and Neal ElAttrache to get a second opinion. Those consultations are expected to take place later this week at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

“He’s gone through some soreness in the forearm/elbow area in previous spring trainings. But this one’s got a little bit more intensity to it,” manager John Farrell said on Thursday.

Price threw 38 pitches in a two-inning simulated game on Tuesday and felt fine, Farrell said. He first felt discomfort on Wednesday morning.

“He feels improved today over yesterday, so that’s an encouraging sign,” Farrell said. “But, still, we have to take every step along the way to get out arms around this in its entirety.”

I understand this is a total hindsight bitch, but trading Buchholz to save money sucked. Wright, Pomeranz, and Rodriguez all had injury issues. And now we just lost the one guy who wasn't an injury risk.

This isn't good.

You do realize that if they didn't trade Buchholz they wouldn't have Chris Sale on this team, correct? They didn't save the $12.5 million. They turned it from Clay Buchholz to Chris Sale.

I've been worried about this since all of those end of season stories about Price having trouble commanding his fastball away from the heart of the plate.

Well, I hope it's nothing.

Maybe this should teach you (and most of us) that all pitchers are injury risks.

Exactly. This rotation was so over the top good, that it's disappointing, but still going in as a big improvement over last year.

The second guessing is kind of silly given they were still going into the season with 6 excellent starters even after Buchholz was moved. He'd still be their long man.

It would be more surprising if he did not hit a significant injury. The concern was when and what would he be like after. Happening at this point is going to confirm a lot of the doom talk about big/long deals and paying for past performance and, in this case, mileage.

Here's hoping he dodges a bullet and proves to be an exception or at the very least returns to form when he does return.

I think Price having all the security in the world via that contract makes immediate TJ less likely. If there's any prayer injections or whatever can get him back on field sometime this year i bet he jumps at it.

Re Buch
Listening to DD's presser he made it clear potential MLB FA's are a little more confident in the Wright Pom Eduardo trifecta than the fan base and weren't willing to sign without a clear path to starting. If Price is out with TJ or Wright and Pom can't get in healthy shape before season I'd guess they poke around at Lewis or Fister for less than Buch's 13 mill.

No spinning it sucks and puts more pressure up and down the roster but not having Sale would make things look a lot more iffy to put it obviously.

Ace seems a bit strong - despite his compensation package. Last year's Price (if he was healthy) on this year's team could be their #3.

Many of you probably have seen the movie "Fastball" (Related link above - I hope.) I think the Price segment, entitled "I love my fastball", is very revealing. The bottom line is that the pitch he loves and needs the most, he no longer has. If healing his arm can remedy that, there may be a silver lining here.
