Not here
How about to help his teammates?
The ones that collectively bargained with him for that right to a day in court?

I'm pretty sure they're on his side.

There was no reason not to drop the appeal on a day he was already sitting.  Truly mind boggling.

Has he even sat out once since the suspension was announced? Since the suspension was announced, the team has been playing with a short bench due to carrying thirteen pitchers or because Hanley or Napoli or someone else has been unavailable. When exactly should he have dropped the appeal for the sake of better timing?

Okay, but still while the team was carrying 13 pitchers. If Ortiz chooses that game to serve his suspension, the bench that day is Hanigan and Nava. Can't see how that helps his team.

Couldn't they have given Shaw his one day trip up then?

They don't get to call up an Ortiz replacement for the game. They have to play with 24 on the roster. Shaw is coming up in Mujica's spot, and will probably be sent down for a reliever after the game.

They didn't have that luxury on the 26th.

Craig Breslow or Allen Craig.  It's time to admit that Allen Craig is done.
Cutting Craig with a DFA would be the record amount for the Sox having to "eat" salary, I believe.  Craig is owed the balance of his $5.5 mil salary for this year, $9 million for 2016, $10 million for 2017 and an added $1 million to by out his option for 2018.  Have the Sox ever eaten $25 million?  I know they sent $11 million to the Dodgers to cover part of Crawford's contract.  I also know they sent cash along with Julio Lugo to the Cardinals, but I think it was under $10 mil.

Craig gets sent to AAA, somehow, long before the Sox eat his salary.
