This is the first and likely last time I'll post in a hockey forum because I'm just not a hockey guy. I did have a curiosity about the game for a few years in the '70's and remember the WHA. If they are able to use the Toyota Center I say bring on the Houston Aeros.

I wonder who owns the rights to the team name at this point.

I'd love it if the Coyotes became the Aeros. But I'm sure they'd end up with some focus grouped bullshit like the Commanders. Ugh.

The last owner listed that I could find is Minnesota Sports and Entertainment.
I presume they owned the club toward the end when it was the AHL farm team of the Wild. I'm assuming it was renamed when they moved it to Iowa or Illinois or wherever it was it ended up.

If there were going to be rights issues, I'd be more worried about any trademarks still held by the previous owners (maybe the McNair family?).

Katie Strang has another article on the Athletic about the situation, this time just giving a bit of an overview of the day-to-day routines the players will go through with their move across the metro area (the Ice Den in Scottsdale for practices, facilities incomplete, and ASU’s arena, scheduled to be finished for the Sun Devils in October, but December for the Coyotes), and saw this nugget I hadn’t heard before:

The Coyotes were also put on a $50,000 per month payment plan in October to settle outstanding accounts with the City of Tucson for back rent on the Tucson Convention Center, where their AHL team plays, according to public records. When the payment plan was initiated, the back rent owed by the Roadrunners for the 2020-21 season totaled $256,449.48 (the additional balance for the current fiscal year totaled $81,578.52). As of last week, the overall debt has been whittled down to $145,485, a city official confirmed.
