I can't wait until a free throw contest wins game 7 of the NBA Finals
I've never understood why they don't have the penalties in a shootout taken from a few yards further out. That way, it's not just a guessing game and the keeper actually has a chance of saving it if he reacts perfectly upon contact.

I still like the idea of taking away a player per team every 15 minutes

Losing in penalties is the worst possible outcome. Better to be Mexico or the US and know you just sucked, then to lose that way.

Of course, the guys who've been at it for 120 minutes can't keep playing, but each side has a full team worth of substitutes that never play. I'd rather see a half with the second framers than penalties. Not that that's an exciting option.

I figured the ref would just keep red carding guys out to implement his own version of breaking ties - 10-10 then 9-9 then 8-8 and so on until someone scores.
