Other Coaching Vacancies

Hawaii

The Warriors could do a lot worse than retaining Benjy Taylor after the way he pulled that team out of the dumpster fire. And it wasn't just replacing Gib Arnold on short notice after he was canned in late October -- the Hawaii athletic department is hemorrhaging cash, and the university got rid of AD Ben Jay in December (officially, he "resigned").

From KHON-2:

UH did not receive an invite from the 32 team NIT, so the question now becomes, what happens with interim Head Coach Benjy Taylor?

It’s believed that the permanent job will be posted as early as this upcoming week, and Taylor says he will apply.

“I think we’ve done more than enough, I think these players have done more than enough. No one promised me anything, all they did is promise me the opportunity to coach these guys this year, and I did that to the best of my ability, and that’s all I’m thankful for, I’m grateful for it. All we had control of was right now, we did the best we could with that, let’s see what happens from here” said, Taylor.

Theoretically, Taylor could be offered a contract before the job is officially posted, however there has been no indication from UH administrators on if that would or could happen.

@CDiSano44: Hearing that former Oregon State HC Craig Robinson is the leader for the Holy Cross job.
Update on Holy Cross:

Sent to ESPN: Sources -- Bill Carmody to be named next head coach at Holy Cross at a news conference Thursday.

The former Princeton and Northwestern coach took almost 2 years off from coaching until in January he took an "advisory" position with Fairfield where he worked for former player Sydney Johnson.

Man, talk about a program ripe for a hero. Three decades of abject misery since Ray Sr. left, with only brief glimmers of hope.

That program has crapped out so bad, it's almost like why would anyone want it?

Texas better get its shit together on the search for Rick Barnes' replacement or all the good ones will be unavailable.
If Bama can back the truck up for Marshall, why doesn't Austin?

I mean, if he doesn't want to go home (South Carolina, Georgia, or Clemson? C of C seems a step down), Austin seems like the most sense. Not too far from where he is now, decent fit socially, plus the #1 thing for Longhorn bball fans I would think, proven ability to beat Kansas.

Arizona State reportedly has told Duke assistant and former Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel the job is his if he wants it.  Duke's 1st call to replace him would be Jay Williams, who will turn it down (again!), and then they move down the list from there.  Tyler Thornton, a graduate assistant for Wojo at Marquette, would probably be the next in line.

Josh Pastner is another ASU candidate.  If he goes, Gregg Marshall could end up at Memphis.  And Texas WILL make a big offer to Marshall as well, assuming they fire Barnes.  Sounds like Marshall will listen to Alabama but that's about it, not in a rush to take that gig.

Tennessee is firing Donnie Tyndall due to the severity of the NCAA penalties against him from his Southern Miss days. The word was that UT loved him and would keep him. But, the penalties must be really bad that they simply can't keep him.

GMU apparently has 4 targets---Steve Prohm (who was born in area) from Murray St. and Levelle Moton from NC-Central are 2 who's names have surfaced. Frankly, without the area ties, I think Prohm has a better position now, but the A-10 is a step up the ladder. It might depend on if his star PG Cameron Payne decides to go pro.

Both Murray St. and NC-Central went undefeated in conference play this year before falling in their tourneys.

Prohm is staying at Murray State.  He signed a contract extension today.  Albany's Will Brown interviewed but I have it on good authority that he is staying put.

My darkhorse: Mark Jackson.

I wonder if we see Chris Mullin's name mentioned.

Cluess signed an extension yesterday or the day before at Iona. I'm sure St. John's would love Hurley, but I'm not sure the interest would be mutual.

Some fancy town in CT
On the plus side, Mullin and Jackson are both local so they may have more success in snagging the NYC kids who go to Nova or Pitt at least.

I just hope the administration doesn’t equate the “glory days” with recruiting success since the kids they are chasing were born a decade after that era ended.

Hearing that St. John's was sick of Lavin's BS and they lowballed him to signal that he wasn't coming back.

According to a source, St. John's AD Monasch recommended an extension for Lavin. Overruled by president
Fran Fraschilla said on Twitter that he knew Lavin was out right when he heard they were talking extension.  What you heard is probably what Fraschilla went through when he exited Queens.

Lavin is a classic great recruiter/shitty coach combo. The Johnnies massively underachieved during his tenure considering the talent he was able to bring in.

What talent was that? The only NBA prospects he brought in over 5 years was Harkless and Obekpa. He drafted some other nice players but I always felt the lack of impact guys is where Lavin and St Johns have fallen short.

Did I say NBA players? The Harrison/ Pointer/ Greene/ Harkless group was ranked in the top 5 nationally as a recruiting class. You mentioned Obekpa, but Rysheed Jordan was also a very highly ranked recruit. He also had Brandon Sampson coming in next year (not likely to happen now).

On the surface, thats plenty of talent and certainly enough to win more than he did.

Why didn't St. John's win more? Why didn't those talented players develop more? Coaching.

Edit: Whoops, thought this was URI thread.

Chris Mullin has been offered the St. John's job and has accepted it per Rothstein and Goodman.

Hope he's the right hire. Never easy to fire a legend ... if it has to happen, it's typically 2-3 years too late. High risk/reward addition?

Metta World Peace wants the St Johns coaching job. So much so that he's calling into radio shows to state his case. Without boring you with the entire transcript this part was comedy gold!

Radio Host: So tell me, what did you do when you found out the St. John's job was available?

MWP: Once I found out I called Coach Lavin to congratulate him on representing the university over the past few years......

That's right.....Big Ron called a guy who just lost his $2m per job and congratulated him!!!
