Sad for Atleti. Two minutes from an incredible double is nothing to be ashamed of. They spent so much energy defending.

That looked like a goal from my daughter's rec league. He dribbled 30 feet down the center and shot.

You're all class, Chrissy.

Edit:  Came back to revisit in light of some of the discussion about gender issues on the board.  I'll leave it instead of deleting it, along with this apology.

Hey, the more you're forgetting about Qatar with their terrorist ties and countless human right violations the better. Now remember, fly Qatar ;)

Every replay I see of Bale's header, it gets closer to the post. He barely tucked it in the top right corner.

Can we all take moment to recognize how terrible Gus Johnson is for soccer? His breathless orgasmic calls on Ramos and Bale's goals are hilariously bad.

Over the next couple of months whenever some every-four-years jackwagon is talking about how soccer sucks and it's all diving pussies, I'm going to laugh at him and remember this match. That was fucking ridiculous.

Must have been the most important goal for Ronaldo, as much as he went nuts (again) after scoring his gazillionth goal to make it 4-1 from a PK.

I can´t stand him, like probably everyone. Usually, i think he plays pretty good, but he was nowhere to be seen in the 2nd half and extra time. Nowhere, other than the PK and his partying. At the end of regular time, there was nothing from Atleti and Real was pushing really hard for the equalizer. Had they made it 2-0 earlier, it would have been a different game then at the end, but they were running out of gas (and players).

Nowhere to be seen?  He had a ton of chances in the second half.

It was probably an important goal for him since the game was in Lisbon and gave him 17 for the tourney setting a new record?

Ronaldo had 9 shots, 3 on goal, drew the foul for his goal, and had an assist.  You can hate him, but he was all over the pitch.

After a night's rest, and now that the alcohol was worn off, I've had a chance to think about the match.

Two parts of the match will stick with me:

1. Simeone's decision to play Costa. At some point this year, there was an article about Cholo--or maybe it was in his book--that mentioned Cholo reads a player's horoscope before deciding to sign that player to ensure the player fits the team's philosophy and mentality. In other words, he's superstitious (I suppose like many South Americans). Whether it was superstition (of course a Bulgarian fake doctor with horse placenta is a good idea!) or stubbornness, it is a decision that will haunt him and this game for a long time. Atletico needed an extra set of fresh legs, badly. Cholo's choice greatly hurt the team's chances to win.

2. Bad luck. The team needed Arda Turan, who did not recover from his lingering hip injury, for his ability to create chances and hang onto the ball. Turan was sorely missed. In addition, Cholo had to put in a defensive substitution for Filipe Luis rather than putting someone like Diego Ribas or Cebolla or Mario Suarez to stabilize the midfield. These two injuries, even though the team almost won the game, forced Atletico into a bad position, as evidenced by the thrashing in the second extra time.
