Can't believe how well the Clips played last night. Watched some of the game and they really played hard on both ends of the court to quiet the doubters. Gotta give them credit for beating up on a decent Mavs team.

That makes them 1-1 to start the brutal 10 game stretch I mentioned upthread. Next up, home vs HOU- minus Dwight Howard, which is another winnable game (currently favored by 7 points according to ESPN).

DeAndre was a beast and a quality team coming off 4 straight losses is typically going to come out with a high sense of urgency. Let's keep in mind that this is a Dallas team who lost both Tyson Chandler and Monta Ellis in the games opening minutes.

The Mavs were extremely shorthanded without these two key starters plus had to endure the two-headed "monster" PG tandem of Barea and Felton.....they couldn't get into their offense all night. They had no size in the frontcourt left after trading Wright and losing Tyson.

2017:  better of BRK/BOS
2018:  BOS + BRK
2019:  BOS + MEM

Second Round:

2015:  BOS + PHI + WAS (top 49 protected, currently #48)
2016:  MIN + PHI + CLE + better of MEM/DAL + MIA
2017:  MIN + CLE + LAC + BOS (unless 46-60 and switch 1st round picks w/BRK)
2018:  BOS
2019:  BOS

If you feel that realistic expectations are to be an EC contender no sooner than 2018-19 as I do you have to be impressed with how Ainge has positioned these acquired picks to give the perception of being "lucky" rather than using a calculated approach to project another teams demise.

* Brooklyn - Picks begin in the post JJ/Deron/Pierce/KG/Brook years without the Nets having young up and comers to fill in. Should result in two Top-10 picks (at worst) and moving up into Top-10 in the swap year.

* Dallas - Deep WC with NO and Phoe ready to pass them as Dirk hits his wall could easily turn this into a lottery pick.

* Philly - Both picks figure to be early 30's just outside of first round.

* Memphis - My sleeper pick. The franchise could implode in 4 years without Z-Bo and Gasol anchoring the frontline as a limited budget team. This pick has strong potential for being in the lottery.

Ainge is really positioning us well as a non-destination locale to compete into the next decade.

2015 second round draft pick to Cleveland
Boston's 2015 2nd round pick to Cleveland protected for selections 31-55 (if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Boston's obligation to Cleveland will be extinguished) [Boston-Brooklyn-Cleveland, 7/10/2014]
2016 second round draft pick to Utah
Utah will receive the more favorable of Boston's 2016 2nd round pick and Toronto's 2016 2nd round pick (via Memphis) and Memphis will receive the less favorable of these two picks [Memphis-Toronto, 7/9/2009; Boston-Memphis-Oklahoma City, 1/7/2014; Memphis-Utah, 6/26/2014]; this pick conveyance is the same as the one described in "2016 second round draft pick from Toronto" on Utah Credits

From Springfield to Providence
It'll be curious to me to see how these future draft picks are valued to others this off-season, as Ainge looks to make a move or two in an attempt to make the C's relevant again.

This year, I would imagine that the Celtics will be talking to Sacramento about moving up in the draft, if they're really interested in WC-S.

Ainge would also finally get a shot at his binky, Ben McLemore!

Will be pretty tough to get Sacramento to give up the possible WCS/Cousins tandem.

Appealing on the surface, but that lineup would have no outside threat in the frontcourt (Gay is only nominally a threat from beyond the arc).

BUMPING a really old thread.

We have a pretty good idea that LAC will convey a pick to Toronto this year (The Clips are 9.5 games ahead of Portland who is in the 9th spot in the West) and that Memphis will convey their pick to Portland (they are 7.5 games up on Portland)

Considering that, we have a more solid picture of Celtics future picks as of this moment:

2017: BKN swap 1st, MIN 2nd, LAC 2nd, CLE 2nd (BOS 2nd goes to BKN with the swap)
2018: BKN 1st, BOS 1st (BOS 2nd goes to OKC, protected 31-55, no obligation if protected)
2019: LAC 1st (protected 1-14), MEM 1st (protected 1-8), BOS 1st, DET 2nd (BOS 2nd goes to MEM, protected 31-55, no obligation if protected)
2020: LAC 1st (if not conveyed in 2019, protected 1-14) ,MEM 1st (if not conveyed in 2019, protected 1-6), BOS 1st, MIA 2nd, BOS 2nd
2021: MEM 1st (if not yet conveyed), BOS 1st, BOS 2nd
2022: BOS 1st, BOS 2nd, LAC 2nd (if no first round pick conveyed)

Obviously the Celtics will not make all of these specific picks, there will be more trades, etc.

That's a great lineup of picks. I've been sort of myopic until now, focusing on the Brooklyn pick this year and next, but 2019 doesn't look bad either. I think what's becoming clear about the drafts is there's a significant crap shoot element, and the more picks you have, the better off you are because of a touch of randomness. Ainge resisted the GMs who wanted him to overpay this year, knowing he had so many assets, but it'll be interesting to see his strategy going forward if he doesn't unload a bunch of those. More draft-and-stash guys?
