Damaged goods? Can they make the M's send back Miley?

I'm joking, of course.

Hopefully whatever it is is minor, but I'm not holding my breath.

Carson Smith: 'I'm concerned. It's my career.' Said prelim exam showed nothing alarming. Was not told what test he'd have tonight.

Carson Smith, taken out of game for precautionary reasons after experiencing forearm tightness, to be evaluated tonight in Fort Myers.

Remember his velocity dipped last September even though his numbers were still great.
Wonder if the M's had serious concerns

What happened to the famed Red Sox medical staff? You would think with the velocity drop in September, eyebrows might have been raised. The Red Sox never seem to have any luck trading for relievers. At least we cannot blame this deal on Ben. . So we get a pitcher who is damaged goods. See you in July of 2017 after your TJ surgery.
Not my viewpoint but the viewpoint of a typical Felger Jazz caller.

Well this sucks. Hope it's nothing, but there's probably no chance we're that lucky

What?

So what's your viewpoint?

Carson Smith once killed a bear with his teeth and then wore its hairy bear ballsack as a hat on a date with a Canadian lumbermistress.
Not my viewpoint but the viewpoint of someone who has strange arctic furry fetishes.

Then why fucking bother post it?
We had all sorts of joking about amputation just a few posts above mine. Why did you become the Sheriff of this place? I was trying to lighten the atmosphere. Sorry to upset you. Please accept my apology.

This doesn't even make sense. We had joking so you were trying to lighten the joking atmosphere?

Normally when you make a joke you don't explain it.

Like, that thing with the furry, that was a joke but if I'd said 'This is my actual fantasy' instead of making up a part about how it was just a fantasy of a "friend" it'd wreck the joke.

In all reality, this is a big deal and it's clearly going to completely fuck the Red Sox. You may have been right to lighten the atmosphere but the Sheriff has his rules and those rules are pretty clear - this is a place of business.

For people assuming we're on to Dr. Andrews' operating table, there is no certainty that forearm tightness indicates a ruptured ligament in the elbow. Just today Aaron Loup of the Jays began throwing after feeling forearm tightness and being shut down for two weeks. The MRI showed his elbow was sound and didn't need surgery, or at least that's where things stand now. Smith may not get this lucky but it's not a certainty he's done.

What the heck makes you think anything happened to the medical staff? Do you think it's impossible for the team to have given him a clean bill of health, have been correct, and for him still to have gotten an injury?

Stop trying to blame people for things that happen just because things happen.

I, for one, am simply hoping he didn't get his MRI done by the guy who read Arroyo's.

Of greater imperative, where are the famed SOSH medical experts?? I demand an immediate interweb diagnosis!
I'm not a Dr., but a once played the role of Dr. Rusty Speculum, OB-GYN in a low-budget porn film. In my "professional" opinion, it's premature to speculate as to how f*cked Smith is or isn't. I'll be at the bar should anyone desire any further "insight."

I'm not on the Doomtrain on this one quite yet, but it does suck to be back to wondering if people like Matt Barnes, Brandon Workman, or Pat Light can be counted on.

On another note, the news of Lester having bone chips in his elbow maybe adds a little clarity to the lowball initial offer from Ben / Lucchino & Co.

And if nothing else the Mgmt/Ownership group deserves some credit by not being sore losers to Theo/Cubs and leaking that news to the media last year.

The low ball offer was due to the team really not wanting to commit those kind of dollars and years to a guy who had been somewhat inconsistent over the previous 3 years. The chip (s) are something he has had awhile now, perhaps even when Theo was here, and has not been a problem, and if it starts being a problem it is something that's easily corrected surgically in the offseason, and he would be ready by the next ST. Worst case is you need to do it someday during the season and you miss a few months, but that's not a given. Cubs knew about it before they made the deal official.

Giving credit to someone for not doing something unethical, if not illegal, seems a bit over the top IMO

There are many cases where a pitcher experiences a forearm strain or tightness and does not need TJS. Andrew Miller was out for a month last year and came back fine. Of course, a fair number of pitchers sometimes experience forearm tightness as the first symptom of a UCL problem. His drop in velocity in the 2nd half last year may or may not be another sign. Just have to wait and see what the MRI says.

My guess is he probably starts the year on the 15 day DL but he's fine. I think the stars are aligning for Marmol or Barnes to make the squad.

If you squint enough you can find some optimism here:

“I think everybody here, if they felt something in their forearm, is going to be concerned. Who knows how serious it is. We toyed with some tests in there and . . . there were optimistic results.”
Farrell said Smith had not expressed any prior tightness in the forearm this spring, and the reliever noted that he had never experienced a problem.

“I will say this, someone who took the ball 70 times a year ago, I can’t imagine there’s not some normal wear and tear that a pitcher goes through, but (he has) not stated anything along those lines this spring,” Farrell said.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Righthanded reliever Carson Smith left the Red Sox clubhouse at JetBlue Park on Tuesday morning to get further tests on his forearm.

Smith left Monday’s game against the Cardinals with what was described as cramping.

“Not much of an update. I saw the doctor when I got back [Monday]. It checked out pretty positive,” Smith said. “I’ll be going for a few more tests and we’ll see where it’s at.”

Presumably Smith will get an MRI at some point on Tuesday but he did not know what tests were scheduled. Before Smith spoke to three reporters, a Red Sox official pulled him aside and spoke to him in quiet tones.

“It feels all right. It doesn’t feel too bad,” Smith said. “I’m relieved a little bit and we’ll see where it goes. It’s pretty close to normal. I can’t say it’s normal, but it’s feeling better.”

Smith, 26, was obtained from the Seattle Mariners in December. The Red Sox view him as a key set-up man in their bullpen. Smith appeared in 70 games for Seattle last season, allowing only 49 hits over 70 innings and striking out 92.

If Smith starts the season on the disabled list, righthander Matt Barnes moves into consideration for a spot on the roster. Barnes has thrown 8 1/3 scoreless innings in spring training, allowing five hits and striking out nine with one walk.

For those on Mobile

“@MikeSilvermanBB: Carson Smith MRI results: strain of flexor mass muscle. Will go on DL. Expected to pitch this year, no timetable available.”

Same injury Andrew Miller had and he missed around a month.

So now does the team go with Barnes? Or purchase Marmols contract? Or none of the above?

Bad news, Barnes will need to step up in the interim. Carson's delivery has to impact this problem.

Not to bum anyone out, but Homer Bailey was also diagnosed with this injury when he was initially sidelined in August 2014. He underwent surgery that September to repair the muscle and rehabbed it for a Spring Training 2015 come back but ended up undergoing TJ surgery last May. The Sox and Smith are not out of the woods yet.

Same injury that ended Buchholz's season last year.

Here's a list of other "flexor strains" from 2015.

Jason Vargas, missed ~6 weeks, made 1 start upon return, then underwent TJS.
Matt Cain, missed ~12 weeks
Doug Fister, missed ~3-4 weeks
Joe Nathan, missed ~3-4 weeks, re-injured elbow in AAA, required TJS
Cliff Lee, well, we all know how he has done the last few years.

I would guess Barnes since he is rapidly approaching the point where he's got to put up or GTFO. It would be nice if he could have some solid outings in big league games before going back.

Of course if he has some solid outings he might not be going back.

What's up with Koji? MLB.com is showing he's only had three appearances this season and none since 3/14/. Oh, and he's allowed seven hits. Without Carson Smith, we're gonna need good Koji.

Ras, I read that in the last game that Koji appeared in, he was throwing one pitch exclusively--he was experimenting with a cutter.
