I actually don't hate Liles, he's a good puck mover. For 1 year at that money, that's fine. Way better than overpaying Kris Russell.

The signing is fine if they didn't already have too many mediocre guys on the blueline. The roster spot is more valuable. If this prevents them from bringing in another defenseman, then this will suck.

You are right that this shouldn't prevent Sweeney from getting a top-4 defenseman. In fact, coupled with the Backes signing, they could probably use a subsidized Krejci to do just that.
