Brady 6 on NFLN right now.

Pennington gets a lot of shit, but after his shoulder surgeries he had no arm and still played pretty damn well.

Edit: Drew Henson made a bad choice. Worse than choosing milk.

Second Edit: Brady's dad is Claude Julien without the Canadian accent.

Yeah, Pennington didn't have an arm before the surgeries. Still the best Jets QB in a long time.

I would've taken Pennington over a lot of other QBs. He wasn't exciting, but you can't teach accuracy and he didn't turn the ball over often. He's the anti-Cutler.

Pennington was also very tolerable as a person on and off the field. Unlike the QBs the Jets have had since, Pennington didn't believe that acting like an obnoxious celebrity was part of the job description.

That part is awesome I also like when the Cleveland coach is trying to explain who the hell Spurgon Wynn is to Billick before a preseason game.

I like the video of him doing the 40 and the three-cone and Kiper saying "We ranked 167 (or some such number) quarterbacks and physically, he was last. Dead last"

And Billick selected a QB in that draft.  I will say Spurgon Wynn comes across really well in that piece. Admits he wasn't prepared to play and that its his fault, and later dismisses any talk of Brady being a system QB or falling into a good situation. Seems like a good dude.

I don't find either set of stats predictive nor do I think the Pats should be running the ball as much this week.
Ok...but again the question wasn't whether you find it predictive.

He was asking for reasons Seattle isn't seen as big of a favorite as you might expect and despite what we think of that reason, that's one that's floating around.

Why does this feel as big as the 2011 super bowl? This is an opp to shovel the last pile of dirt on the ridiculous manning brady argument and cement brady as the goat.

Oh man am i fired up for tomorrow

I love the debate (how often do you get to watch 2 of the 5 greatest at any position face off in a semi-final?) but there's never going to be a consensus answer to this question.

Maybe if Brady wins this year he noses ahead, but for a large swath of fans Manning will always have the edge for any number of dubious reasons (he has the stats!, he had less talent!, he had worse defenses!, he had worse coaches!).

The "less talent" argument will be particularly hilarious as they introduce the Pats offense on CBS tomorrow. "And at tight end... Um... Let me check the box score here..."

I get that some fans, maybe a lot, will always hold Manning's career in higher esteem no matter what. But, as you said, if Brady wins tomorrow, the reasons will be dubious. It'll be almost laughable if Brady goes on to win the SB in two weeks. The number of AFC Title appearances Brady would have over Manning; the number of SB appearances Brady would have; the number of SB wins Brady would have; plus he also has the HoF numbers.

Tomorrow is everything for Manning fanboys. Everything.

That Belichick speech sounds like Bill Russell showing Celtics players the Laker memo before Game 7 of the 1969 Finals. (Something like "When the Lakers win balloons will fall from the rafters, the USC band will play 'Happy Days Are Here Again' and Chick Hearn will interview Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain."

Anyway, I know no Gronkowski, Hernandez, Welker, etc. but I keep thinking that there is no Miller, no Harris and Blount has been the best player on the planet the last couple of weeks and the Patriots have shredded this defense the last few years to the tune of 38 points per game over four games. Absent the turnovers in the first half this year it would be higher.  I expect a big big offensive output.

Talib, per PFT.com:

"I wasn't really in the NFL until I was in New England."

For very guy like Haynesworth, there have been 5 like this one. Make it all about football. Be at the top of you game. And it's surprising what happens, but really should not be.

This season has been a wondrous gift considering the many big problems.

I hope he's willing, if necessary, to leave money on the table in order to stay in the NFL next year.

Jim Nantz on Mike Frances's national show this morning:

I have done 70 Pats games the last 10 years. Saw Brady Friday night. Have NEVER seen him so confident. Have been thinking about this the last 36 hours. Forget this running the ball stuff; it is a smokescreen. I think the Pats are going to come out throwing the ball all over the place.

A shootout. Collins could loom large.

Yup, he's throwing a lot. Hope that Nantz read is correct and says good things about the health of the receiving corps. I think the Pats have some stuff saved up for this game, saw one guy breaking down film on another board that thinks they'll throw a PA down the sideline the first time they come out heavy and motion Hooman to a wing since the Pats have run a counter handoff like every time off that play for weeks.

Strong safety

Gregory didn't play Wk 12--should be important helping Collins cover J Thomas.

Duke Ihenacho hits hard and will be aggressive against the run, but they tend to bring him out on passing downs for--

Michael Huff got cut by Raiders for being 30 and replaced Ed Reed in Baltimore, but got torched by J Thomas so bad in Wk 1 that he got benched and cut. Picked up when Moore hurt.
They brought him in in the fourth quarter last week and he promptly gave up a TD to Keenan Allen. He looks bad and TB should test him deep.

This will be a tale of two halves: The Pats come out throwing, exhaust the Broncos defense while scoring points and then put the hammer on them in the second half by running it down their throats.Brady will also have an awesome game.

I think this will be the strategy.  I'm imaging a play action deep ball on the first series.

I'm really confident in this game, and its not even making me nervous. I think the Pats come out throwing, and Brady is going to carve up Denver's secondary. I like the Pats secondary being healthy, playing "bend don't break", and frustrating the Broncos into FG attempts.

WIN.

McDaniels is quite good at building up equity in this way. He'll run the same play off a given look for months, then buck the trend out of nowhere. It's an impressive display of patience.

If you feel a chill down below your feet, it is because hell has just frozen over:

From Borges:

As much as all of New England wants to see the Patriots win the AFC Championship today for the sixth time in 13 years and return to the Super Bowl, it really doesn’t matter what happens at Sports Authority Field at Mile High this afternoon. They’ve already won.

The Patriots came back to win that game because that is what they do. They fight. It’s the reason they are here so the issue for their fans should not be whether they beat the Broncos or not because even if they don’t they won more than a football game a long time ago.
They won your respect

I'm sorry - if the Patriots are going to come out passing more than people expected, what exactly does that have to do with Collins?

Absolutely nothing. It was a point he threw in as to why Denver may not run wild up and down the filed.

Collins has of late shown some good ability at dropping into coverage--I think it's a reference to his role in a shootout which would be a function of the Patriots having success passing the ball, not a direct connection to the Patriots passing game itself.

Yes, I get what Collins brings to the table, thanks. I was responding to what seemed like the (all-too-common) fallacy of assuming that if the Patriots choose to pass the ball a lot, then the Broncos will somehow automatically end up passing a lot too. dcmissle already clarified that this is not what he meant, however.

I hope they don't do that go-deep pass on the opening play. Brady never seems to hit it early in the game. It just seems to amp the crowd up even more than they already are.  I'd rather a fast paced, no huddle even, drive to move the chains. That's the best way to quiet a stadium.

Whether the Broncos pass more or pass less, Thomas will be key either way and, hence, Collins will be key. One great game does not make a career -- I think this is the biggest match-up in this game.

I think Siliga vs. Ramirez is a close second. They get some stability there and the knock-on effect on other parts of the defense magnifies.

yep, agree -- for a 3rd I'd say Vereen vs, I'm assuming, Trevathan. Vereen's drops have been glaring the last few weeks, and I think he needs to have a big game.

People need to relax on Vereen and the drops. The guy had surgery on his wrist. It's not like he needs to man up.

Win this.

Complete domination, and not in a good way.

Let's hope for a big fourth quarter, else we'll be rooting for the Seahawks/Niners to destroy Manning like Papa John's destroys intestines.
