Honing the craft of sports writing takes more than just practice. Sometimes, we also have to look to the legends of the game for lessons on capturing the story. A great place to start is the groundbreaking work of W. C. Heinz, one of sports journalism’s most influential figures and the father of the long-form sports story. Bill Littlefield, host of NPR’s Only A Game and editor of The Top of His Game, a new collection of Heinz’s best writing, will host a panel exploring the lasting qualities of a strong sports story. Joining Littlefield are Leigh Montville, an award-winning sportswriter, Boston Globe columnist, and sports biographer, and Charles Pierce, the lead political blogger for Esquire and writer for ESPN’s Grantland.
