This unfortunately must be health-related, I assume.
I doubt it. He was going to retire at the end of the season anyway. I would guess he pulled a Steve Spurrier and realized his last team was going nowhere and just walked away.

I look forward to him coming back and coaching future Wisconsin teams in the tournament after their coach leaves to go to another school!

All jokes aside, I have a ton of respect for what Bo did at Wisconsin as well as some begrudging hatred. His teams were always tough to play and many were smothering and boring. It was hard to watch most of his teams. I find it ironic that his most successful team (last year) was also his most enjoyable to watch. It was kind of like Scorsese winning Best Picture for the Departed, which was a notable stylistic departure from his past films. But I did love watching that team last year, despite Wisconsin being a conference rival. Regardless, Bo got the most of what he had. Wisconsin never got the best talent, but they were always a tough team to play, especially up at the Kohl Center. That was a testament to Bo and his coaching staff.

Heard Seth Greenberg talking about this earlier on Mike & Mike. From his comments, it would appear that this is something of a power play by Ryan, in the sense that he wanted to retire last year but the AD (Barry Alvarez) would not commit to giving the job to Greg Gard, his long time assistant. So Ryan chose to force the issue by leaving at a time where Alvarez had no choice but to give Gard a shot as interim coach.

There's something to be said for loyalty, I guess, but not a profile in courage ...
