If the government is still closed down and the Red Sox visit, they will have lost my support.

So the day of the visit looks like another big sales day for the fast food establishments in DC. Hope the Sox like rubbery burgers.

I wish they wouldn't go at all.

Tomase had an article on this today with an interesting perspective.

Me, too. If I do that, I can save a boatload of money by dropping Directv and watching my new team, the Rays on mlb.tv.

Per the article linked below, Cora leaves open the possibility that he may not attend.

Given that I started following the Red Sox in 1950 when I was growing up in New England and continued to follow them through the years I lived in France, India, Switzerland, Italy and in other states in this country--TX, OH, MD, PA, VA, I question whether fickle applies.

I'd say that you were the place within that "where the good lord split ya," but that would be demeaning to that which is evacuated from that place.

Past is past, present is present. If you'll renounce 60 years of fandom over a traditional Championship visit to the White House.... well, that's fickle, my friend.

But like I said... by all means. Burn your old jerseys and stop going to games. Less competition for seats for the rest of us.

    Cheers :D

Apologies for V&N intrusion, but just in the last couple of days we've seen (among other indignities): (1) news that POTUS attempted to illegally cut off federal disaster assistance to Puerto Rico; (2) a congressman telling another (California-born) congressman to "go back to Puerto Rico."

As appealing as the prospect of chowing down on congealed fast food in the presence of the racist traitor-in-chief must be, I can see why Alex Cora might be having some misgivings about attending.

As for me, I'll get over it and root for the laundry either way, but be pretty bummed out if they attend, shutdown or no shutdown.

Serious question. Would those upset that the Sox are going be also upset with me for taking my family to the White House next summer?

This is all so silly. 1)I will not burn anything, b/c the RS WS hoody I am wearing this moment is a very fond reminder of good times.
    2) Why would I care where you take your family? Unlike the Red Sox, you are nothing to me. It's only because of my affection for the Sox that I care about this at all.

I am curious to hear how Cora deals with this, especially Trump's recent threat to take monies set aside for Puerto Rico to build his wall. Maybe he'll bring a scrapbook with him of damage that has still not been repaired?

You assume correctly....and I'm not a fan either but if I got the chance I would prolly still go. The office of the Prez means a lot to me as a long time military/govy. Anyway, sorry to derail this...back to getting mad at the Sox.

Much like when I see a friend, family member or co-worker post something pro Trump on Facebook, I'm sure I'll be disappointed when I see who on the Sox goes on the White House visit. However, there is a glass half full, silver lining to all this: any Sox who boycotts the visit out of conviction will achieve god like status in my eyes. And I decided if any Sox does boycott the visit I'll make it a point to buy their name/number tee shirt and wear it when I go to vote in November 2020.

Didn’t we already do this exercise in virtue signaling once already and Nip locked the thread? Hopefully he arrives shortly again and puts this out of its misery.

The chattering classes of the Acela Provinces gonna chatter, meanwhile the 2nd best economy in my lifetime roars on.

I just want Skiponzo to have a good time. On the Sox trip to the White House, there's a bunch of stuff on Amazon Prime I need to catch up on. So I may not watch it.

Just curious as to why it matters to you and why your only post in this thread is to call for it to be closed. Plenty of other threads out there if this one isn't for you. FWIW I have no ill will toward the team or players for accepting to go to The White House nor do I fault any who choose not to go. I am slightly interested in the Alex Cora/Puerto Rico angle as he has a deeper, personal decision to make than some of others in the organization.

I can't see the post you are referring to, but the original demur in this thread was to the Sox going if the government were still shut down. As I posted more recently, that particular possibility seems less likely.

There might still be a shutdown on May 9. Remember the current agreement is only for 3 weeks. Hopefully they never go. Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors met with President Obama at a secure undisclosed location. For some reason, the team refused to publicize the meeting and disciplned the security guard who tweeted out the picture.

Judging by the "meanwhile the 2nd best economy in my lifetime roars on" comment, I'd guess that he gets uncomfortable when people are critical of Trump. And so he's calling for criticism of Trump to be censored, even when it's relevant to the topic at hand, which is the Red Sox White House visit.

For the non-subscribers, it would be nice to know which players have said they will attend.

    According to the article:

"Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Brock Holt, Mitch Moreland, Steve Pearce, Rick Porcello, and Chris Sale — have said they would attend."

“White Red Sox Attend White House Ceremony.” Jesus. Gotta think/hope the whole thing is off now. The local Wendy’s will be disappointed.

The exact wording from the article:

“I won’t be going there,” Betts said. “I decided not to.”

Rafael Devers also has said he will not attend with Eduardo Rodriguez saying it was unlikely. Xander Bogaerts and Eduardo Nunez are undecided.

Other Red Sox polled — including Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Brock Holt, Mitch Moreland, Steve Pearce, Rick Porcello, and Chris Sale — have said they would attend.

This thread is inherently and ineluctably V&N; if that's a problem it should have been locked immediately.

Also, I love Mookie Betts more than ever.

I honestly don't understand the calls for locking the thread when a more reasonable solution might seem to be moving it to V&N. It's clear that many here have strong feelings about the local nine as well as the current occupant of the White House. It's only natural that this topic is going to draw discussion as well as debate. Isn't that what SoSH is here for?

Sorry, I should have said "locked or moved". This is very much worth discussing, but if we're supposed to discuss it without getting political, that's absurd.

I rather hope he gets invited when he's a Senator; I expect him to play long enough such that the House wouldn't interest him.
