After watching the video and seeing the reports, I can't believe that people are calling for Ventura to be suspended.

He didn't throw at Eaton.
He didn't start the confrontation.
He didn't throw a punch.

About the only thing he's guilty of is immaturity - he responded to Eaton when he screamed at him while jogging to first.

The brawl - especially the feature bout between Samardzija and Cain - looks like the product of past confrontations.  They just used the excuse of a shouting match to come out of the dugout and continue their own personal feud.

Given all of the above, there's really no justification to suspend Ventura.  (Which is why he'll probably get 5 games.)

(BB2N film breakdown) Adam Eaton was pissed that Ventura quick-pitched him and started barking at Ventura as he was running to first, Ventura yakked back, benches cleared.

Ventura took responsibility because he realized he shouldn't have responded to Eaton.

Fucking knee-jerk reactors should dig deeper than finding stray fucking tweets and going off on moralistic tirades

series of pitches

Ventura hit Abreu in the elbow

Sale hit Moustakas on the arm he move to block pitch from hitting him in the head

Sale threw close to Cain's knees

I just watched the videos of all the incidents.  The worst was the Sale hit on Moustakas.  That should have got him tossed & possibly suspended.  It seemed obviously intentional based on location & that it came after the Abreu HBP.  It was directly at Moustakas head.  That was super-dangerous.  Some of the haymakers thrown in that brawl were no joke either, luckily I don't think any of them connected.

My interpretation is it is the Royals bragadocious style of play is breaking some unwritten rules leading them to get HBP all the time & then they retaliate causing brawls..  But, I could be mistaken.

So, despite quick public castigation of Ventura, when the story actually comes out, Eaton barked at him first?

Good to know. I hope Ventura can appeal his twitter verdict of guilty.

I just read that Baltimore considered forfeiting a game in Toronto to protest the condition of the turf.  Even when Buck is right about something (the turf does suck) he comes off as a douche.

Was told by a good source that Sale came to the Royals clubhouse in the 8th inning, looking to fight Ventura.

If Moustakas doesn't get his arm up in time, that entire sequence looks entirely different

I'm laughing because I can't for the life of me understand how that is responsive to my (probably ill-advised) attempt to make a funny.

Putting that aside, I agree completely.  Sale's pitch came very close to getting Moustakas in the head.  If there's a bad guy in the entire fracas/aftermath, he's it.

Oh, it wasn't. I was just adding to what I thought was your point that some who live by the tweet should wait until details emerge before knee-jerking themselves into a lather

Can't seem to find video of the Sale-Moustakas incident, do you happen to have a link handy? (apologies if I somehow missed one that is sitting in this thread)

There's something so stupid about baseball fights.

They're still fucking awesome though.

My favorite part of a baseball fight is ALWAYS watching the bullpens.  They all come charging in at the first sign of a brawl, and usually arrive after it's calmed down.  It's especially great if there's a second fight, because some of the relievers are just gassed after the second charge.

Alex Guerrero homers again today. Why this guy isn't starting every day is a mystery.
It's 20 PA.
Also he supposedly can't defend any position at an MLB average level.
Who is he replacing? Uribe I guess, but Justin Turner is coming off a terrific year too.

Hamilton has three steals off of Lester already by the 3rd inning.  Record is 6 by Eric Young.
If I'm Hamilton I'm bunting every time.

Nolan Arenado is redefining what it means to play third base. Challenging Simmons for the title of best defensive player in baseball.

Shark got 5, Herrera got another 2 (he previously got 5 for throwing at Lawrie) and Cain got 2.

MLB discipline is a joke.
Ventura doesn't throw a punch and gets 7 games.
Sale and Samardzjia get 5 (reasonable)

Craziest thing....
If Ventura is getting it as an "instigator" why the hell did Eaton, who actually starts both the shouting, and then walks onto the field after he's out to continue it NOT GET SUSPENDED AT ALL?

I hope they just drill a guy every game from now on.

edit- I had forgotten, this doesn;t go to an arbitrator on appeal either. It just goes right back to the same people who make terrible, inconsistent and arbitrary decisions on it in the first place.

It's a good question. The video angle at mlb.com is from behind him so I can't see whether he's actually saying anything or not, but even if he's not jawing it certainly looks like he's giving Ventura the big eff-you stare before Ventura says anything.

BTW, the White Sox commentary on that video really makes me appreciate NESN.

Eaton says Ventura said something first, then he did.

Ventura said Eaton started jabbering first.

And people in this thread seem to just be taking Ventura's word on this. Why do we have any reason to trust him?

To me it doesn't matter. Even if Eaton said nothing, Ventura yells at him then turns away and throws him out. Eaton then goes onto the field to yell at Ventura, it is the physical action that starts the brawl. The idea that Eaton couldn't control himself because Ventura said a bad word is ridiculous.

Though here is a video in which you can see him appear to talk first (or at the very least stare him down.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGB_IHRWaQM
(warning involves Harold Reynolds talking).

Volquez is already appealing a five game suspension!  Now he has another 5 game tacked on today.  Will be be going for the concurrent approach to serving the time?

No he isn't.
Are you thinking of Kelvin Herrera? He had a 5 game for throwing behind Lawrie, and got 2 for this (Not sure what for, nobody else seems sure why either, he wasn't ejected and nobody was talking about him before the suspensions came out as being particularly involved.)

I just saw Adrian Beltre swing at strike 3 and then appeal himself to the first base umpire. I missed seeing that. He loves that move, and it is basically nonsense.

The Royals broadcast team went on to say it was a better catch than Jeter's because Jeter only had to worry about falling into the stands while Gordon had to catch the ball as he was falling into the stands. Point is, we aren't the only one who think Jeter's play was overblown.

what just happened in the LAA game?

You can call a player out on fan interference (on a foul ball?)

I have heard that but never seen it implemented. You mean it happened? If so, good. Jeffrey Maier, remember?

It did. And Andrus was called out, the manager was ejected fir arguing after the reversion (automatic ejection) and it looked like the fan was ejected as well.

Things they are a-changing.

Break up the Astros. They just got done sweeping the A's in Oakland. Doesn't bother me because I hate the A's.

I only now caught the replay - is it just me, or did they eject the wrong fan? It looked like the one they ejected was trying to make the play, but the kid next to him was the one who actually got their glove on it?
