I haven't had this problem at all. Why don't you just turn off iMessage for a week or reinstall the software?
I've done a complete restore, which reinstalls the software. No luck there.

I can turn off iMessage, but then I don't get a lot of text messages.

Anyone have a recommendation on a car charger for a 5S? Looks like a lot of them out there no longer work after iOS 7. Even some from companies like Belkin, that are sold on Apple's site, have complaints about it being unauthorized.

If you have a USB port, it's just not worth doing anything except spending the $20 from apple. All the third party ones stink.

Unfortunately I don't, just a cigarette lighter.

Go to your nearest convenience/drugstore.  They'll have approximately 1000 cigarette lighter to USB attachments available for purchase.

I've had no problems at all with the AmazonBasics lightning cables.

First impressions of TouchID are amazing. Set a 12 character code and use TouchID most of the time. Way easier than a 4 digit passcode.

I also turned off simple passcode with TouchID. I don't see why you wouldn't. You hardly ever need to enter the passcode, so why not use a real alphanumeric password instead of a 4 digit PIN?

I hope the new iPads come with TouchID. I'm considering getting one to replace my 3rd gen iPad, but we'll see what the October 22nd event brings. The mini-style form factor should be a real plus, especially if they can get the weight down from ~1.4 to 1.0-1.1 lbs. That would really make the full-size iPad much more comfortable for one-handed use. I went with an LTE iPad 3 but I think I'll probably just go wifi with my next one; I've hardly ever used the cellular data. I thought it would be nice to have the option but realistically I just end up using my phone when there's no wifi connection. In the year and a half that I've owned it I've probably only bought data for about 4 months.

Does anyone else have issues using touch ID while the phone is plugged in? I'm about to bring mine to the Apple Store to have it looked at.

If you stick with chargers with this certification you should be fine.

What's up with having to do passcode / fingerprint every single time I open the phone? On my 4S i can set it to Immediately, 1 Minute, 5 Minutes, 15 minutes etc. on the 5S when finger print is on, it's only immediate? That's really f'ing annoying. I get TouchID is easy to use, but I'd like to at least set it at a minute or 5 minutes for listening to music etc.

Probably a dumb question, but it's hard to google an answer:

I have a 64GB 4S, I don't need 64GB anymore, and I plan to upgrade probably to a 5S but with 32GB.  I deleted enough off my 4S to get it low, but when I plugged it into iTunes to back it up, iTunes just put all the shit I deleted back onto it.

I guess my question is, before trading in my current phone do I need to get that backup below 32GB?  Is there a way to tell iTunes not to transfer music to the new phone (and I'll just do it manually after)?

Once you buy your new phone (but before you activate it) connect your old phone to iTunes, uncheck "sync music" then backup.

Next, activate your new phone and restore from your backup.

For those that hated the "cartoony" feel of the animations when opening apps and such, 7.0.3 took away all that for me. I'm not sure if it's a setting or what, but that's what happened. I didn't really hate it before (mostly got used to it), but I prefer this as it's more snappy.

edit - turns out it is a setting, and "reduce motion" actually reduces motion.

I think it looks weird with those animations just cut out. I understand turning it off if you have issues with motion sickness though. It just looks kind of jarring to see the screen change over without any kind of transition. Even in iOS 6 and lower there were animations, right? They were just faster and less noticed? Or am I misremembering that?

Maybe they should offer an animation speed slider or something in addition to the accessibility setting to remove motion? I wouldn't mind speeding them up for a "snappier feel" but I think it looks jarring to just have no animations at all.

So when I looked earlier, the Mac App Store was showing me that since my iLife 11 and iWork 09 were purchased and installed prior to the existence of the Mac App Store, I was going to have to purchase these apps if I wanted the new versions. I don't know what changed, but I'm now seeing the new versions available to install as free upgrades. Awesome!

Ugh, I had reduce motion turned on to remove the parallax wallpaper effect, which I just didn't like.  I enjoy the zooming animations, though.  Post-update I either have to lose the animations or keep parallax on.

I suppose the option would be nice, but personally I never understood the extra animation, so I'm a big fan. It feels a lot more snappy.

Turning off that motion shit just changed the way the phone feels for the better, big time. I actually loved the transition before but this is just so much better.

So I took the plunge and upgraded my iPhone 4 to the 5s yesterday. Haven't played around with it too much yet but instantly noticed how much lighter it feels and the speed upgrade is amazing.

What are you all using for cases? I was starting to look around but there are about 50,000 options out there. I'd like to put something on it to protect minor bumps and scratches but don't want something too bulky. Any recommendations?

I put a Ringke slim on my phone and it has been good thus far.  Very cheap on Amazon and it's about as minimal as you can get.  I can't say i've dropped it with it on, so I can't vouch for its toughness.

I'm using this. I like bumpers, but wanted some scratch protection for the back without completely encasing the thing. That case is a good compromise.

Ordered the 5S through work today (I am an Android guy off the clock).....looks like a heck of a phone....nice upgrade from the 4S

I have a 4S as a personal phone (Which i'm getting rid of) and a 5S as a work phone. Going back to the 4S is painful.

Bought the Mini Retina around 11 am for the wife as a Christmas gift.

Pulled the trigger on the 27" iMac w/ 512gb sad too. Now to see if I actually need Airport Time Capsule.

Wound up picking up the Retina Mini today. This thing kicks serious fucking ass. I was worried about leaving the 10inch screen behind but holy shit is this better. It's much easier to hold and weighs nothing. Very happy.

Even with how light the air is you're happy going from the 9.7" screen to 7.9"? I looked at them both the other day, and it felt like the Air was light enough to me that I'd still want to keep the larger screen. Personally I'm still debating buying the air or waiting on next year's model with Touch ID.

The weight never bothered me. It was having to use two hands and limiting my thumb usefulness. That is not a problem with the mini.

I couldn't possibly describe how much I love the iPad mini.  It's just a companion device, it isn't always the right device, but it's a real joy to use when it is and it's so damn portable that I always have it on me for when the right times arise.  With the full sized ipad, i just found myself not wanting to bring it with me, not as much because of weight, more because of general bulk.  Picking one up after using even the older mini for a year...the full sized ipad feels absurd and unnecessarily large.

This is one area that the Google folks who fast followed after Apple got right, although I don't think Apple could have released an iPad mini when they released the first ipad.  There was a very real problem back then of "isn't that just a super sized iphone?" that needed to be overcome to establish the market.  We were treated to so many mocking photos of people holding ipads up to their ear, if the mini had been the first gen I think it may have been ridiculed into failure.  Weird digression from the discussion at hand, but it seemed almost relevant.

In any case, I think the mini's size is perfect, with the probable exception of being unsure of whether there are any keyboard cases worth using, if you have that requirement.  It's awfully small for keyboard viability, although I think clamcase is making one and the later zagg's might just make it plausible.  I suppose if i were going to try to use ipad as a primary computing device or even a majority computing device, I'd probably need the Air to give myself a bit more flexibility.

I carry my iPad 3 around with me most of the time, the only times I don't have it with me I feel okay using my iPhone. If you move to the mini so that it's so portable you always have it on you, is there even a real reason to keep a smartphone? At that point, why not just get an LTE iPad mini and a dumb phone for voice calls?

I was just about to ask this.  I'm about to get the 5S, but it crossed my mind that the Retina Mini + data might be all I need - with FaceTime audio, Google Voice, Skype etc. I could easily make calls when necessary.  I'm just wondering a) if that's practical, and b) if there are intangibles that make the 5S worth it (camera, fingerprint scanner, smaller footprint, etc.).

edit: the big advantage of this plan would be moving over to a provider like Ting, where I could get a hotspot, and giving AT&T the boot.  Currently you can't get an iPhone on Ting but data is not hard to do.

double edit:  looks like Ting just started quietly beta-testing iPhones.  Very awesome.

I wish I could justify buying one of those. Goddamn that is a nice computer. If I wanted to drop $5K on a computer system I'd buy one of those and pair it with Dell's new 24" 4K monitor: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=860-BBCD&baynote_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=0&~ck=baynoteSearch
