And suddenly... ponying up for a subscription is something actually worth considering.

From BSMW:

Glenn Ordway mentioned on his Big Show Unfiltered broadcast yesterday that WEEI.com baseball writer Alex Speier is heading to the Boston Globe.

While no official confirmation is in the offing at the moment, the move would be a tremendous addition for the Globe, as has been well documented here, I believe Speier is the single best baseball writer in this town.

For evidence of his awesomeness, here's the other Alex Speier thread.

Meanwhile, this is a HUGE hit for WEEI.com. I'm sure Rob Bradford did everything he could to try to retain his services, but he doesn't cut the checks for Entercom.

Makes me wonder whether there'll be further rearranging on the beat at the Globe. If Abraham and Cafardo are 1-2, either they're creating a role specifically for Speier, or something else is in the works. I can't imagine he'd make the jump for the coverage table scraps.

Could it be? Could they be transitioning Cafardo out?

Shank makes them money, as incongruous a thought as that may be. He ain't going anywhere.

A Cafardo buyout? Sure, I could see that. I could also see them making Alex their national baseball writer.

Can you imagine a Sunday Notes column by Speier? I'm giddy.

It's probably TGTBT, however.

From your lips to God's ears.

I think Abraham is pretty good. Cafardo is definitely the weak link.

Speier with the notes column, prospect coverage, baseball commentary and analysis, and assorted podcasts would be phenomenal.

I can just see the J.P. Ricciardi/David DeJesus/Bobby Valentine royalties drying up right before our very eyes.

If true, today is a very good day.

This would be awesome. I hope he keeps his podcast if he does move over, it's a must listen every week.

Not here
I believe Speier is the single best baseball writer in this town.

This is an opinion I share. I also second the notion of a huge hit to WEEI, and holy crap, a sunday notes column by Speier would be the best since...Gammons in his heydey? Fucking phenomenal is what it would be.

I'v got wood just thinking about it.

If only there were someone who works at the Globe and was also a member of this site who could give us a heads up... hmmm...

If the Globe knows what they're doing, they'll clean house and make Speier their head writer. That's the only way I would consider reading them.

I'm willing to bet Speier is at the Globe less than a year before he goes national somewhere.

I'm also willing to bet the Globe knows that and won't do a complete restructure for a very good talent that likely isn't going to be there in 2016

I think you're right, URI. The Sunday Notes column is a relic. A guy as smart, young and talented as Speier will land on one of MLBs cool advanced stats broadcasts.

I've long thought that Speier was absurdly over-talented for WEEI.com (does anyone actually read this website?), but the job has serious lifestyle perks that being a 24/7 National Media guy doesn't have. I think Speier would thrive in a Jonah Keri type role if he could find one.

Pretty savvy move by the Globe.  They have to get content that people are willing to pay for.

This stinks as I would never pay for the Glob. Even BMac (right there with Speier IMO) is kind of behind a pay wall. I think it's 6 free articles per month with Projo. Guess that means more Optimus Papi and lxt for me. FML.

Is it also possible that his deal with the Glob gives him the flexibility to appear elsewhere?

Behind
Oh God No.  I need Alex Speier, dissecting the Red Sox, for free somewhere (not behind a pay-wall), for the rest of my living life.

Cater to me Alex!  Think about me!!!

Chad, do you know who is replacing him at WEEI or when that announcement will be made?

Strange that the Globe would hire the foremost Red Sox expert in the Boston media market and then have him spend some of his time writing about other sports.

My anonymous source tells me that maybe this will happen. But who knows?

It doesn't sound like it. From Chad Finn's article linked upthread:

Speier’s work will be featured primarily on BostonGlobe.com, where he will write about all of aspects of Boston sports, with an emphasis on the Red Sox. His work will appear in the print edition on some occasions.

It makes sense to me that Speier would mostly be on Boston.com. That's a better forum for Speier's thorough, leave no stone unturned analyses.

Fergie Jenkins for John Poloni (and cash), for a more local slant, or maybe Al Lyle for Danny Cater since they have the same sideburns.

What a self-important piece by Tomase.

Who is looking for a formal introduction from him?  He's not Bob Ryan.  Just start writing substantive articles, meat.

Who the hell thought he was hired to be a fan? What a clown.

I've been skipping over his articles in the Herald since he was hired, I'm thankful he's on WEEI now he'll be even easier to ignore.

Speier to Tomase is a bigger dropoff than Francona to Valentine.

Then you missed this gem:

And its not because I consider myself above the masses, although come to think of it, if the footie pajamas fit ...
He realizes "the masses" are who columns like this are written for, right? Way to alienate yourself from your readership in your first article.

This is like trading Bill Lee for Stan Papi.  Actually worse.  Stan Papi was just a lousy player and not a complete dick.
