    I support this. First and foremost Price, then behind him Cora.

    Well and the offense was complete dogshit.

    If the ump is giving MFY pitchers six inches below the strike zone it really doesn’t matter who he puts in. Bottom line is this is MLB’s marquee series of the post season and they want it to go 5. I bet Porcello gets a great zone at the toilet Monday night.

    Whether Moreland is hurt or not, I'd like to see Pearce in at first as well.

    You will notice I said "split in NY" so yeah. I think the Sox are capable of beating the Yankees over the next two games.

    I only caught one quick glance of the shift against Leon, but it looked like they gave him the whole third base side. He’s a decent bunter. I’m not sure why they don’t try it.

    at this point the Yankees should be paying us to start David Price against them. Just opt out and leave me alone, dude. Take your money and go away.

    I hope we see Holt and Pearce in game 3. Holt was hot at the end of the season and he hasn't played at all in these two games. Moreland looks hurt and Pearce might be able to get some hits. Devers deserves a shot at 3rd because Nunez isn't doing anything particularly well.

    While Moreland did manage one hit tonight, Pearce just seems more likely to run into one regardless of who is on the mound. Mitch, right now, seems like he can only hit a pitch that lands exactly in his wheelhouse or within reasonable range of it, and everything else he swings over the top of.

    I am of the mind he won more games with this team than anyone could. There is no pen, 2/3 of an order. He has been incredible

    I think Mitch is hobbled a bit, grabbed at the hamstring on the run scoring double by Kinsler.

    The “there’s no pen” shit is stupid. The bullpen gave up three runs tonight over seven innings and that was on a 3-run homer off... the #5 starter.

    Damnit X was hitting 4th, well top 3 hitters then.
    I almost went to the boxscore to be sure but I didn't want to relive it.

    The pen was actually quite good this year and the lineup, obviously score a shitload of runs. Cora has been fine, probably good in the clubhouse.

    We always knew this team had pitching issues. But the Sox offense has been basically been shit for all but two innings of this series. If that doesn’t turn around then we just saw the last game at Fenway this season.

    David Price seems like he’s too dumb to listen to Pedro.

    Pedro pitched the 99 Game 5 completely different and it worked because he’s brilliant.

    Price moves on the mound.

    So we basically lost the HFA. Bullpen had a good outing following a bad one. Consistency is so underrated. The toilet has not been good to the pen.

    Need more production from the bottom of the order, and Mookie needs to show some more of that MVP stuff

    First one who suggests Price out of the pen deserves what they get

    What comes next could be fun, or not

    There’s a difference between being a good regular season manager and a good postseason manager. Resting guys, trying out different things and letting guys play through slumps during the regular season all makes perfect sense.

    In the playoffs you have to be ruthless and play your best players, simple as that. Cora didn’t do that tonight and while that probably didn’t affect the ultimate outcome given Price’s shittiness, they simply weren’t put in the best position to win.

    The “shitty” bullpen ex-Porcello and EdRo:

    8.2 IP (well, there’s your problem)
    7 hits
    7 walks
    2 ER
    WHIP = 1.61
    ERA = 2.07

    Edit: take out Kimbrel, who gave up a HR and you get:

    7.1 IP
    6 hits
    7 walks
    1 ER
    WHIP = 1.77
    ERA = 1.22

    SSS... but still... the relief pitchers not named Kimbrel, Porcello or Rodriguez have given up one run. Bums.

    His numbers vs NY, his numbers in Yankee Stadium, the crowd would eat him alive, the Yankees feast on left handed pitching, common sense. Want more?

    Why do we expect Price out of the pen against the Yankees to be any better than Price starting against the Yankees? It’s not like his issue has been fatigue as the game moves on, he sucked from the get-go tonight.

    I actually suggested this months ago arguing that it just might be the best use of Price. I get why they didn’t go that route of course but it wasn’t an invalid idea.

    0-9 with a huge era in the postseason as a starter is very hard to ignore.

    Because he's been better in the playoffs out of the pen than when starting. For whatever reason. It's worth a try.

    I doubt Price will throw another pitch in this series unless it’s as a LOOGY in Yankee Stadium or if Sale shits the bed in game 5, which he’s not going to do. Maybe he pitches an inning against the 7-8-9 guys at some point.

    Betts, Benintendi and Martinez were a combined one for 11 tonight. I would argue that, along with Price not pitching well, was what failed to put the Sox in the position to win.

    People wanted Devers and yet he looked bad in his one AB. People were upset that we didn't see Wright last night (now we know why) and for a number of other moves and non-moves the past two games. I don't know if I can judge Cora that harshly because the reality is that this is a pretty stacked roster and several top players didn't perform well. Unless you think managers can coax performances out of players - and I don't really think they can, especially at this level - I am not sure what Cora did terribly wrong here.

    In the end, you may well be right and Cora may be overmatched. Boone may well be a much better manager or maybe the Sox really do need a more veteran guy. However I would argue that even beloved guys like Tito or guys pundits like to laud as geniuses like Maddon have looked bad as a result of their team's performances in the post-season.

    These are short series and players can play poorly - David Ortiz was 2-22 against Detroit in the 2013 ALCS. That wasn't on Farrell and Ortiz clearly redeemed himself after that. But these games can make even the best players look like they, and their managers, are simply terrible.

    I know it’s 1-1, but I feel like we’re down in this series. I think because in game 1, the Sox grabbed the lead but the MFY kept grinding. In game 2, after the MFY grabbed the lead, the Red Sox weren’t competitive at all.

    Cora is not overmatched. And knowing now that Wright is out makes yesterday’s puzzling moves make perfect sense.

    However, unless there’s more secret info, I think sitting Holt and a Devers today was a mistake, despite Kinsler’s wall-ball double. The only other mistake, IMO, was leaving EdRo in to face Sanchez after he screwed up the Judge infield hit and walked Voit. I don’t recall if anyone was. Warmed up then, but he should have brought in a righty. That’s not hindsight. I grumbled at the time. Thought Cora had an appropriately quick hook for everyone except EdRo.

    But none of that really matters. Cora didn’t lose this game. Price and bad swings did.

    There’s no evidence in a tied series between two teams that won 100 plus games that Cora is overmatched. Sosh hates less than perfection. So on and so on.

    Lefties throwing to these big righty mashers has been what I’ve been worried about pretty much all year and tonight they got us. This is a really tough lineup.

    Agreed and this is why I want Devers to get a start. We know what his defense is like. We know he’ll likely chase some balls out of the zone. But he has some real pop and this lineup doesn’t have much outside of Mookie, JD, and X. Benintendi only has 3 HRs since June. Our C spot is a hitting wasteland. JBJ has some power but we’re probably not going to see it against playoff pitching. Moreland is a mess. Kinsler is a mess. Holt has no power.

    This Yankees lineup has HR threats in basically every spot. We do not. I think Cora needs to maximize the offensive potential and deal with the potential defensive liabilities, at least to start the game.
