One down; two to go. Do not let these fuckers up. We need David Price to change his history. Win.
Yankees showed life after being down, so they’re of the mind that they’re coming back with momentum against a pitcher they hit well, who fails to perform in the postseason.
So step on their pig fucking throats and don’t let go until their bowels are all over the floor and your new shoes are ruined.
Also, put in a Brockstar!
I need to see some Devers, as well.
There is no Yankee Porch in Fenway. Price will dominate.
Holt, Devers, Moreland in
Kinsler, Nunez, Pearce out
The Sox should win this game. That said, hoping for an easy victory and/or a quick series that eliminates the Yankees is probably asking too much. If any series should be expected to go the full five games, its this one. Finally, we are probably in store for more close games with long innings, deep pitch counts and relievers trying to be fine.
This is AL East baseball and this is the Red Sox and Yankees. It ain't pretty and it ain't for the faint of heart. And that is what makes a series like this unlike anything else in baseball or sports.
I’m still stoked that Severino will only get one game.
I don't wanna wait...
Finally laughed at that .gif.
Price just needs to pitch like Kershaw tonight: 85 pitches through 8. What the hell, then go ahead and be your own closer with that pitchcount. Still, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Kimbrel only had 22 pitches. It’s the playoffs. Use him Saturday night if need be.
Also, they had almost a week off, they should be fine. Maybe some of the bullpen guys can calm down those overly live arms too.
It’s gotta be Price then Wright tonight I suspect. Then EdRod, but I’m guessing they’d prefer to use him in ny after porcello/eovaldi.
Wright’s out, most likely. Knee balked up against
Quoting a tweet from ESPN’s Marly Rivera:
Alex Cora said Steven Wright complained about his knee, and wasn't available today. "He had an MRI during the night. And we'll know more about it tomorrow."
What the...how does that flare up right before the biggest game of the year???
They have almost no path to 108 outs without Wright. They were going to need 4-5 innings from him this series.
chance of beating Houston? Off the board
Pretty much this.
Maybe I’m miscounting but...don’t need 108 only need half that
Well technically the Sox themselves need to make outs or the games will never end . . .
My guess is they knew it in the morning, maybe even when they put him on the roster and figured that if it turned out to be ok then it didn't matter and if it turns out to be serious then it's bad enough to keep him out of the postseason entirely and they can replace him with one of "The Others" anyway
Sounds like earlier in the year. It flared after 3 or 4 starts. He said it got much worse when he switched to starting. It seems to have just taken a bit longer with relieving.
I wonder if pedroias odds just got longer.
Craig Breslow once pitched 4 times in the ALCS throwing absolute slop against a high-powered offense and gave up zero runs. Anything is possible.
I suppose you could say they got 1 of those innings from porcello (2/3) and Kimbrel (1/3) last night.
The other guys aren't all going to suck in the same game again.
Nice win but I didn't care for the pucker factor those last couple of innings.
On a personal note I'm headed Fenway today for game 2 with my brother and law. We were thinking of taking the T in from Riverside. Typically we would drive in and we park but I'd like to avoid it. I need some help from SOSH - with the 8:15 start how late will the trains run?
This is the night where Price goes 7 or 8 and dominates the Yanks...now in fairness I think I’ve been saying that for a couple years, but Price is good enough where it had to happen one of these times, it’s got to happen even if by accident as a positive stop on the range of potential outcomes, right? Right?!?
A good starting point would probably be getting Sanchez out. He of the 5 home runs in 13 ab’s off Price.
Although looking at the BvsP numbers aren’t all doom and gloom...Betts, Benintendi and Martinez all have hit Tanaka hard. So, Dominate Price, score runs, Win Sox!!!
I hope David Price can channel some Kershaw.
Also, this story isn’t new, but the Tom Rinaldi treatment is.
Warning, dust is likely.
This seems to be an amazing overreaction.
So without Steven Wright they have almost no chance of beating NY and no chance at all of beating Houston?
Tonight the Sox have Kimbrel, Barnes, ERod and Eovaldi ready to go. If Price is decent then that should be enough, if he sucks it doesn't matter who is in the bullpen. Take it one game at a time and piece it together it isn't ideal but it sure as hell isn't over.
My experience is somewhat dated, but the MBTA was committed to getting Sox fans back to their stations, regardless of game ending time.
This is an incredible statement, even for a game thread. Steven Wright isn’t the fucking fruitbat, he is a journeyman knuckleballer. While it might be tougher, saying he is the deciding factor is crazy.
I don't believe for a second hey had to wait overnight for the results.
Hope for it Al, but unfortunately Price has never been Kershaw.
There is no "ideal" in this circumstance. The NYY are really good. Their biggest weakness is starting pitching. The Sox is their bullpen and bottom of the Order. Sox got to the NYY starter and 1st NYY reliever allowed a couple of IRs. Other wins will have other recipes.
Cora did a great job of keeping a ladder built with toilet paper and chewing gum upright.
Wright's a tough loss. But if he's the difference, then it probably wasn't working anyway.
True....Price had a 4.4 WAR this year, Kershaw 4.0. (B-ref).
In the thread last night, people were complaining that Cora was managing with an eye to game two.
Thanks Rev. I was looking on site and must have missed it. I'm not sure I want to roll the dice and possibly leave the game early.
Oh yeah, Price is better than Kershaw and has always been. I always learn something each day.
It's dated, but I went to game 4 of the ALCS in 2004, which ended around 1:30 am. And they actually held a train which wound up leaving Kenmore at 2 am
EXACTLY!!! What a bunch of weenies we are!! We’re fucking winning this thing!!! Wright (!!!) was not the damn linchpin! This TEAM is winning this series and the next and the next!
Nope. Just this year. By one measure.
Price has been very good since July, but his recent lousy start vs. NYY is a bit worrisome. Tanaka has been very good since July, but his recent lousy start against Boston is a bit encouraging.
Hopefully the post-season win streak vs NY will hit six tonight.
Just announced, For every chant of “Yankees Suck” Pete Gammons is going to donate a dime to sexual assault victims in Winnipeg.
More news as it comes to hand.
Gonna guess that Price gives us 7, allows one run, and strikes out 6 against 1 walk.
yep, no way in hell this offense can't put up double digits and have an easy game once or multiple times. no way no way.
they got through a close game last night. it's time for the blowout.
5-0 is a playoff blowout.
If they had a decent bullpen and Sale had more stamina, it would have been evident.
But he can be for one game. Price had one complete game this year (OK, v Baltimore) and three 8 inning games. Yankees are tough. I’ll settle for 7 IP.
