West called a great game behind the plate, too. He's been great.

Nunez/Pearce and Beni probably 2 of top 5 defensive plays in franchise history like 8 days apart. Amazing.

Not that Mookie and Beni aren't great defenders usually, but refreshing to win that game with their gloves and arms, and Jackie's bat, and not the other way around.

I have been telling Astros fans on Twitter it is too bad all the cameras were aimed at the RedSox dugout.

I don’t know which guys you were listening to and so maybe we heard some different things but some of the trajectory discussion I heard was plainly confusion about a different but related rule.

If a fan touches the ball at the boundary but does not prevent a catch, so no interference, trajectory matters for runner placement — usually 2 or 4 bases. I thought some of the TBS guys were plainly thinking about that rule in some of their comments.

Incredible game. I can't remember another game that ended with 3 great defensive plays among the last 9 outs like that.
I'm shocked that Bregman swung at the first pitch after Kimbrel walked 3. Thank you Beni!!!

Craig Kimbrel’s Red Sox career so far:

    108 Saves
    11 blown saves
    14.9 K/9 ratio
    0.906 WHIP
    2.44 ERA

    That is all.

Sale might even be good for an inning. So the dude shat a few pounds. Clearly, he didn't need those pounds in the first place.

    This. Thank you.

The line is painted on the top shelf of the wall, not the side. A ball that hits the top and bounces back onto the field is in play because it didn't cross the line. These aren't the Monster seats.

Those hands were beyond the inside face of the wall.

I haven't read the thread, but did anyone other than me think Pearce broke his neck when he came down between the bench seat and dugout wall? He sure could have used some Astro interference at that point. Kind of an assholish non-response if you ask me.

I didn't think the Astros did anything wrong there, to be honest. Nobody was sitting there. Sure, they didn't run to his aid to catch him, but it's not like they all moved out of the way to let him plunge to his death or anything.

Hard to tell, but I thought Mookie reached into the stands and that it should have been called a home run. Red Sox hitters did a great job tonite laying off balls that broke out of the strike zone.

I was outraged - found myself screaming at the TV - when Cora didn't keep Barnes in the game for the 8th inning. He needs to consider a new closer. as does Dombrowski with Kimbrel's contract up after this season. He is overpaid and on the downhill side of his career.

Cora won this game in spite of his love affair with Kimbrel. Strangely, he might have helped himself for tomorrow by preserving Barnes and overusing Kimbrel who, hopefully, he cannot call upon.

For someone who became a Red Sox fan in 1949 and after all the years of agony, it's great to see that we now win games like this. Has the fate of any other franchise changed so dramatically for the good as ours has since 2004? Maybe the Dodgers from 1955 to 1988.

Every team does this now. Help your own guys, absolutely no help for the other guys. Not until the play is over at least.
It’s fair enough too in my opinion.

On the fan interference - there is a still photo that is particularly telling (posted all over the place so I won't bother here). In the photo a fan in a white shirt can be seen reaching towards Mookie, right hand extended. His left hand is gripping the wall, his fingers clearly covering part of the yellow line. By definition that hand is indisputably in the field of play. His right hand is in front of his left - therefore it must also be in the field of play. The fan that actually touched Mookie's glove can be seen to have his hands in front of white shirt's right hand - therefore they are also, by every law of physics, within the field of play. The only thing that matters thereafter is a judgement as to whether the ball was catchable - it doesn't matter if it was three rows back - if a fan reached into the field of play and interfered with a player's attempt to field a catchable ball - fan interference. The "field of play" part appears reviewable - the "catchable" part is ump's discretion and, presumably, non-reviewable.

If Steve Bartman had simply reached over the wall and punched Moises Alou in the face he'd be a hero now.

For shame. I went to bed at the end of the seventh last night.

I just watched Mookie’s throw on Kemp. I literally chuckled out loud like a diabolical villain.

At least one run scored in every full inning except for the ninth.
6 total LOB in the ninth.
    What an arm wrestle.

    A few thoughts:

Kimbrel’s pitch to Bregman. It appears that Leon was setup low and away. He missed the target high and inside.

Someone mentioned Bregman swinging at the first pitch. I think he thought that Kimbrel was wild and that he was going to put one down the pipe to get the first strike.

Cora only had Workman & Hembree left as relievers plus Price. Was anyone else available? What if the game went into extra innings?

Loved the JBJ homer. Was surprised that the pitcher threw a fastball.
Would have thrown only breaking pitches as he seems ineffective against them.

I don’t know how you guys survived that in real time, at that time of night. Just got through a quick watch of the last few innings. Being able to fast forward through much of Kimbrel with one eye open was essential to my mental health. Insane.

Also insane that this series, and the major beats, have played out almost exactly as the last, so not sure what happens in a Game 5. Im sure the Astros will be huge favorites tonight, and it’s nice to get 3 shots to close it out, but screw it mine as well get it done with one.

On the flip side, Beni’s catch has to be up there with Butler’s INT in terms of game-saving walk-off plays, right? (I know that Butlers wasn’t literally a walk-off but it led to kneel-downs so in essence it was)

I dunno. Butler's pick was SOOOO unexpected. We hadn't yet seen the practice video of the Pats working on just that play when it was made and I think we all thought that Lynch would just run it in there, or at least try to. When the ball started to travel to the OF, I thought that Beni had a good shot at making a very tough play, just as I thought Reddick might catch Mookie's ball. And then there's the fact that Butler's play was in the football equivalent of the 7th game of the WS and not in a step along the way.

I don't really mean to quibble. That catch was a massive sportsgasm, just like Butler's. And we are insanely lucky to be able to bat this around. But I can't put those two plays on the same level.
