Are we certain this is it? Are we completely sure that Lurie wouldn't bring him aboard?

No, I would actually bet that Miami would pick him up Sept 1 when rosters expand, but by then this thread will be long locked and someone can start another one in the MLB section which won't be my problem. :)

Except for that pesky "Former Yankees" thread

The arod thing to do is find some new temporarily undetectable ped, sign somewhere, break the record or get damn close, then get popped again.

I hope A-Rod goes deep tonight just to ramp up the pressure to re-sign somewhere else. He can still be a "True Yankee". It would surely be a significant ticket boost for some team in Florida.

He could only pinch-hit for Miami, he really has shown no signs of being able to play the field. He could theoretically DH for TB, but again, he is 4 for his last 43, so good luck with that.

Beltran was thought to be a corpse in 2014. 4 for 43 isn't great but I think he can still hit.

This might be the best piece I have ever read on A-Rod, in today's NY Post via Joel Sherman. Interestingly the print edition uses the word 'insecure' in the headline instead of 'vain', insecure is much more accurate.

http://nypost.com/2016/08/11/a-rod-was-too-vain-to-see-he-was-always-good-enough/
The writers are going to miss A-Rod. He was a great story every day, even in his lengthy decline. Since this is New York and negative press is what sells, the focus now will switch to some of the other underachievers on this roster. CC is likely the next target because of his huge salary and mundane performance. Ellsbury is right behind him. In fact, he's the next whipping boy.

CC is pretty damn likable, has OK numbers this year for a back of the rotation guy, and will be gone after one more season. Ellsbury seems like a much better bet.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Why is he doing another press conference right now?
I would venture to draw attention away from some major Olympic event......? (Ya gotta go with what works for you.)

CC is pretty damn likable
I could tell some second hand stories to back that up, completely different stories from my wife and from my son.

Morbid ceremony. Dark clouds, sprinkling and his mom and sister wearing sunglasses.

I don't, I wish he disappeared a month ago, or three years ago. Tomorrow can't come soon enough.

No doubt. Other than the contract, he would not nor should have come back this season for sure. Same with Jeter. He was an embarrassment his last season. It's ego for sure and not isolated to these guys either. This is all they have done their entire lives. I imagine that lifestyle is very hard to walk away from even when the money is guaranteed. And to have to do it during the season is especially tough no matter a big star or not.

Actually A-Rod was great for 2/3 of last season, and at the start of the season guys like Judge and Sanchez and Austin were likely not ready, so I had no problem with him playing this year, but it's been clear for a month or two that he is cooked.

Just saw his interview during the rain delay. I like how it ended when he was pretty honest about screwing up and how thankful he was that the Yankees still want him associated with the team in a future role. And after reading the article on ESPN today regarding some of the background on that, I'm good with him helping out with some of the young guys if he choses to follow through after he's done playing for sure.

It's ending better than I expected after all the biogenesis drama.

Was in a bar/restaurant that had the pre-game ceremony on the TV. When I saw it start to pour, I leaned over to my wife and said "even God wants A-Rod to STFU and go away."

Guy behind us laughed pretty hard.

Edit: my post seems out of place after EE's thoughtful post. I feel bad. (A little. Maybe.)

Snort. Was he as honest and regretful as he was when he confessed to doing PEDs during his TX years?

So he lies about PEDs, so what? Over the next week SoSH is going to be celebrating track athletes that make Arod look like a fucking amateur when it comes to PED usage. That's the great thing about track, you get to see what fully doped humans are capable of.

As a long-time A-Rod observer (mostly unwillingly), I think it's definitely true that he has presented a pretty different public image since coming back in 2015. He knew he could have easily been done and this was all bonus, which I think made it easier for him to relax and act like himself, maybe for the first time ever.

Pretty excited that this era is finally over, McCann needs to go next.

It is ending better than we all imagined. But all I think when I read that article is: "He is going to ditch the Yankees for Miami isn't he?"

I've been watching the highlights and videos of ARod and I'm split. Part of me believes it's really self-serving, to get that same type of recognition that Jeter, Rivera, Mo got. But on the other hand, there were a couple of cool moments like playing the field in the ninth and the RBI double early seemed to be a very big deal.

I think he'll play somewhere else, but that afterward the Yankees will still welcome him back as a guest instructor or some similar role. From what I'm reading there is some legitimate interest in ARod working with young players, so if he eventually wants to do that, I think the door will still be open.

Can't see why it wouldn't be.

I'm not so sure after that end, but either way, NY ditched him, not vice-versa. They are totally happy to have him take any playing chance he can get, and then come back and do some one on one coaching as EE said.

I think he may have gotten hit with lightning and gained strength for that first inning AB actually, his best AB in a month or two at least.

Michael Kay said that during the pregame ceremony, the announcer was saying "22 years in the big leagues, the last 12 of those in Yankee pinstripes", but over the Yankee part of that there was a huge thunderclap. A-Rod audibly said 'wow', evidently the crowd understandably started laughing (the ones not running for cover), you just can't make up any part of the A-Rod story.

It looks like ARod, when he came out for the ninth to play third, a weight was lifted off his shoulders, like it's over.
Girardi asked him if he wanted to play third and he said "just one out", I think a lot of him was happy not to embarrass himself in any way and he is risking that if he tries with another team. But 700 must be so temptingly close...

It's not just about Ortiz, though. Manny Ramirez was suspended for PEDs and if you expect us to believe he was only using in 2009, well, that's ridiculous.
The point isn't so much the cheating, but a fan base celebrating a victory as part of their illustrious history while denying perhaps the biggest contributor to that victory any credit or affection.

Sox fans don't deny Manny, Trot, Insane Asshole Schilling were part of 04.

I have a bunch of answers for that (2004 is so wildly different from 2009 in the respective team's histories for starters), but instead I'm going to follow up on what I said the other night and lock this thread.

Cause it's gone daddy gone, A-Rod's gone away.
