I've made my feelings on Liverpool clear and I really do not like red, but those kits are gorgeous.

Hey @SocrManiac - you played goalie in college, no? How much simulation was there at that level?

I played very competitive HS here in Mass, and we didn't see very much. But friends of mine who went on to play D1 said it was a different game. Not so much in the diving but in a lot of other ways that more closely mirrored the professional game.

Wijnaldum gets outmuscled by Fernandinho in midfield, De Bruyne with a sweet through ball to find Aguero in alone, 1-0.

Liverpool wasteful with the positions they've gotten into thus far

Too easy for City.

Matip is at fault there...the last Liverpool defender was left high and dry trying to cover both Aguero and Jesus.

I'm watching on my phone, but is it quiet at the Etihad or is my phone just shit?

Good call...I was trying to figure out who blew that because between Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, someone was getting behind that back line.

There's about 100 fans singing 'Oh the City we do' - not quite Parkhead but not nothing.

@Dummy Hoy Well, my college days were 15 years ago, so I wouldn’t be shocked if things had changed. I’m not sure it’s that different at any level, though.

It was definitely a cultural thing. Simulation is a learned skill, no different than any other on the pitch. I had a Brazilian club coach in high school that outright taught it. The Brazilian kids soaked it up. The more “American” guys’ reactions ranged from bemused to appalled. Our high school coach, who was highly involved in US soccer as a player, would yank a player he felt was guilty of simulation and bench him for the rest of the game.

As my posts around here no doubt show, I have my own very strong opinions on the “right” way to play. The hallmarks of the South American game (most often attributed to Italians for some reason), intent to injure and shameful simulation, make me rage. That’s probably a product of my coaches, both in the embarrassment of having one of my teams taught to dive and my high school coach, who I respected, utterly banning it.

Too fat to keep up with the play so he had no idea what actually happened.

And Ederson is going to pussy around on the field like a flagrant douchebag, then come right back on.

He's being stretchered off. Don't be an asshole the dude got caught with studs straight to the chin.

That's a red every day.

Ederson is absolutely fine. He is a fucking embarrassment- this is exactly what I was just talking about.

At least City don’t have a backup keeper.

What about that contact requires a stretcher? Seriously?

If he doesn’t play next week, I’ll apologize. I’ll go by the body of evidence. If he has a gash from a stud, he can walk off.

The ball was close enough that I don't think there's any way to argue for the intent of a red. Whether that recklessness is worthy of a red on its own, eh... high boots have been yellows historically, short of Felipe Melo karate kicks. And there's no way Ederson's milking this IMO, that looked to catch him flush.

Regardless, match is pretty much decided at this point.

No intent, but maybe he's using a "reckless disregard" standard?
Well, there doesn't have to be intent. You kick a guy in the head, accident or no, you're off. Was just saying it sucks to get a red when he was 100% just going for the ball. It's unfortunate.

The injury does not define the referee's reaction.
Of course it doesn't...neither does Mane's intent, which there absolutely was none.

But his studs were about 5 feet high off the ground while his nearest opponent was going for a header, and he caught his opponent with those studs across the face.

Its a red.

It's not decided, but it's a lot harder for Liverpool to press and force turnovers down a man, and that's where a lot of their goals come from.

But Mane has to go for that ball. And I've argued in the past in Evra's favour when he got sent off for Man U when he went hi on a 50/50 when his eye was on the ball.

It's not a red every day. Even if it's 80/20 I take the 20 on this one. But I do respect your view. I just see it different.

Posted on the BBC website - from the FIfa 2017/18 laws of the game.

"Serious foul play - a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play."

I guess by that definition it's a red. Thing is the margins are so tight. If Mane gets that ball, misses the face, does he get carded, even though he's still in breach of the rules, going by the above.

And, to turn it around, what if the ball had been at knee level and the opponent went in with a diving header?

Saw a tweet that said with Liverpool looking hopelessly out of it against a top 6 opponent, that Ox must feel right at home.
