First of all, any excuse to post IMO James Brown's greatest jam:

Sept. 2014: Mike Fiers (then on MIL) hits Giancarlo Stanton (then on MIA) in the face with a 88 MPH fastball, fracturing his jaw, ending his season and causing him to wear a batting helmet to better protect his jaw to this day.

June 2018: Mike Fiers (then on DET) hits Giancarlo Stanton (now on NY) in the front arm with a 88 MPH fastball. Stanton was less than pleased, as you can imagine, and words were exchanged. In his next AB, Stanton hit a 456 foot HR off Fiers and pointed back to Fiers after he crossed home.

Aug 2018: Fiers is traded to the A's and 'likes' a series of Tweets including one saying 'Hit Stanton in the mouth for me'. Twitter controversy ensues.

Sept 2018: Fiers and Stanton meet again.

All of this is in this clip if you are interested, the HR is at 2:39 and is impressive.

My man Hechevarria gets another start, Didi is still on track to be activated Friday (tomorrow is an off day). Andujar sits, this is NY's best defensive infield with no Didi:

    Gardner LF
    Stanton DH
    McCutchen RF
    Hicks CF
    Sanchez C
    Voit 1B
    Walker 3B
    Hechavarria SS
    Torres 2B

Turned on my Bay Area station for the game and there’s an inaugural A’s hall of fame ceremony with Rickey, Eck, Reggie, Fingers and Stewart, Finley and Catfish Hunter (posthumously) honored. They’re just doing this now?

Haha he is so awful behind the plate. Good thing there is a DH in the AL. Problem is that's for Andujar too.

Negated a great deke by McCutchen.

Odd play by Cutch, eschews going all out on fly ball off bottom of the fence.
Sanchez with his second passed ball of the inning. Maybe a crossup. They called it a WP though ball never hit the dirt. Right thru the 5 hole.
Olson just misses homer to left. That's the third double of the inning, all hit hard and deep.

Another passed ball, and then a true wild pitch, scoring fourth run.

Note to Michael Kay: Seve is no longer the ace. Happ is the ace.

Sanchez does look a lot thinner. But his catching still sucks.

I guess it's possible to win if you can't hit, pitch or field but it sure raises the old degree of difficulty.

Severino might kill him. And it would be justifiable homicide.

If you want to compete, you need a good defensive catcher. Joe Torre went out and got Joe Girardi in 1996 and sent Mike Stanley packing.

I mean, that is the worst inning of his career, and I didn't even see all of it. He is capable of long stretches where he is really solid defensively, but yikes, really can't argue that inning away.

Severino can settle down fast and dominate. Fiers needs to do his job.

There you go, cut Sanchez out of the picture by keeping the ball up. Might not end well though

The only way for Sanchez to answer is to carry a big stick.

If Sanchez doesn't hit then he has no value. At least Bird can field his position.

Has Happ replaced Severino as the Yankees likely wild card game starter?

They’re almost certainly playing the A’s, so hard to not just go based on the last two nights. I thought it might be CC for a bit after Severino lost it in July, but he was terrible this series too and seems to be fading. It has been Happ for a while IMO, but this series made it clear to everyone.

That would be unfortunate as Happ is also the best choice for multiple starts against the Sox.
Having to pitch the wild card game would cut down how many times he can work in the following series.

Holy cow. Just looked at the box score! What happened to Severino this second half of the season? He has been so dominant and the number one for NY. Yet he has been downright human the past few months. An unmentioned injury perhaps?

It it gets down to the last Series of the season and the six have clinched they won't see Happ at all. Makes complete sense that it's all in and Happ has to pitch in the WC game. And if they win, he's gonna miss a few days for sure.

Mike Fiers looks sick. I know he pitched well against the Sox earlier in the year, but damn.

I have only seen about 5 pitches of this one, two of which got by Sanchez. I have a theory about personal run differential, if you can skip seeing the other team score 50 or 100 runs in a season, overall enjoyment level goes up. Add six to my PRD so far tonight.

I am not unhappy with taking one of three here with Didi and Judge both still out, Didi back next game should be a nice boost, looking forward to the late inning defensive trio of him back at SS and Gleyber at 2B and Hechavarria in for Andujar at 3B.

I guess I understand this Happ v. Sox meme they keep throwing out there—but why does no one mention the fact that the last pitch he threw against Boston was cleaned out by Mookie for a Grand Slam?

It was an epic AB, but could have easily had a different result. Check the Sox game thread during that AB.

So that negates the other runners he put on and the meatball to Mookie?
