'Daddy, you have been a Yankee fan for a long time, right?'

    'Sure have, son.'

'Did they really win eight straight World Series titles back then? That just seems impossible.'

'Yeah, we really couldn't believe it. My dad always talked about the late nineties teams but even he had to admit that the run starting in 2018 dwarfed it by the end.'

'So how did they break through? I remember reading they lost the ALCS in 7 the year before to Houston, then they were behind in the division race most of 2018, right?'

'Yeah, way behind Boston at the start of September. They had just started a West Coast swing against their two wild card competitors, and got outclassed in the opener in Oakland, 8 losses behind Boston in the East with 24 to play.'

'And then I guess the only way to say it is they just stopped losing, right?'

'Yep, turned on a dime and they just charged through the finish line. A couple of blowout wins in Oakland, a sweep in Seattle where they somehow beat the best closer in the league Edwin Diaz three straight times, 19 more after that including six with Boston. I'll never forget that shot at the end of the second sweep of Mookie Betts crying, and JD Martinez coming over to console him and just breaking down also.'

    'So 110-52, right?'

'Yep, won the division going away, rolled through the postseason and it didn't stop until Juan Soto Jr. singlehandedly beat us in 2026. Good times. And it all started that day after Labor Day in Oakland in 2018...'

(Yes, I realize Juan Soto Jr. would maybe be 7 tops by then, just go with it.)

Jon's idea of eight straight World Series titles for the Yankees has an air of truth for me and Coup, who were children in the 1950s when the Yankees went to the World Series 9 times in 11 years. And 14 of 16. The hate for pinstripes back then had an aura of resignation around it. Damn Yankees!
Of course, in those days only one team from each league qualified for the playoffs. The two best teams over 154 games met for the championship. Television had yet to exercise its power over baseball, or any sport.
The layered playoffs of today pretty much eliminate dynasties. If Boston rules in 2018, that will be 4 championships in 15 years. Which is pretty good. But the Sox started off last century pretty well, too. 1918 was their last championship for a few years.

Andujar wins rookie of the month for the 2nd time, here are the last 13 winners (going back to August 2016, when Sanchez came up):

    Aaron Judge-4
    Miguel Andujar-2
    Gary Sanchez-1
    Ryon Healy-1
    Yulieski Gurriel-1
    Andrew Benintendi-1
    Shohei Ohtani-1
    Gleyber Torres-1
    Lourdes Gurriel Jr.-1

So that's 8 out of the last 13 for 4 different Yankees, 5 total for the rest of the AL.

That's pretty good jon, but your Yanks are about to be kicked in the pants by the A's again.

I'm all about 2019 and beyond, the harder they flame out this year, the more leeway Cashman will have to go nuts this winter.

For Cashman, that will be a short trip.

Nice opening post; as I commented elsewhere, reminds me of what Bittrich said about the British at Arnhem, "Fool's Courage"...……………..good luck with your scenario, let's all revisit this in 2026, shall we?

    This is outstanding work, Jon.

While you’re at it, can you write me one involving Trump, his cronies, and Rikers Island?

(Plus maybe one involving sad Ivanka, Melania, and me that I’ll tell you more about via PM.)

The politics stuff is way way more depressing than NY crashing and burning, at least NY will get another shot in the spring.

Rarely do you see a lineup that might be better if you just reversed all nine hitters, and even more rarely is a lineup like that deployed in a crucial early September game.

    Gardner LF
    Stanton DH
    McCutchen RF
    Hicks CF
    Andujar 3B
    Sanchez C
    Walker 2B
    Voit 1B
    Torres 2B

A's also going with an "opener" or was this pitching change to start the 2nd injury related? (Just saw it on gameday, not watching)

Both, they have six starters on the DL. TB mostly started it because of SP injuries too.

There you go, nice AB. This lineup is working well this inning, now Hicks and Andujar get their shots, the two guys you would probably most want.

I’ve watched a ton of Mets games over the past few years and this is what he does. He can be nasty but there’s also a chance he'll forget what a strike is.
