It's so weird. They should be chanting that for Matt Chapman. He's not a strong contender, but he should get some votes.

This game is glacial. I went outside and when I came back in, couldn't believe it was only the fifth.

Last inning, I started poking at my controls to figure out why I was lagged and not on live. I finally confirmed on MLB.com.

While I'm looking at the fWAR position player leaderboards, can we also just acknowledge how tilted the talent in the game is towards the AL right now?

    Betts 10.2 fWAR
    Trout 9.8
    Ramirez 8.2
    Bregman 7.6
    Lindor 7.5

all before we get to our first NL player

    Yelich 7.4
    Chapman 6.5
    Rendon 6.2
    Machado 6.1
    JDM 5.6

So that's 2.5 of the top ten position players (Machado counts as half) for the NL, to 7.5 for the AL. That's pretty lopsided.

Barnes looking pretty damn sharp. Apart from a four hopper three inches out of Lin's reach, that was a pretty nice frame.

I wish they had done like the 9 positions in one game with Holt...that would have been awesome.

Just thinking about Devern Hansack's five inning no hitter.

The Hector Velazquez of his day.

Matt Chapman having a WAR of 6.5 does not compute for me

He's one of the best defensive players in baseball, and he has a .280/.360/.500 type line.

That's basically a good Adrian Beltre season.

I'm aware of his defensive reputation, it just doesn't compute for me. Probably why I'll never fully buy into WAR.

I could definitely see him at second to begin a game rather than Ian, who seems to have forgotten how to hit.

Is it that you think a defensive player just can't have that much impact? FWIW, here are some numbers on Andujar from the other side of the spectrum, pretty illuminating IMO.

"Miguel Andujar has the fourth-worst DRS for a third baseman on record, and the fifth-worst UZR. On grounders and liners in the vicinity of third base, the Yankees have allowed baseball's highest batting average (.382, with a league average of .224)."

Those stats started in 2003/2004, so 4th/5th worst in the last 15 years.

Also, from the comment thread there:

"Yankees have turned 9 DPs from 3B this season, the lowest total for any full team season since 1963 Houston Colt .45s."

No, I think a defensive player can have a big impact. I'm just not convinced that there really exists a good measurement to quantify it. I acknowledge that it's old school thinking, but I've just never seen anything compelling enough for me.

I agree that it's much less precise than the offensive side of things, and all of the shifting now makes it even harder to pin down. That 'grounders and liners in the vicinity of third' stat I posted is pretty damning for Andujar, though, as is the DP one (he doubleclutches on almost every ball to make sure he doesn't throw it away).

Because of no DH in the NL, pitchers come out earlier for pinch hitters, and therefore faster throwing relievers come in earlier? I wouldn’t think that would be enough though. For starters, the NL doesn’t have any great all around player like Betts and Trout. Closest might by Yelich, but fangraphs and BBREF have him with a negative for defense. Right now, the AL is superior right at the top, as you say.

I think that the high end teams have so much information and are therefore so efficient in the markets that the DH is now revealing real distortions in the AL v. NL. market.

No DH means weaker pitchers can, ceteris paribus, perform better/longer, which means weaker batters can perform better/longer what with the weaker pitchers, and so forth until you reach a different equilibrium.

From an economics POV, the DH is more productively efficient, which then drives the equilibrium quality of each league. Or some other such UChicago nonsense to suck the joy out of this game. :)

I know the second season begins Friday, but the end of the regular season still bums me out. There’s just something about having a game *almost* every day and the weather getting cooler and the days getting shorter. Maybe I need a therapist?

We shouldn’t want to win this game.

We would end the season with A .666 win %

    Bad luck.
