Thanks to a heroic comeback by Shiner's Mariners, the Yanks are three up in the loss column with five to play in the regular season. That advantage can disappear quickly if the Yanks lose three in a row.
Tanaka vs. Ryne Stanek for one innng tonight. We should thank the Rays for pitching Blake Snell on Sunday. But we also know that Tampa's bullpen, which goes by the name TBD, can be difficult to hit against. TBD is ambidextrous, throws hard and soft, and a mystery.
Some encouraging signs from Sanchez last night. Homer, four RBI, seemed to have good timing for a change. Boone has pretty much staked his reputation on Sanchez. That's fitting because Girardi's approach with the young catcher was a bit different.
If the offense is slowly waking up, that's good news. Before we get too excited about a Boston-NY playoff series, let's not forget that Oakland leads MLB in home runs on the road, and the A's love to hit in YS.
Another night game, then an afternoon getaway on Thursday.

Gleyber and Hicks and Didi all sit again, same lineup as yesterday, I think:

    McCutchen LF
    Judge DH
    Voit 1B
    Stanton RF
    Walker 2B
    Andujar 3B
    Sanchez C
    Hechavarria SS
    Gardner CF

It pains me to root for the Mariners, so I'd rather the Yankees just take care of business themselves.

Tanaka just made the dumbest play of the season. Catches a dribbler to his left with runners on first and second. Could have run over and tagged the hitter but he tries to make a jump throw to second! Wildly. 10 feet over Hechy's head. Cutch almost caught it on the fly.

Now he hits Kielemaier in the foot. Bases loaded. 3-2. 1 out.

Oh, boy! Andujar fields a deep grounder behind third, plants, takes the ball back behind his shoulder and throws to first. Late. Cone says he "long-armed" it.
27 pitches. 1 out so far. Should have three.
Tanaka just threw a rare fastball and got a swinging strikeout.

This is just Tanaka's way of seeing if the recent offensive surge is for real.
34 pitches so far. Tanaka's interpreter is now drinking sake in the dugout.

OAK/SEA last night was 3-3 after 1 too, hopefully this one ends up better for the road team.

Loaisiga is on full rest, we might need 2-3 innings from him tonight.

well he got the 2nd inning he needed, but we can't really afford a start like this next Wednesday

Things I worry about: Maybe Andujar should play even with the bag so he can't back up on grounders. Just rely on your reflexes. Letting the ball play him is not going to work with that elongated throwing motion.

Now back to an ugly game. Tanaka tried to sneak a fast ball past Tommy Pham, who hit it 437 to CF. That was in the third inning. Now it's the fourth and the leadoff guy singles. A bunt back to Tanaka who spins and throws accurately to second. One out.

Holder is warming in the bullpen. In the fourth inning.

Coup, it's going to be Happ next Wednesday because Sanchez can catch him. Cone's theory.

Two nice plays by Tanaka throwing to second that inning, the one in the first was so so dumb as Terry said.

In first innng, Kiermaier was hit on the right foot by Tanaka and now they say it is a hairline fracture. Gonna delay his golf season!

You better be back for the play-in game!

I have been on vacations with the wife where it got awkward, trying to get a score in Alaska. But honeymoons? You got no chance.

Well good news, after 3 days I've finally outwitted a field mouse who decided it was getting too cold outside. He fed off the quality cashews I left in my Ratzfatz trap (german version of a haveaheart) for 2 days without tripping the hairtrigger, tonight I lined the trap with gluepads that were his undoing....

I'm not going to miss regular season baseball and the Bleepin' Rays and Kevin Cash bringing in a lefty to turn Walker around and then bring in a righty after the lefty gets an out.

Andujar reaches after striking out on a wild pitch that swerved two feet outside. He wanted to stretch it into a double but thought better of it.

Speaking of squirrels, Bird went up to pinch hit so Cash went to the bullpen again for a lefty. Boone pulled Bird for Torres. Bird's night is over. He can shower and head downtown, maybe get laid before midnight.

Did the Yankees double pinch hit? Gameday made it seem like they did but I didn't think that was allowed.

I thought if you were announced as a pinch hitter you had to face at least a pitch? Guess not.

Been going on for as long as I have been alive. You can pinch hit for a pinch hitter. Pitchers have to stay in for at least one batter.

Wow. Ump just called two inside pitches strikes. Cutch showed him up after the first one, all nonverbal actions, flipping the bat, stepping out of the box, shrugging his shoulders, glancing in the dugout. Strike three well off the plate.

Alvarado gets Judge. Three K's in the 7th.
