Betances' K streak in jeopardy, Joe Pos may have jinxed it.
Yep, streak is over, that was the alltime AL record (most consecutive games with a K), 44. Joe Pos wrote about it today in The Athletic.
I give him credit for blocking a lot of bad pitches in the first, most of them by Sonny Gray. I think Yankee pitchers are confident he will block pitches they want to bounce. It's the passed balls that are a problem. He leads the league despite catching only 70 games.
He's rested now. I would trust him to catch at least one game in the playoffs. Sanchez isn't hitting now, hasn't swung the bat with confidence since June.
Britton does look sharp tonight. I haven't been watching since Wednesday so I am no expert on this shit. It's a good situation if Chapman gets back on track. Three power guys.
What about the rotation, Jon?
Not sure why Romine isn't catching the ninth inning. Not blaming Sanchez on that wild pitch by Britton but Cone is saying he was late to react. Set up outside. Sliders go down and in.
Sonny Gray is awarded the W.
Gardner's catch was the key play.
I may watch Seattle kick ass now.
If I had told you on Opening Day what our lineup would be going into the final week of the season, you would have wanted me committed...
I want you committed anyway.
The best part of Gray getting the win is that he was the only NY pitcher to allow a hit or a run.
Boone doesn't sound as optimistic as I'd like about Hicks, but also Boone sounds a lot like a guy who has been dropped on his head too much. Did anyone else hear him say the other night after NY clinched a spot that he was happy because 18 other teams wouldn't get that far? He is not an idiot, but he really is not as smart as I'd like (spoiled by Girardi), and this collection of talent deserves better. Come on, Brian.
Heh, Kevin Cash said that wasn't a bullpen game for NY, it was a 'closer game', starting with Green in the 5th. Those guys can go more than three outs in the coin flip game too, lot of weapons for Boone out there.
Holder also has gone right back to being dominant since that shocking implosion in Fenway. He has only given up 15 ERs all season since being called up on April 21, 7 of those were in that one Fenway game. He has a 1.16 ERA since April 21 if you take out that one game, 62 innings.
Cash hints at the one thing that makes the Yankees tough to play in the playoffs. Don't let them get ahead of you after five innings.
Boston's offense says the hell with that.
I just hope NY can get past Oakland so we can see the playoff series that will wake up the whole country. Yankees-Red Sox is similar to Tiger Woods. Everyone watches.
Oakland leads 2-1 on a homer by Lowrie. Seattle announcer points out A's have outhomered Yankees 125-107 on the road this year. Telling stat that speaks to the size of each team's home park.
