Rookie starter Sean Reid-Foley has made 4 big league starts since coming up a month ago. He has given up six home runs so far, and three of those were in his previous start against NY, to Didi, Stanton and Andujar. May many more be in his future this afternoon.

    Reid-Foley against CC, 4 PM.

Sabathia.... At this point, Tanaka seems to be the best pitcher on the Yankees (at least to me). Wild card game pitcher?

Sabathia loves toast! He will settle down for two or three innings and then get into trouble again. Yanks need to score a lot of runs when he is pitching.

Factual, but bad karma. Foley struck out the side in first inning.

Good thing I don't believe in karma.

Foley has lost it in the second. Bases loaded, nobody out for Walker.

Walker and Voit both strike out.

I hate the hyphenated last name thing. Screws up headline writers.

    Gardner strikes out.

Six K's in two innings for the hyphen.

When I saw the score, I couldn't help wondering if the thread title jinxed CC.

Throwing 87 mph fastballs doesn't help, either. He just threw three straight meatballs to Grichuk, who hit the third one out to left for his second homer in the last two innings.

Pillar drills a liner out to left. 5-0. Chad Green warming up. And Boone evicts CC, who leaves to a chorus of boos.

That was a quick hook. I am only half watching but CC's velocity was no more than 88. Maybe the Fat Man is hurt again. Not seeing where he fits into a playoff rotation at this point. Basically, the Yanks have three starters and a few question marks. Question Mark and the Mysterians might be a good thread title tomorrow.

the first two outs this inning were foul pops to first. Suzyn, baseball is a funny game.

After stranding three runners in second inning, in a bases loaded, no-out situation, Yanks strand two in third, capped by Sanchez looking at a 3-2 fastball right down the middle. Stanton did his usual soft groundout for the first out.

My luck has been running like the team: 3 days ago my main computer died and, it turned out not to be an infection but the weird death of an unimportant card within, meanwhile while searching for clues, I fired up my Thinkpad and 20 mins later it bluescreened and died (it's M.2 SSD boot drive gave up the ghost). Both have been repaired and I'm getting back to full access...

As certain as I am that Cash will be manager of the year, I'm just as sure that Andujar will be ROTY

These umpires are taking too damn long to call strikes on passed balls.

Second time this week they've done it to the Yanks

Clippard is STILL in this game? Did they run out of pitchers or something?

He’s not actually coming until Tuesday (no idea why) and he hasn’t been anything special in relief since being moved there a few weeks ago, but at least he’ll get an appearance or two in this year.

When you write the list of Yankee disappointments for 2018, Tommy Kahnle is Top 5 material. He couldn't overcome lost velocity due to injury.

Thinking this today too, Olney listed him as an honorable mention in his top 10 relievers in baseball list coming into the year, so he had him as one of the top 17 in all of MLB, and he has been dreadful all season long.

Kahnle's absence really put a real twist into the bullpen roles. Chad Green eventually admitted he was not used the same way as in 2017. So he was more inconsistent this year. Robertson's usage was all over the map. Betances had his slow start and Chapman's knee tendinitis diminished a strong season. Still, the bullpen was pretty good, just not the dominating presence we expected.

Boone didn't do a very good job either, he used Kahnle for 48 pitches on April 6 and he has been basically unusable ever since. I am pretty sure I would sign up right now for NY losing out and missing the playoffs entirely if it meant Boone would be fired after the season.

Well, that is pretty telling. I am not sure when Kahnle's velocity drop became noticeable. Strikes me it was in ST. But to use a power reliever for 48 pitches is criminal. If Kahnle was already hurting, that is insane usage by a rookie manager in over his head.

I don't think he's very smart, I wasn't a big fan of the hire to begin with and he has done very little to impress me this year. As fans, there's only so much we can tell about a manager but I didn't think he was a good analyst on ESPN, his press conferences rarely show much insight of any kind (maybe they aren't supposed to?) and his personnel management has been pretty suspect all year. The lineups are probably at least as attributable to the front office as him but the bullpen management is him and he has not been good at that all year. I highly doubt they actually fire him, but I'm also pretty sure they could do better if they did.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on Boone, Jon. I see a ton fewer Yankee games, press conferences, etc. than you do, from which to form an opinion, but I tend to agree with you. No manager is perfect (the closest that comes to mind is Francona in the 2016 post season, until the Indians ran out of luck). Sounds like Boone has too many warts though. That’s a really premier job, managing the NYY. They should be able to find many candidates if they go looking. Lot of pressure to win (2019 and on, I know). We’ll see what happens.

Whether they should fire Boone or not, I seriously doubt that a winner of approximately 100 games will be canned after only one year.

I am not a fan of Boone, either. I thought his constant references to getting Judge back was weak and disrespectful to his available players. Imagine Belichick when asked about an injured player and then contrast that with Boone’s crying about Judge.

And the Kahnle move yesterday was odd after going to high leverage relievers before him.

But again, I don’t see the fuse being this short. With the Steinbrennera, I guess it’s possible. But it seems very unlikely to me.
