16 games left in the regular season, 9 at home (TOR/BOS/BAL) and then 7 on the road ([email protected], [email protected]).

NY has a 2 game lead in the loss column on OAK for home field in the coin flip game, plus they win the tiebreaker. They will need a very good homestand with that tough last week looming.

    Tanaka vs. Estrada, 7 PM.

The final three games against Boston will be much easier than expected. Sox will have clinched by then, they will be setting up their rotation, resting guys, probably holding back Sale and Price.

Probably true, but on the flip side, they will have nothing to lose and the potential to send NY cross-country.

Some guy named Judge was activated today, but they are saying he is probably not going to hit yet, just possibly play defense and/or pinch-run.

Which outfielder hits the bench when Judge returns? Do Gardner and Cutch platoon? Has Cutch ever played left field? I will look it up.

Edit: Not a single game in LF. So I guess Gardner and Stanton share LF in the playoffs. Cutch is a backup, assuming Judge regains his stroke in time for October.

Cutch is hitting .152 in 33 ABs for Yanks. He does walk a lot. I suspect he will do better on this homestand. Law of averages.

20 straight scoreless innings for Tanaka, second best ERA in the AL since the ASB, behind Price.

All the injured and slumping hitters have enough time to get primed for the playoffs. The defense worries me because you can't fix Andujar's problems, or Sanchez behind the plate.

Scranton wins game 4 against Durham, so they are tied at 2 games apiece, winner take all for the International League championship tomorrow.

Tanaka has to start the playoff game, and then they can throw Happ twice against the Sox in the division series.

3 for 3 with two more walks, single/double/homer, good call.

Also besides the law of averages, he and Gardner both see how close Judge is and want to keep playing as much as possible.

Yeah, maybe the internal competition is a good thing.
Do you think this team got caught up in a malaise after Boston swept them? The race was pretty much decided. WC was comfy. Now it's not. Maybe they need the A's to keep pushing them. Somehow this team has to find a groove again before October, otherwise it will be one and done. And they are better than that.

Lots of reasons, Severino's best to worst regression was huge, but NY was 65-36 on the day Judge went out, 26-20 since. Freaking Shane Robinson started 17 games and managed to keep his streak of three straight sub-.500 OPS seasons going, especially impressive for a right fielder. McCutchen put an end to that finally, and if Judge comes back and bumps Gardner to a late inning defender/runner, that is another huge boost for the lineup.

FWIW, Houston has a even more extreme split with/without Altuve, 82-40 with him and 10-14 without him, not an accident that they were the top two in the MVP last year (not saying either would/should be top 5 this year even with a full season, but just below that and obviously both crucial to their still loaded teams respectively).

A run scoring on a double play when there is already one out, you don't see that too often.

(1st and 3rd, one out, deep fly to left center, the runner at 3rd tags and scores easily but the runner at 1st thought there were two outs and kept running, so he was eventually doubled off.)

That final two innings was the first time McCutchen played LF since 2009 in AAA, he almost exclusively played CF before moving to RF this year.
