So Chris Sale is in the role tonight of this wonderful new thing we have called an Opener. That’s all right, Chris, just set an example for your fellow hurlers that will succeed you out on the mound and we’ll shut down this north of the border team (they can’t hit anyway). They don’t even have Josh D. or Encarnacion or Bautista any more. Come on.

    5 innings or 60 pitches?
How about 60 pitches in 7 innings Chris?!?!!? COME ON!

I'm scared for today and need to be held.

2 innings and 40 pitchers, max, then Eovoldi.

We got this. Win today and clinch a playoff spot

During my lifetime, the Red Sox have never won more than 98 games in a season.

They can surpass that total tonight.

Damn. There is no connection whatsoever between Blue Jays and Blue Birds.

If the Sox were playing the Bluebirds, I would root for the latter.
But as they are playing the raucous, generally unpleasant Bluejays,
    Geaux, Sox!!!!!!!!

Le couleur, no? I think I've seen (mostly heard) a bluejay once in my life, in the back yard here. And, a raucus SOB it was. Keep the Toronto Blue Jays quiet, boys. You'd root for, like the Montreal Bluebirds over the Sox?

Blue jays are my favorite bird! Yes.... the’re obnoxious and loud. But gorgeous and quite smart (like me).
But we should beat the snot out of them this series

This is the proper blue jay, for comparison.

You never heard of the Bluebird of Happiness? You don't mess with that. I have put up bluebird houses for 30+ years, and they have fledged a great deal of happiness. During the time I've been rooting for the bluebirds, the Sox have won 3 World Series. QED.

Man, we get into these same bird scuffles every time we play the O's or the Jays.

Did you know the Braves were the Boston Doves between 1907 and 1910? What do you think of Doves? Then, after being the Rustlers for one year, they became the Braves and won the world series in 1914. Oh, they were the Beaneaters from 1883 to 1906. Before that the Red Stockings! I have too much time on my hands today.

semi-lead pipe candidate Russell Martin won't be around to potentially torment us this series - he's been placed on paternity leave.

My favorite bird is the loon. I spent the weekend visiting friends who live on Lake Winnipesaukee and got to enjoy seeing quite a few loons. A few came pretty close while I was drifting near them in a kayak.

And as much as I'd love to see the Sox win, more important is Sale staying on track for a return to pitching health. May it be so.

Justin Smoak leads the Jays in batting average at .248. Let that sink in.

Doves are much nicer than their cousins, the pigeons, in my experience. They are monogamous, which is a value I share. They bring their families to the bird bath to drink water every evening between 6 and 7, and coo. Their coo is nice. I don't think they have the kind of fighting spirit you find in the average pair of red socks, though.

The loon is a beautiful bird, but very nasty about territory. They are the lions of the lake, and harass and even eat the babies of other nice birds, e.g. mergansers. They are sort of like the New York Yankees, pre-2004.

Nowadays, the Loons seem more like Dodgers.

I know the 2001 Sox were bad but they don’t need to eulogize them like this.

At this rate 40 pitches are going to be up before the 2nd ends.

Sale looks so deliberate. And his command is not great. And where is the good slider?

Dumb question, but why would they say a pitch count as a opener? So they just wait out for him to get to 40.

DOB and Eck made a similar point, I agree with all of you. His pace seems really slow. His Baltimore start was so crisp in comparison.
