Yanks finish up this road trip in Minnesota, where the Twins are 41-30 in home games this season. They sit in second place in the AL Central. Their best pitcher, Kyle Gibson, will be on the mound tonight.
New York will send J.A. Happ to the mound. Where would the Yanks be without Happ?
The homer happy Bombers are 41-30 in road games this season.
Aaron Boone's struggling club is just three games up on Oakland for home field in the WC. The A's have won four in a row.
Of the five playoff teams in the AL, Yanks seem the least worthy. Their ace has gone missing. Their young stud catcher, Gary Sanchez, is hitting .181. That's not a slump. That's a bad season of historical proportions. We can safely say Sanchez is the biggest disappointment for a Yankee team that looked great until late June.
But it's never over until Yogi says so. Yanks need to get Judge back on the field and then try to make a run in the playoffs, just like last year. There is no pressure on this team anymore. Nobody expects them to go all the way. They have been reduced to spoilers by injuries and poor performance from two or three key players. The 162-game grind chewed them up this season.

Tyler Austin and Jake Cave are eagerly waiting.

In terms of his career, Austin was very lucky to escape New York. He has a chance to establish himself with the Twins.
Nobody could have predicted both Austin and Bird would have lost their jobs and someone named Luke Voit would be the September first baseman.

Boone changes the lineup a little.

    McCutchen
    Hicks
    Andujar
    Stanton
    Didi
    Sanchez
    Bird
    Torres
    Gardner

Funny, if you replace McCutchen with Judge, that is the lineup (not necessarily in that order) that we have been waiting for all year, but it's a lot less exciting now that we (almost) have it.

Won’t McCutchen reaplace Gardner when Judge is ready? Judge, Hicks, McCutchen in the OF, Stanton DH.

Probably although he has never played LF before. Stanton is also a solid LF, Judge could maybe DH coming off his injury.

But they just got McCutchen a couple of weeks ago, my point was more that we've been waiting for this lineup all year and haven't gotten it for different reasons. Now we have 8 of the 9 guys we wanted in there but it seems pretty underwhelming in reality at the moment.

Not exactly breaking news: The inherent weakness in the playoff format is a team can win 110 games and have to face one that won 100 games and has nothing to lose. And then the survivor might have to face the defending WS champion, assuming it doesn't get upset by a team that has laid in the weeds all summer long.

You sure you don't want to re-name this thread "O-Boy The Twins" ?

As a Sox fan, watching the Yankees play the Twins on a Sox off-day is like having a tv in a prison cell that only gets one channel, and that channel only plays old episodes of Becker.

Sanchez puts a 3-2 pitch into the third deck on Gibson's 112th pitch of night.

I just got banned from the Twins thread on Reddit. I let them know how I felt about their pathetic franchise.

Oh, the Yankees are beating the Twins? Quelle suprise. What a loser franchise. Kirby Puckett and Jack Morris must be rolling in their graves.

There is nothing you could have said that isn’t reality. The twins suck against the Yankees. 16 straight losing season against them. Their playoff record against them is horrific. It’s beyond bad. A team throwing games would put up a better record than the twins have had against NY since 2002. It is that bad. I did the math last year but it’s something like a .250 winning percentage when you include the playoffs. Absolutely no chance they come back in this one. Zero point zero.

I really hope Red Sox fans are enjoying this season more than they generally seem to be. Odds are they're not going to win it all (538 has them as the faves at 27 percent currently) but they are as well positioned as anyone if Sale is Sale and the Mookie/JDM duo is just insane.

The Twins vs the Yankees are like a blind squirrel that never, ever finds a fucking nut and therefore starves to death.

Edit: yes, I am enjoying this season immensely, my decades-old grievances towards the Twins notwithstanding.

Not really watching yet, so I just noticed that he did not get a start tonight against the lefty, either 1B or DH, so he's somewhat buried here too after a brief hot start. He is 3 for his last 28 with 11 Ks, we have seen that version before.

Happ and Tanaka well ahead of Severino now for the wild card start.

    I think this is right:

Yankees are 94-33 against the Twins since 2002

Four recent ALDS series between the two teams:

    2003: NY def. MIN 3-1
    2004: NY def. MIN 3-1
    2009: NY def. MIN 3-0
    2010: NY def. MIN 3-0

There was also last year's Wild Card loss. Don't know if I'm missing any others.

Really stretching the definition of 'recent' in baseball terms there. Joe Mauer didn't even play in the first two of those, let alone the rest of these guys.

Probably no Betances tonight, so maybe a Holder/Britton/Robertson combo depending how far Happ can go. He is at 91 pitches through 6.

That only makes the overall point even more. I was trying to convey "all the most recent ones" without excluding any, rather than saying that these examples were not long ago.

I once saw Wily Mo Pena nearly kill a guy with a homer that hit the back wall of the Monster seats and was still going up, but holy hell can this guy hit a freaking rope or what.

This will teach Grossman, better to emulate Kofax when it comes to playing on a High Holiday

This is a silly statement to me as this is always the case for every team still going after game 162.

    27% is pretty damn high

That was a fun inning, that Stanton ball was ridiculous. You don’t see a ball hit to dead center too often that not only does the CF have no chance on, but also bounces before the warning track.

That was the first time McCutchen and Hicks batted 1/2, they walked five times between them and the whole team saw 205 total pitches in 9 innings.
