Okay, Chapman and Judge still missing but Sanchez and Cutch should add some life and much needed depth to this lineup.

Looking forward to demolishing the Tigers today. Let’s go!

So what number is McCutchen wearing? I heard them talking about No. 21 on TV last night because McCutchen is a Clemente fan. Nobody has worn 21 for the Yankees since O'Neill retired.

    He's wearing 26 for a warmup jersey.

So the dream is that McCutchen turns into an offensive machine who reignites the offense. What are the chances? 50-50. The guy is still a good player, though he has fallen off in recent years. Pinstripe magic could restore some of his energy. And he is playing for a new contract, with an audition in October for at least one game, perhaps more.

Think of McCutchen as another Hicks although not a switch-hitter, great discipline and was second in the NL behind Votto in fewest pitches swung at outside of the strike zone. Him and Sanchez replacing Robinson and Romine should be a major boost, now if they could only pitch.

Good point. Yanks need another guy to work the count, even if some of them probably take too many strikes (hello Stanton).

Shane Robinson finally DFAd to make 40 man space, I still think Cashman was trying to win a bet there.

Though the division is arguably out of reach, it does still feel like the window is open with the way the Sox are playing. This team needs to taste blood and show that killer instinct to put pressure on them.

They showed a pretty amazing shot of what the shadows do to the ball. I would not want to hit with those shadows.

This game is so uneventful that I took a little nap, only to find out that I've missed nothing.

Another game where the Yankees offense takes the first five innings off but then explodes with homeruns in the later innings. Book it.

The Yankees offense is waiting for the Texas-Maryland game to be over because that's when FS1 will switch over to Tigers-Yankees.

4 PM starts are one of the worst things about baseball, they should be banned unless absolutely essential.

Love that FS1 had absolutely no notice or crawler that they were EVER going to switch to the baseball....completely ignored til the football was over

Close to perfect since the first three batters got weak-ass hits (Didi gets one out there and maybe two).

I really would like to see Gleyber at 2B and Hechevarria at SS until Didi is back, Gleyber just looks so much better at 2B.

    Win, we'll take it.

7 games back with 26 to go, still wildly unlikely but all you can do is win your games and see.

NY needs to go 18-8 to get to 104 wins (my personal goal), which would be only the second time they've won more than 103 since 1963.

This is crazy talk. Second best record in baseball. On pace for 100 plus wins. Would the sentiment be different if the Red Sox were having a down year instead of a historical season? Don’t get me wrong, I hate the Yankees but they are having a damn fine season, it just so happens the Red Sox have been better up to this point. Perspective....

There's not a great way to articulate this but I'll give it a shot. This year's team has lost a significant amount of games where all of the odds were in their favor. Close games with bad teams, games against bad starters, endless strings of runners left on base in big spots. We have an unbelievable bullpen that for some reason rarely looks dominant as a whole. Our pitchers don't throw strikes when they need to, our offense strikes out when they shouldn't, and our defense has contagious tendencies to string together errors. Despite a great record and significant talent, there was only about a 30 game stretch where the team really was firing on all cylinders. We have had a full lineup only 8 times this season and who knows if Sanchez will be 2016/17 Sanchez again during 2018.

We'll see what happens in September. The Red Sox have plenty of warts too but they win despite them. So, no, I wouldn't feel better about this team unless I knew that we would be healthy in October and I saw a couple weeks of hot baseball. They just need to do what they are supposed to do. If they did that, I don't care how good the Sox record looks, they'd be in first.

The best argument for perspective IMO is this:

    2016: 84-78 (32-26 after the deadline trades)
2017: 91-71 and that awesome playoff run including 6-0 at home
    2018: 86-50

You can do the same thing with personnel, Houston and Boston and Cleveland all had so many young pieces already in place when NY started this rebuild and now NY is right there with both of them. Two years and a month ago NY had Didi and Betances in place and that was it, even Sanchez and Judge had yet to come up and Severino was in the bullpen. Sanchez was 2nd in rookie of the year in 2016 (based on just two months, heh), Judge was unanimous last year, Gleyber and Andujar will both be top 3 this year. And they have been doing it all with one financial hand tied behind their backs, I have been waiting for the upcoming offseason for years (as you guys well know, heh).

I do wish that the playoff system was better and the #1 seed played whoever had the worse record between the #3 seed and the winner of the (also idiotic) coin flip game, but I have complained about that every single season whether or not NY is involved. And all four of the top teams in the AL are behemoths, no easy roads.

Really good post that puts things in perspective.
Boston is a great offensive team. The Sox hitters collectively underperformed last season. They have all bounced back this year, perhaps even over-performing. They have a better approach at the plate than any team I have ever seen.
Pitching will determine the fate of every contender in October but Boston's offense gives it a leg up on everyone else.
