Reynaldo Lopez held the Yankees to one run over seven innings back in early August. He is one of Chicago's workhorse starters, on pace for 182 innings. Lopez is 4-9 with a 4.66 ERA but as we have learned the past two nights, this is a young team that is getting better as the season wanes. Even Yoan Moncada is starting to fulfill his promise.

Yanks counter with CC, who has a tendency lately to struggle before settling down. Since the heat wave continues tonight, the over-under on buckets of sweat for CC is seven.

Neil Walker, having attained True Yankee status, should be in the starting lineup tonight. But where will Boone plug him in? First base? Second base? Third base? Right field? My guess is the latter. Stanton could use a day off.

Walker playing third tonight. Miggy at DH. Against righthanders, Walker has earned a place in the postseason lineup.

Stanton can't run down a deep liner to right. Bad route. And he has a tender hamstring. Two runs scored.

Age has caught up with both CC and Tanaka, another reason we won't have any chance to get deep into the post-season

And now Walker is robbed of a cheap homer by Garcia in right.

Jesus, Coup. Tanaka isn't even 30 yet.

Quick third inning for CC. Sweat was pouring off his visor in a tedious second inning.
Hey! Bird just doubled to right.

I am starting to understand this wounded team. They are not talented or deep anymore but they do battle.

Time for Bird to get his average over .200.

This is what they do. Down 3-0 in the fifth, Walker and Torres single. But now Bird, Romine and Torreyes are up.

So Bird goes to one knee twice while chasing curves in the dirt. And then he pops a fly ball to left. Rallies die, one out at a time.

Romine had a pitiful first AB after Bird doubled. Three pitches, chasing stuff low and away.

Now he chases, actually takes ball one, then fouls a fastball straight back. Lopez throws 95 up and in for ball two. Sets him up for the yakker. Wow. Ump calls it ball three. Right at top of strike zone. And he walks. That's a winning AB.

Torreyes takes two curves for strikes. He's normally hacking as soon as he leaves the on deck circle.

And he singles to left. 3-1. Top of the lineup coming up.

Gardner is the only guy I don't worry about in an 0-2 count.

He rarely chases. Ball one in the dirt.

And he chases a changeup outside by 3 inches.

Stanton is up with two outs.

Stanton misses high fastball and so does the catcher, who retrieves the ball and fires a perfect low strike that Lopez catches and applies to the sliding foot of Torres.

This guy Lopez has our number.

On second review, Lopez actually scooped the catcher's one-hop throw. That's a big league play.

CC with a quick sixth inning, highlighted by Hicks chasing down Moncada's deep liner to the CF wall. Hicks turned the wrong way, spun around and snagged the ball as he bounced into the wall, which has a window. A stadium worker is watching and kind of shrugs at Hicks, who breaks into a big smile. Must be nice to be that talented.

Stanton walks leading off the sixth. That's an improvement. Here comes Hicks. He homered last night with Stanton on.

Walker flies to deep left. Double in Fenway. An out here.

Ryan LaMarre having a night. Two doubles, now homers to right. That's a double in Fenway unless Mookie runs it down. Stanton had a good jump on this one. Ran out of room.

Looks like Torres jammed his left wrist slapping a tag on Sanchez trying to steal second. Tag came right down on runner's sliding foot. He isxstaying in the game.

Torres looked like he got a really late break on this, maybe because it went right through the catcher. Argh...

Picture yourself on third base. Stanton 90 feet away, capable of hitting a 110-mph liner right at you. He swings. My first instinct is to flinch.

Bird is usually late on fast balls, and every pitcher in the league knows it.

Bird flies to center. Not a bad AB. Just not enough bat speed.

Thru 8 innings. Nothing happened. Pretty much a dominating win for the White Sox, who take two of three from the Yankees.
Detroit comes in for four tomorrow thru Sunday and then the Yanks go west to die. A 4 p.m. game in Oakland on Monday.
How's that for reverse karma? This reminds me of a legion baseball game where the coach sent me up to pinch-hit with two outs in the last inning. I looked around and everyone on the bench was taking their spikes off. I walked. Pissed them all off.

Go west to die? The Mariners just got swept by the Padres and then you play the Twins.

You always undersell the Yankees' opposition. It is your calling card on this thread.

Because the opposition is usually bad outside the Big 4.

Has it been mentioned that Sean Manaea went on the 10 day DL with tendinitis? Their SP is already not their strength. They can scrap you to death though.

Brett Anderson just went on the DL too but they can just pick up someone else who peaked in 2009 and plug them in, no downgrade.
