Sevvy looking to build on some positive signs in the previous two outings and the Yankees taking out the brooms. The division lead has shrunk by 30% over the last 48 hours, how about we continue that trend?

Bundy is 1-3 with a 8.23 ERA over his last five starts, and owns a 7.96 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in his last 10 starts.

His previous 3 starts look like something only Sonny Gray could accomplish with 7 earned runs in each against Boston, the Mets, and Toronto. Let's close this out boys!

Sonny actually said these words last night:

"If I can go out and throw the ball like that, I think I can get anybody out. I know I can get anybody out. I mean, I'm one of the best starting pitchers in this league and I truly believe that."

Yes, they gave Sonny a confidence pill.

Seriously, every pro athlete has to think he is the best.

I hope Bird figures out what's wrong but if he doesn't, Neil Walker and Voit may be the first base platoon in October.

Because the Rays are too underrated for prime time?

As Michael Kay would say if he had the game tonight, "Five behind in the loss column."

Doesn't matter if we don't keep winning, NY has two games before BOS plays again, eyes on the prize.

    Gardner CF
    Stanton RF
    Hicks DH
    Andujar 3B
    Walker 2B
    Torres SS
    Voit 1B
    Romine C
    Robinson LF

Yanks finish season with four in Tampa and three in Boston. Maybe the Rays will have ruined all their arms by then.

Been thinking about pennant races and how baseball fans have followed them since 1955, when I started watching and listening and reading about the games in the variety of newspapers that were available back then.

We had radio and TV as viable options. Without the Internet and 3,000 ways to stream your favorite team, radio was really big. These guys were the voice of the hometown team. Television took hold in the 1960s and we could watch our team almost every game. And then came cable television in the 1980s. We could watch everyone.

I bring this up only because now we fans seem to overreact to everything. There is justification for this as we are so well informed. Fans think they know more than the manager. (We don't.)

This translates into Yankee fans overreacting to falling 10 games back in early August, or Sox fans overthinking a bad week of baseball.

Nothing important really happens until September. Unless you want to consider Luke Voit attaining folk hero status in August!

Also the greater proportion of the regular season took place while people were at work and begining and end of the season at school, hence the primacy of radio...

Ahh, will bore everyone with the story, early 60's, my HS was at 9 & 11 West 54th, just off 5th Ave. If you headed south you passed what was then Canada House and St. Thomas, the next block is entirely the building that was snking Ivanka and her hubby... 666 5th. Back then it's entire first floor was the showroom of...the finest TV maker in the land..'hand crafted...none of that crummy printed circuit boards..all point to point wires (yes they actually boasted of that...)...Zenith. The window had a small plastic build out so the public could manipulate the wonder of the age.. they had invented The Space Commander... the first remote control: no batteries, 3 spring loaded buttons: ON/OFF, Change Channel, Change Volume. In fact the buttons struck 3 tiny ultrasonic tuning forks which the big wooden console could hear. Color TV at it's finest: neon green field with a purple fringe around everything and people 10 deep blocking 5th Ave watching the World Series....

Amazing, thanks for that. I worked near there in the Time-Life Building from the mid eighties until 1998, but of course it was wildly different by then and again wildly different now.

The guys to my left had no idea what gloves were, or anything but a cloth cap, zero padding or armor and the spikes on their leather shoes were metal and yet they played year in and year out because I guess they were just too dumb to do anything but ignore their injuries... how did they do it ?

Nobody's bored, Coup. Your story was like a time travel for me. I can remember gathering around storefronts in suburban shopping centers for a similar experience.
This pennant race has afforded plenty of time for reflection. It's like everything is pointing to September. Getting people healthy and back on track in time to make things interesting.

Sevy going to hit 100 pitches in the fifth inning. That's awful.

Well, he kept it to 94. I guess pitch counts don't really matter because in October, five innings is a quality start for most pitchers. Boston sets up better because Sale and Price can both go deep. Happ is probably the most efficient Yankee starter.

This conversation about infield conditioning is pretty interesting. I was so angry during the ALCS with Houston's preference for absolutely drenched infields at home.

Back when bunting for hits still existed, groundskeepers would slope the foul lines one way or the other, depending on who had the best bunters. And they would wet down the dirt leading off first base to slow down Wills and Brock.

As if Bird didn't have enough problems, Voit is now hitting .357 with an OPS around 1.100.

Gleyber with an error on a routine play. Leads to another run. 5-3 after 6.

I know this is high praise but Tim Beckham would have fit in nicely on the 1962 Mets.

I think they would like to stay away from Betances today because he pitched the last two nights, so maybe Holder/Robertson/Britton is the plan.

Oh, that was still Green, somehow I thought it was Holder. So maybe trying to get eight outs from Britton/Robertson with Holder in reserve.

Oy. If Green starts the sixth like he should have, everyone gets a clean inning. Not a Boone fan.

A-Rod learning on the air of Britton's partial Dominican ancestry just now was pretty funny, hopefully we get a visual of that later.

That was close at first. I love seeing the hustle.

Another run or two would be pretty nice but I'm confident in our bullpen.

High praise indeed. To borrow a quote from one of the Met players on that 1962 team, he is not good enough to be the worst.

Just catching up, but presumably that last Gentry hit would have been a game-tying HR in NY. The NY bullpen depth is ridiculous, Chapman out, Betances unavailable so they had to use Green/Britton/Robertson for the final 3 1/3.

Back home after a 6-1 road trip, White Sox without Abreu (on the DL) for 3. Go Crow!

NY had four different pitchers get saves in the series, I wonder if that has ever happened before. Britton, Cessa (3 inning variety), Betances and Robertson.

Robertson's numbers are in line with his career stats. He was usually around 64 innings in his prime. Career-high 68 last season with two teams. At 57 right now. Probably will set a new personal record for home runs allowed. Has six so far. Seven is his high. WHIP still under 1.00. In his prime, it was usually around 1.2.
Betances is better than ever. Britton is the guy to watch, perhaps the key guy in the bullpen. If he can sharpen up his command, that would offset a diminished Chapman, who probably needs knee surgery as soon as the World Series is over.

We're thinking last week of season will tell the story for the division race. Yanks on the road all week -- four in Tampa, three in Boston. That's not good.
