I know I know...there's no way we win the division. But yet here we are, playing decent baseball and the Sox kind of look like they're floundering a bit over the last couple of series. They crush Baltimore though and we need to do the same.

So, with that, let's just take some games off the top, eh? Whattya say Happ? Whattya say kid?

Luis Cessa up as the 26th man, which means today we will likely get to see two NY pitchers we'd prefer to never see again.

Happ is leaving a lot of pitches over the middle of the plate. Even against the Orioles, he can't be successful doing that.

Yes he can against the Orioles.

I think most third basemen field the double in the middle of the Orioles rally, Andujar has really poor lateral movement.

What’s his future? Machado likely replaces him at 3rd.

Good question, I agree about Machado. I think they keep him to compete with Bird at 1B, but it's going to be a crazy offseason for NY, I think.

Remember how I repeatedly called for Andujar to get DH ABs down the stretch in 2017 and instead Girardi stuck with Ellsbury and Headley? Good call, me.

Mullins steals homer #300 from Stanton. A-Rod used to get stuck at milestone HRs a lot too, there are so many similarities between those two.

    40 HRs combined for Andujar/Gleyber.

I’m on the road and won’t be able to start another thread for the second. Let’s use this one as it seems to be working out just fine!

    You’re the boss.

Hicks blasts one, 7 HRs for NY in the first two games here.

Happ and Cessa cover all nine innings between them, good job.

    Game 2 lineup:

    Gardner LF
    Stanton DH
    Hicks CF
    Andujar 3B
    Walker RF
    Torres SS
    Bird 1B
    Romine C
    Torreyes 2B

3-1 without Didi, 5 left before he is activated on Thursday (presumably).

Yanks up 3-0 in the second. Also, I wonder what VORP is doing tonight? Glad his team is playing Boston.

NY managing to score and squander in almost every inning so far, that is rare. 10 baserunners through 4, 4 runs.

No walks for Sonny tonight. That's the Happ Effect. Throw strikes.

Perfect hit-and-run by Gleyber. He and Andujar are the best new assets of 2018 for the pinstripes.

Like to see the Statcast gun reading on Torres' throw in the 8th.

Hey friends, been slammed at work. Wanted to pop in and say this game doesn't suck.

Soon to be 7.5 back of the Greatest Team of all Time. So, still a chance.

I’m an optimistic person at heart. These standings can change very quickly with two quick streaks.

You're going to miss Romine's offense when Sanchez returns!

One game at a time, reinforcements are coming (Didi probably on Thursday, Sanchez not long after, a bunch of guys on 9/1, and Judge and Chapman sometime in Sept).

Betances breaks the alltime AL record for consecutive relief appearances with at least one K (33, Jeff Montgomery of KC in 1989 with the previous record) and he does it in style, facing just one batter and getting his first save of the year.

Will Judge and Chapman be diminished when they return? Sore wrist, sore knee.

Possibly but I don't expect them to bring Judge back until he is 2000% ready. Unless we are within a couple of games going into a Sox series, it seems like the slow approach is the most likely.

It's also worth mentioning that healthy or not, Chapman has pretty staggeringly horrendous numbers against the Sox in the last two seasons. 14 games, 13.1 14 13 11 14 21. At the very least NY would need to keep someone as an emergency guy behind him, and then what's the point of a closer?

Betances has been their best and most consistent guy for a long time, I would make him closer the rest of the way maybe even with Chapman back given those Boston stats. I know you're not supposed to make your best reliever closer if there are other options but Betances hasn't thrown more than an inning since May, make it the 9th. Since May 12, Betances has allowed a hilarious .107/.227/.148 split line. Yes, .148 SLG, 63 Ks in 27 innings and a 0.72 ERA.

Betances said recently he feels better than ever. Those stats back him up.
