NY wraps up the two game series in MIA tonight, sending Lance Lynn against rookie righty Trevor Richards, a rare non hard-thrower these days (FB sits around 91).

NY has lost Gregorius and Chapman the last two games in addition to Judge and Sanchez and Frazier, let's not add anyone else to that list. Robertson should hopefully be back tonight, Lynn could do the bullpen a favor by pitching deep tonight.

Also if the thought crosses your mind that Lynn might not be an automatic out at the plate because he pitched in the NL for so long, he was 4-54 at the plate in 2017, a Shane Robinson-esque .218 OPS, so I wouldn't hold my breath there. Maybe he can bunt if needed at least...

Neil Walker up to 5th, go Neil.

Boone said he was hoping to stay away from Robertson one more day since there is an off day tomorrow, so yeah, thin pen.

Nothing thin about Lance Lynn. He is a horse.

Classic Bird AB to end the second. Takes strike one fastball down the middle. Weak foul off fastball above the letters. Goes to one knee striking out in a changeup that hit in front of the plate.

Gleyber is at least as good a shortstop as Didi. Very smooth. Didi probably has more range but Gleyber gets rid of the ball so fast.

Stanton chases an 84 mph changeup in the dirt on a 3-2 count leading off the fourth. They remain hitless against Richards.

Richards throws change ups constantly. He walks Hicks despite a gift strike two call from the umpire.

Andujar fans on an awesome changeup at the knees.

And then Walker doubles in Hicks for a 1-0 lead.

Walker hitting .296 in last 31 games, according to Kay's stat guy. So he replaces Didi's bag and Gleyber replaces the glove.

Walker has been a legit hitter for years. He missed ST this year.

You are right. That's how the season started and that is how it may end. Offense has become a problem with Bird giving up so many ABs.

Lynn fans Sierra to escape trouble in fourth inning. Sierra has a .154 OBP this season. .154 BA, too. Probably not up for long. And based on that last swing, he will go back down soon.

Bird hitting .119 for last 61 ABs. His hits are so rare, we remember them all.

Gleyber turns 4-6-3 DP to end fifth. He's got rhythm in those feet.

Yanks seem to have a rally going. I forget what that looks like. Bases loaded, one out in sixth. Walker up. Got a new pitcher in. SF. 2-0.

Kahnle warming, finally, as Lynn passes 100 pitches and then yields a 3-run dinger to Rojas.

This team is so irritating for a team with the second best record in baseball.

After Sierra reaches on a grounder to deep third, Boone finally removes Lynn, who probably lost 10 pounds tonight.

Kahnle's first pitch is smoked to deep right where Stanton can't get to it, Sierra scores from first.

He's probably starting one of Saturday's games, either him or Gray. This may explain Boone's bullpen usage tonight.

Asked to explain Bird's problems, O'Neill uses words like "sub-par year" and "inconsistency."

Stage is set. Two on, two out, the kid who throws 102 is coming in. This might make watching this game worthwhile.

This ump does not like Hicks. One pitch every AB is called wrong, usually early in count. Hicks never looks back but he is pissed.

Tayron Guerrero cannot throw strikes tonight. But the ump calls Hicks out on a 3-2 pitch, inside corner, at the knees. 5-3 after 6 1/2 innings.

This is awful. Adams walks first two. Romine throws ball into CF on second ball four. Adams finally gets an out but run scores from third. I have had enough.

This is where I remind people that Adams has no bullpen experience and is only on the 40 man because of that emergency a few weeks ago. Too bad, Tarpley would have been a decidedly better option.

Adams was a closer in college. Yanks turned him into a starter.

That's a good point, but he's exclusively started since being moved to start 2016.

That's not the issue, the issue is that he has taken a sizable step back this season after being a consensus top 100 guy and his pro career, which always was leaning towards reliever, is looking even less promising. Chance was the best guy available in an emergency situation and he is too talented (just turned 24 this month) to risk dropping off the 40 man, so with Loaisiga (4 good innings tonight in AA) and Acevedo and German (both started pitching in rehab games this week) all better options but not yet available, Adams is semi-clogging a 40 man spot until the offseason which means he gets called up in emergencies with so many guys out. Albert Abreu is also on the 40 man, but he is currently in high A Tampa so that doesn't seem likely. Tarpley and Sheffield are probably both also ahead of Chance currently, but neither on the 40 man yet.

There is plenty of blame to go around for Adams being on the 40 man now instead of Tarpley or Sheffield, but it starts with Sonny Gray not being able to get any Orioles out in the game before the Fenway demolition so Lynn had to come in for 4 and thus he was not an option a few days later.

It can't be too often that a guy is pitching a shutout until his 99th pitch and ends up giving up five runs.

Eight more days until rosters expand. Cashman is just buying time until then, in a playoff race that is fairly well determined.

We're going to need some game thread starters to step up and eat some innings, I am 11-3 since July 28, which does not leave many wins for other people since then. I need to hit the 10 day soon and save my fingers for October, so let's see who's got some Ws in them against the dreaded Orioles (now also missing Trumbo, on the DL).

The A's lose again which leaves NY 5 ahead in the loss column for the first wild card, 36 to play.

And one game closer to the NY-TB wildcard, with Snell on the mound.

NY has hammered Snell the two games they had Sanchez this year, Sanchez has a 1.835 career OPS against Snell, 4-11 with 3 HRs and 5 BBs. Two of his worst four starts of the year were the two games with Sanchez in NY, one of the other two was the one he got hurt in July in MIN.

So I would pretty happily take that, go TB.
