Baseball's version of waterboarding visits the Yankees tonight. Tampa Bay will start Hunter Wood and then empty its bullpen as the game evolves. Wood averages two innings per start. Two innings is considered a quality start in Tampa.
Yanks are 6-6 against the Rays but have lost 5 of last 6 after starting off 5-0.
J.A. Happ goes for NY. After two starts for his new team, Happ is now the ace. He throws strikes! The bullpen is rested because Brian Cashman told Boone and Rothschild to rest the key guys last night. If you don't believe Cashman is running the show, think again. Why did he fire Girardi and hire a TV announcer?
Such a strange pennant race. Resting the bullpen and position players is a main priority because Boston is 10 games in front and Yanks are 3 1/2 games up on Oakland for first Wild Card. A's beat Seattle last night in a bit of WC infighting out West.
Yanks are 4 games up on Oakland in the loss column and 7 ahead of Seattle. Tito Francona says that is a safe WC advantage.
Tampa is 60-58 on the season. Kevin Cash would be Manager of the Year in most years but not with Alex Cora pressing all the right buttons in Boston.
Game starts at 7:05. Coup and Crow will start complaining at 7:06. Have at it, boys.

    Game is on MLB Network.

Also, my newspaper this morning printed a Newsday story extolling Boone's "calm demeanor" that helped steady the ship after the lost weekend in Boston.

The Rays have not lost a game by more than one run in over 2 weeks.

Rummy favored the waterboarding technique. And bullpen games. Same thing.

It’s been pouring in Jersey City for the last half hour or so, lots of rain in the area.

You could have also said they've lost 7 of their last 11 on the road and have mostly played at home since the break (15 home, 7 road).

Austin Romine has done a helluva job. He is like a security blanket. Yankees will miss his defense but Sanchez's power is hard to overlook.

The Stadium is right next to the Harlem River (technically now the Harlem Ship Canal)...so where do you think it's drains go ?

This former Red Sox prospect, Beeks, has 7 K's in 3 innings, the last 6 in a row. I hate Tampa.

Happ with 77 pitches thru 5 scoreless innings. 4 walks, which is weird. He took a shit between innings and the turds traveled to Boston.

First time Beeks pitches out of the stretch, Romine homers to right. 3-0. Walker's walk set it up.

If you like the bullpen games (which are all the games) now, you’re really going to love them in Sept with a 20 man pitching staff.

Only one series left with Tampa. Probably in The Trop. I'm going to visit Iceland that week.
I wonder if Cash had a seizure in the dugout? Not like him to leave Beeks in for four innings. Can you save your bullpen in a bullpen game?

Happ thru 6, 91 pitches. A pleasure to watch this guy pitch. Compact motion. Totally composed. Works fast. Is this not something that other Yankee starters could learn from, just by watching?

Andujar doubles leading off sixth. He is a hitting machine.

Bird hits a deep one to the wall in left-center. Caught easily but moves Andujar to third with one out. It's an out in the scorebook but a good AB.

Torres grounds to third on a 3-2 pitch, Andujar out at home. Torres is really pressing. 1-for-20, according to Kay's stat man.

Happ really pitches inside, on both righty and lefty hitters.
Gomez sticks his left elbow guard in front of an inside pitch to reach with 2 outs in the 7th. Kielmaier up. Hitting .176 on the season. Good thing he can field! Although I think he got a big hit against the Yankees recently.
Happ strikes him out. 7 shutout innings. True Yankee!

Adames takes Dellin deep leading off 8th but then a quick 1-2-3. Betances sets new franchise record with his 29th straight relief appearance that includes a strikeout.

Warming in the bullpen, Aroldis Chapman. He looks fixed to me!

Andujar doubles off base of wall in right-center. The kid can hit. Doesn't walk much and he takes a bunny-hop before every throw in the field.
Bird doubles over Kiermaier's head for a 4-1 lead. Kiermaier was paying pretty shallow and to pull.

Walker is coming in from right to play third in the ninth, not the first time. Defensive move as Andujar left for a pinch-runner after doubling. Robinson will pay right.

Chapman only needs 10 pitches for the save.

31 games above .500, 10 games out of first. Thus hasn't happened since 1906, according to the stat birds.

Who starts the wild card game for NY is going to be fascinating, it should be whoever NY thinks can give them the most definitely reliable 60 pitches or so. I think all five guys are candidates to different degrees, I'd probably go with Happ or Tanaka at this point depending on the other team's matchups.

Between Oakland and Seattle, the only pitcher that really scares you is Paxton and he's going through some Severino type issues right now as well. I think right now Happ checks a lot of boxes. He starts a wild card game and a possible elimination/clinch game 3 or 4.

NY now 47-4 when they get a quality start, best record in baseball history.
