they are like a box of.... well some of what's inside are chocolates and some are lumps of dog shit. You can use all your knowledge and every stat you can contrive and still find no rational explanation for what happened to Severino yesterday or our weirdly sputtering offense. This is not going to be our year, but that's OK, there is a clear path to a really competitive future...we're just wandering in the desert on our way there. My people have an unfortunate habit of doing that....

This is what rebuilding on the fly looks like. This is throwing young players into big game situations and see how they respond. And watching them stumble a few times. Seve stumbled yesterday. He had help from all over the lineup.
Judge? I think we all felt the numbers would come back to earth. Judge was a career .270 hitter in the minors.
He still gets hittable pitches but now he fouls them off, or pops them up. What starts to puzzle is how long it is taking for Judge to adjust. He is having a few clueless ABs, taking strike threes as though locked in a trance.
These final seven weeks are important. Will this team roll over and fade away?
Btw, the 2018 team will be even younger.

Huge game tonight. Yankees get 4 vs the Mets after this while the Sox play two of the hottest teams in baseball (Clev and StL).

The Mets are going to play those four games like it's their World Series, I'll be surprised if the Yankees win more than 2 of 4.

Greg Bird will start playing rehab games again on Wednesday, what a jolt he could give us if he can return to form. Castro will start rehab games on Friday.

Not a lip reader but Gardner said something to Hicks afterward and they both chuckled.

ESPN just turned this game into the Todd Frazier story.

Two more line drive outs. This can't last forever.

especially since we have shown zero likelihood of hitting since Aaron's foul

Boston takes a 1-0 lead in fifth inning of an interesting game. Bradley singled to plate Holt. Monty threw an 0-2 strike three to Bradley but the ump overlooked a perfect pitch and Bradley got him a few pitches later.

Still, it is fun to watch Monty pitch. He actually has a clue and a plan. Monty has thrown around 80 pitches thru five innings. Joe hooked him at this point last Sunday.

Sale is very good tonight but not unhittable.

Yanks tie it when Romine flies to deep right with 2 outs in the fifth. Mookie turned to catch it at the wall and misses with his glove extended. Headley, who had singled, came all the way home.

Joe pushes his luck with Montgomery and Hicks gets another one that would have been over Ellsbury's head

Mookie drills one to deep center leading off the sixth and Hicks runs it down. Monty goes 3-0 on next batter and then we have a lengthy conference before ball four. And here comes Joe, trying to keep the game tied. Robertson in for Hanley. Good move, Joe. Even Coup agrees.

and with our first dip into the box we score a fine Barracini truffle (always better quality than the stuff at Bartons).

It's crazy how good an athlete Hicks is. Just stole second off Sale, which ain't easy.

TFrazier looks at a strike three that froze his brain stem.

This game strategy is right on target, not trailing. Time to scratch out a run.

Sale must be finally tiring as he cannot be scared of Torreyes and walks him on pitches that were nowhere near the plate

Gonna be Matt Barnes in bottom of 8th.

Betances gets Benitendi on a grounder to first to end a clean inning.

3-2 on TFrazier. Bases loaded. Bottom of 8th. Liner to cf for the sac fly.

Barnes grooves one down the center of the plate at 3-2 for a sac fly to CF, we lead 2-1

Wow. Old fashioned country hardball there. 3 fastballs, see ya, Hanley. And then Devers takes Chapman out to deep left center. Reminds me of the young Cano.

and while looking accurate he delivers a 103 mph fastball to rookie Devers which lands in the bullpen as Chapman manages to find a new way to fail

Here is Reed for the 9th inning. Farrell is a shrewdie. Walk and a sac bunt bring Ellsbury up with winning run on second base. This is doomed to failure. Only one out.

Torreyes bunts him to 2nd and Romine will not hit, instead Joe sends Dreamy to the plate...I am so not a fan of this... may i be proven wrong

Dreamy grounds out to second. No. 22 who makes $22M. Now I think we are getting Kimbrel for Gardner. Just a good game to watch, all night.

The peril of not watching, I guess. Still frustrating that Chapman can't seem to ever have a clean inning against Boston.
