His era is 1.77 and he has a losing record. 2.14 over last 3 starts and he lost 2 of them. You keep their really lousy offense down, you wait him out and get to their pen. If Luis can get a grip this is doable. deGrom v. Severino on ESPN @ 7

Severino showed some great signs in his previous two starts. I think he's just about to lock back in and there's no better time than a Monday night duel between aces. Get to DeGrom early and make this a snoozer.

Very appropriate thread title. Yanks need to worry only about themselves. Fix things internally over the next month and get ready for October. Nothing else matters.

I'm not sure there's much to fix aside from getting healthy and making smarter decisions about when to use/utilize the right players at the right times.

I'm a traditionalist and I would love to go into the playoffs having a clear pecking order in the bullpen. I also would not mind if they threw Chapman on the DL for 2 weeks and put some cortisone in that knee. I read that they think a DL stint won't help but he's my biggest concern of all the pitching right now.

So even though there's not much to fix, you want to fix your closer and clean up the bullpen rotation. You want Boone to become smarter. And Judge to get healthy.
Good luck on Chapman. His health is iffy and you better get used to it. Cortisone is a temporary fix. Judge's injury is very tricky, especially for a power hitter. The bullpen rotation depends on Chapman because if he continues to go downhill, Boone may have to pick his replacement from among Robby, Zach and Betances.
Boone is only as smart as his players make him out to be. When Torres was hitting three-run homers twice a week, Boone looked really smart.

Lot of rain around today/tonight, they might have issues getting this one in again.

All valid points but nothing that is very actionable, which was my original intent to point out. It's a waiting game on Judge and Chapman and that other guy named Gary Sanchez. I wonder if there are short term fixes for Chapman that they would only be willing to do in the postseason (like pain/numbing treatments before each appearance).

I really think the issue with Chapman in his outings this week has been rust more than pain, but it's a really tricky situation. When Chapman isn't used much, his velocity and control both slip, and that's what I think we saw this week (and the weather on Saturday didn't help either). So if he was healthy, Boone could try to pitch him more often, but I don't think that is good for his knee. Presumably he will have offseason surgery, although I'm just guessing there.

A warning label should be placed as a header to the Yankee forum at SOSH. The weaker Red Sox fan may start to think, "I like these Yankee fans", a state of confusion may develop, and the weak Red sox fan may start to question "why do I hate the Yankees?" With the usual exceptions granted to all rules, all that wear the pinstripes are loathsome and detestable.

Kontos up for the bullpen, no corresponding move yet. I’m guessing Cole to the DL with “lefties-hammer-me-itis”.

NINNNEEEETEEENN EIGHTEEEENNN - Ha, I love it!!! A family member has a Red Sox mug with 1918 on it proudly displayed on a shelf. After the Red Sox (finally) won, I asked him what he was going to do with the mug now. He said I like the mug, I'm keeping it where it is.

The Yankees have selected RHP George Kontos from @swbrailriders, recalled INF Ronald Torreyes from SWB, placed LHP CC Sabathia on the 10-day D.L. with right knee inflammation, optioned INF Luke Voit to SWB, and transferred LHP Jordan Montgomery to the 60-day D.L.

Yeah, hopefully CC isn't out too long, the real question is who takes his rotation spot next time and hopefully the answer is Sheffield, not Gray.

Perfect time to use Sheffield. No pressure of a pennant race.

Sounds like CC is just skipping a start for rest, maybe another cortisone shot (the latter is just my guess).

You can do this kind of thing when the pennant race is defined so early. I really believe you have to give starting pitchers a short break before October. Normally it would be after the pennant race is decided.

You will love Sheffield. Saw him one night at McCoy. Very controlled windup. Killer breaking ball. Hits 96 when he needs it but he'sxalready more of a pitcher than a hard thrower. I had flashbacks to a young Al Downing that night. Lefty, not tall, compact motion. A little wild.

Good luck to you Yankee fans this evening. I'll have you know that I am suffering greatly having to root for these wretched misfits this evening. I know I can't expect any sympathy from you Yankee fans, because that is the way you are.

I realize he's controversial, but he knows more baseball than all of us combined...having Keith there makes me very happy...and the early returns ain't promising....sigh

See, when I listen to Girardi, I think this is true. I honestly don't think it's true for A-Rod, or at least he is terrible at conveying it.

And yeah, this isn't going well.

Fantastic pitching matchup on paper to start this Subway Series off. With no Sox game, glad to see this one on nationally.

Pedro opined to Francesa in a July interview that he had issues with showing the ball to the hitter too early, letting hitters get an earlier bead on the pitch. Seemed to suggest that he’s battled a lot of mechanical issues more generally.

There’s clearly some command problems hurting him, but to your point one would expect his velocity to get him some weaker contact more often.

I've seen him hang a number of sliders also, which may help hitters sit on the FB

I think the last clause there is key. It’s kind of a stereotype that the true greats (in any sport) don’t make good coaches because they can’t convey what made them great to people who are naturally, well, not as great.

Whereas lesser players are often forced to be more cerebral or think about the game in different ways in order to make their mark, which can prepare them better for coaching (call it the Charlie Conway Effect for the Mighty Ducks fans out there) or announcing.

One thing I’ll say for ARod is that he is clearly making an honest effort to be good at this. He’s not just out there being a blowhard.

Inexperience and expected the second baseman to get it? Still, bust it until you get called off.

Severino will new a couple of very fast innings to go very deep in this one. 56 pitches through 2 isn't great.

stumbling on the mound, stumbling in the field...and you really haven't gotten out of it when you're at 56 pitches after 2

Yanks will be one and done in October if Severino doesn't find his old form soon. How do you go from Pedro to Oliver Perez in one month?
