I'm more pissed than drunk after tonight.
Not happy at all about that.

Let's take some anger out. Severino hasn't given up more than 2 runs in a start in over a month. I'd say he is due. Our fearless leader will bring us victory!!!

With Sale against Montgomery Sunday, an upset vs. Severino would be huge.

    Win.

That chicken shit cheap ass home run last night was so MFY.

Last night pissed me off and gave me Vietnam flashbacks to pre 2004 Red Sox vs MFY's.

    Stop pissing me off.

    Win today.

Yankees stopped Red Sox late last year with a late-inning comeback win in the Bronx. Don't let it happen again. Fragility is not a good look for a playoff-bound team.

My only problem with today's game is Severino. That guy can be intimidatingly effective.

They have Nunez, Xander, and Holt for 2 spots.

A few teams are doing the same thing in the AL these days, but the three-man bench is bound to trip someone up at some point

Well, that's a bit of good news with Tanaka and CC going on the DL on consecutive days.

They don't have enough starting pitching to be a legit threat, but their ability to beat the Sox is concerning. The offense really let Garcia off the hook last night.

The biggest problem isn't OF, it's at 1B. The problem revolves around the fact that while Young can hit against a LHRP for Moreland, he can't take the field for him. And Devers doesn't have the experience to shift across the diamond like Shaw could last season.

Honestly, Marrero needs to get called up, because he's so much better with the glove at SS than Holt or Nunez, and so much better a 1B target for Devers and Bogaerts than, again, Holt or Nunez.

Plus, complete reliance for the whole bench strategy on no-vertigo-today seems really foolish.

Tomorrow, Cafardo relates some telling info on Wade Boggs talking hitting:

Red Sox coaches were glued to Wade Boggs talking about hitting before games during his two-game NESN stint last week. Boggs said the biggest difference between now and when he played is that hitters get out in front and start their swings early because pitch velocity has increased so much, and that has led to more strikeouts and popups. Boggs said he was able to let the pitch come into him before swinging. The most Boggs ever struck out in one season was 68 times in 1990. At one point in his career, Boggs popped out once in a span of about 600 at-bats.

That's one thing Devers has shown. He lets the pitch get deep on him.

Haven't verified it, but I got the impression last night the Yanks were really trying to work both sides of the plate against him.

I dont like the 3 man bench either, but Marrero isn't likely to be a better first baseman than either Holt or Nunez. At some point, don't we have to believe that Holt's issues are no longer "maybe today"? Of course they might come back, but its not like they'll keep him on the roster, unusable, until the symptoms subside., like they do for the usual type of owie.

This is exactly it. You can't rest .(250 SLG, or seems like it) Bogey because you have no competent SS backup defensively.

99% it's the one popup in 600 ABs. How can that be proven? Fangraphs doesn't even have GB% LD% FB% for Boggs and players of his era, much less any popup percentage numbers.

But there are already two guys on the roster who can play SS. "Competent" or not is in the eye of the beholder, but Holt or Nunez can fill in if needed. The short bench comes with shortcomings around the diamond, but SS is not really among them.

Are you suggesting Boggs is embellishing? I suppose next you're gonna tell me that he didn't really drink a full 68 beers on one flight?

Boggs has a track record of being pretty darn reliable in his knowledge of his own stats. There used to be a guy in CF in Fenway who would do a long "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddeeee" yell whenever Boggs got to the plate, and IIRC he zealously noted all of Wade's doings. He probably has it logged.

Back in Wade's Sox playing days, I remember hearing something from announcers like Boggs hasn't hit an infield popup all season.

This is my biggest argument for Tzu-Wei over Holt, but I don't see them just releasing Holt, which is the only way it happens before Aug 31.

Two more weeks and the bench problems go away.

One thing I do know is that Joe DiMaggio struck out 13 times in 622 plate appearances in 1941. That's probably second most amazing to his 56, you know.
