STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Syracuse DH Tyler Moore walked with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning against Drake Britton after Pawtucket had rallied to tie the score in the top of the frame and the Chiefs bested the PawSox, 7-6, Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium to earn a split in the two-game series.

Both Will Middleberooks (fractured index finger) and Mike Carp (broken bone in right foot) played for the PawSox as part of their respective Major League injury rehab assignments. Carp played the entire game in left field and nailed a two-run home run in the third inning. He finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and is now 3-for-17 in six games during his rehab stint.

Middlebrooks played the entire game as the DH and finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Middlebrooks is now 3-for-12 with two walks and a home run in four games since resuming his rehab stint earlier in the week.

Britton (1-3) walked three batters in the bottom of the ninth and took the loss. The Chiefs nearly won the game earlier in the inning on Jeff Kobernus' single to right, but Alex Hassan threw out Sandy Leon at the plate for the second out. Britton then gave up an infield hit to Zach Walters and intentionally walked Steven Souza before allowing the game-winning free pass to Moore on four pitches.

Pawtucket (46-45) has now lost four of its last five following a six-game winning streak, the last three of which have come by one run. All-Star right-hander Anthony Ranaudo started for the PawSox and allowed five runs, all earned, on seven hits in six innings.

After Syracuse plated a run in the seventh on Souza's sacrifice fly to take a 6-5 lead, Pawtucket rallied to tie the score in the ninth against Xavier Cedeno (4-0). Ryan Roberts led off with a double, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Deven Marrero and scored on a wild pitch.

Chiefs first-baseman Brandon Laird hit an RBI double and a two-run home run against Ranaudo in the first three innings to help Syracuse build an early 5-3 lead. Pawtucket had scored three in the third on Carp's two-run blast and Travis Shaw's monster solo shot to right (6).
SEADOGS

Game Story

One reason the Portland Sea Dogs are dominating in the Eastern League is pitching, leading the league with a .358 ERA.

The arms came through again Saturday as the Sea Dogs swept the New Britain Rock Cats 4-0 and 4-2, before a sold-out Hadlock Field crowd of 7,368.

Mike McCarthy (8-3) pitched five scoreless innings in the first game, while Luis Diaz (3-1) threw a complete-game (seven innings) five-hitter, allowing two runs.

Second baseman Sean Coyle paced the offense with five RBI, including his team-leading 11th home run.

The Sea Dogs improved to 58-29, the best record among all Triple-A and Double-A teams. The Rock Cats dropped to 42-42.

While Diaz is emerging as a prospect (now with a 2.00 ERA in four Double-A starts), McCarthy plays one of those valuable pitching roles on a baseball team. Just plug him in where you need him.

McCarthy, 26, a long reliever and spot starter, has actually made more starts (10) than relief appearances (seven). He is filling in for Keith Couch, who just went on the disabled list.

“Frankly (relief) is my role. But whatever I can do to help the team win,” McCarthy said. “If they need me to close, if they need me to start, if they need me to play shortstop, just let me know and I’m out there.

It’s a unique situation, but I think it’s a valuable one. It gives me a lot of versatility in my career.”

McCarthy’s ERA is 4.42, although he has only four outings where he gave up more than three runs.

“I have to continue to be effective with my pitches and stay down in the zone,” he said. “In a couple outings I didn’t do that.”

He did Saturday, giving up three hits and striking out five. Only one out was recorded in the air – a fly ball to foul territory in right.
SALEM

Game Story

Pat Light was outstanding for the second straight time out, allowing just a run on three hits in six innings to give the Salem Sox a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium Saturday night. Light walked two and struck out two, picking up his third win of the season. Cole Sulser was the loser for Carolina, going five and a third, surrendering four hits and three runs, with three walks and five strikeouts.

The game was scoreless until the third. Yhoxian Medina doubled with one out off Light, followed immediately by a double by Logan Vick to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.

Salem would answer in short order in the top of the fourth. Mike Miller led off the frame with a single. Miller's hit gave the infielder a five game hitting streak. After a groundout and back to back walks to Carson Blair and Kevin Heller, Aneury Tavarez singled in Miller to tie the game at one. Then Sulser walked Jordan Weems to bring in a second run and give the Sox a 2-1 lead.

The scored held 2-1 until the sixth. Tavarez tripled with one out and scored on a Ryan Dent sacrifice fly to give the Sox a needed insurance run.

Carolina added a run in the eight off Madison Younginer. Medina walked with one out, and scored on a two out RBI single to left by LeVon Washington to make it 3-2. Younginer finished with two innings pitched, one hit and one run allowed, with a walk and a strikeout.

The Mudcats threatened in the ninth off Dayan Diaz. The right hander allowed a hit and two walks to load the bases, but two strikeouts shut the door on Carolina's chances.
DRIVE

Game Story

Greenville committed two errors in the bottom of the ninth Saturday helping Augusta stage a three-run rally in the GreenJackets’ 6-5 win. The Drive made four errors overall in dropping their 12th straight game.

Carlos Asauje’s two-out triple in the third scored a pair of runs to give Greenville an early lead. Wendell Rijo followed with a double that scored Asauje to make it 3-0 Drive.

Greenville scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, to take a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

After Drive reliever Jonathan Aro recorded a strikeout to start the inning, Augusta’s Cristian Paulino and Tyler Horan singled and Jeremy Sy walked to load the bases. Ryan Jones then reached on an error by Greenville shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin, which allowed two runs to score as the GreenJackets tied the game at 5-5. Augusta’s next batter, Ty Ross, hit another grounder that resulted in Lin’s third error of the game and allowed Sy to come home with the winning run.

Greenville starter Teddy Stankiewicz allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings. He had no walks and four strikeouts.
Wendell Rijo

One of the Greenville Drive’s youngest players is starting to show his potential during the second half of the South Atlantic League season.

Second baseman Wendell Rijo’s batting average has started to move up as he’s been recording good at-bats in recent weeks

In eight second-half games through Wednesday, he batted .290 with a home run and three RBIs. He was batting .266 for the season with four home runs and 22 RBIs.

Rijo, who turns 19 in September, has started 66 games at second base for the Drive. He played for Greenville manager Darren Fenster last summer on Boston’s Gulf Coast League team. Fenster said Rijo was a very consistent hitter but said the young player from the Dominican Republic has had to adjust to a longer season.

“I think he’s just dealing with a lot of the ups and downs that come with your first full season,” Fenster said. “We come from a results-oriented society, and sometimes when the results aren’t there, you push a little bit harder.

“In this game if you do that, you’re going to struggle a little bit more,” Fenster said. “I think he’s finally learning that when the struggles do come, you get back to something very, very simple.”

Rijo will be an integral player for Greenville both in the field and at the plate.

“We’re definitely a much better team when he’s swinging the bat well,” Fenster said.
SPINNERS

Game Story

The Tri-City ValleyCats got to Lowell Spinners starter Heri Quevedo early and often, tagging the right-hander for eight runs on seven hits and five walks over 4.1 innings as the Spinners fell to the host ValleyCats, 9-4, Saturday night in Troy.

Tri-City (14-8) took advantage of a lead-off walk by Bobby Boyd in the first inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on a one-out home run by J.D. Davis. The ValleyCats added a run in the third inning on a solo home run by Ryan Bottger, to extend the lead to 3-0.

Lowell (11-11) got on the board in the fourth. Nick Longhi led off the inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to eight games. A one-out single by Jordan Procyshen moved the runner to second and a wild pitch moved both men into scoring position. A Mauricio Dubon groundout brought home Longhi to cut the Tri-City lead to 3-1.

The ValleyCats quickly answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, with Jose Solano leading off the inning with a double and scoring on a steal of home.

Tri-City blew the game open in the fifth inning. Quevedo struck out Davis to start the inning, but walked the next two batters before a Solano single loaded the bases. Mott Hyde delivered an RBI single before Quevedo was lifted for Emfember Martinez, who was greeted by an RBI single from Alex Hernandez. After a strikeout Boyd singled to center to plate two and push the lead to 8-1.

After the ValleyCats pushed across another run in the sixth against Brandon Show the Spinners responded for three runs in the seventh to pull within five. Back-to-Back walks by Danny Bethea and Dubon led off the inning and Mike Meyers doubled to plate both, coming around to score on an RBI groundout by Danny Mars.

That was as close as the Spinners would get however, as the ValleyCats closed out the night with a 9-4 win.

Longhi was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak, with Mars, Procyshen, Dubon, Flores and Meyers adding the other hits.
