Four GCL pitchers -- Jeffry Fernandez, Yankory Pimentel, Jose Almonte, and the rehabbing Brayan Villareal -- combined for a 7-inning perfect game vs the GCL Orioles. 10 Ks in all, half of them by Fernandez in his 3 innings of work in a 2-0 win.

The bats struggled, though, with everyone not named Rafael Devers (2/3, RBI) or Derek Miller (1/1, 2 BB, 2 R) combining to go 2-for-20 with 1 BB & 8 K.

At some point, and it isn't far, I'm going to say he's the most exciting bat I've seen in the system.

He's exciting but dreaming on numbers from the DSL and GCL is a fools errand.
It's about scouting and we just don't get enough info.

I made it a policy, as someone with limited information and access, to not pay attention to stats below A ball.

Every single report that we have on Rafael Devers is bascially "Wait til you see this kid" before even this year.

Swihart still out to prove he and Vazquez can play on the same team. Bat is going to play anywhere.

Shaw homers again. Hopefully he has a spot on the sox next year.

With Napoli under contract and Middlebrooks & Cecchini both ahead of Shaw on the corner IF depth chart, I don't see it happening. But assuming he isn't traded he'll be added to the 40-man this winter (since he's Rule 5 draft-eligible), and would likely get a few call-ups next season. 2016 would be the year he'd get a shot at sticking with the club out of spring training by winning the 1B or DH job.

If he was able to play the corner OF spots, that would probably change the equation. But he just doesn't have the athleticism or foot speed to adequately cover any ground out there.

I'd have to think the FO currently has Shaw higher than WMB and Cecchini after what they've all done so far this season.  At this point he's on an ideal track to be Napoli's replacement in 2016.  He can finish 2014 in AAA, start 2015 there and on the 40 man roster, get some call ups along the way and when Napoli's contract is over after 2015 Shaw slides right in to the first base job where he's supposed to be a good defender.

The wrinkle that might come from that is the sudden significant L/R split he's had in AAA.  For the rest of his mL career he's been a balanced or even occasionally reverse split guy, now in AAA he's got a pretty legit deficit against LHP.  If that continues he could still have a lot of value, but likely as the heavy side of a platoon with someone like Swihart or Middlebrooks, a guy who adds value at another position, being the small side.

Picture a setup where Vazquez and Swihart share catcher at about a 60/40 split while Swihart picks up the rest of his time at DH in a time share with Middlebrooks who is also the RH bat replacing Shaw at 1B against lefties would work well, not to mention have Middlebrooks available as a backup 3B and potentially backup corner OF if the club returns to the idea of having him get some work there.
