Not sure if the entire GCL team is there on their off-day, but a number of the kids have been tweeting their presence at the Trop.

Matt Barnes with a decent albeit abbreviated outing: 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K, with 57 of 93 pitches for strikes. Both runs came with 2 out in the 5th (RBI single and a bases-loaded BB).

Bats are struggling though. Just 2 PawSox hits and a 2-0 deficit.

Some roster moves:

* RHP Jacob Dahlstrand promoted from Greenville to Salem
* OF Forrestt Allday activated from DL by Greenville
* IF Aneudis Peralta reassigned from Greenville to Lowell
* SS Tzu-Wei Lin activated from DL by Greenville
* LHP Randy Perez placed on 7-day DL by Lowell
* IF Nick Moore reassigned from Salem to Lowell (went 2-for-12 with 2 BB & 5 K in his 5 games at high-A)
* RHRP Austin Maddox reassigned from Salem to Lowell (was on TIA for Salem, hasn't pitched since 5/14)

Dahlstrand's put up a 1.61 ERA, 23/10 K/BB and .250/.316/.327/.643 opp line vs 118 batters over 28 IP in his last 8 games. And that includes a 3-ER, 4-H, 2.2-IP outing in his most recent outing (7/24).

Good game going for Greenville, as Forrestt Allday celebrates coming off the DL with an RBI triple to break a 2-2 tie. Zach Kapstein singles him home to make it 4-2 Drive in the 5th.

And Allday does it again in the 6th, singling home Tim Roberson after a double for a 5-2 margin.

Jason Garcia's gone 5 solid if unspectacular innings (6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K), but he'll be working through the meat of the Hagerstown order for the 3rd time next inning.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Boxscore

Scranton starter Bryan Mitchell tossed seven dominating innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter as the RailRiders halted the Pawtucket Red Sox' franchise-record winning streak at 11 games with a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon at PNC Field in the third of a four-game series.

It was the first loss in 15 days for the PawSox, who gained 8.0 games in the standings on first-place Syracuse during the 11-game streak. Mitchell (2-1) allowed no runs and only three baserunners (two singles and one double) while collecting six strikeouts in seven innings. He threw just 82 pitches to earn his second Triple-A win.

Will Middlebrooks, playing in the ninth game of his most recent injury rehab stint, played the entire game as the DH and went 1-for-4. Middlebrooks, on the Boston DL since May 16th, is now 10-for-37 (.270) with three homers over his last nine games played. Mookie Betts collected a home run and an RBI single for the PawSox.

Scranton scored a pair of two-out runs in the fifth against Pawtucket starter Matt Barnes (5-8) to snap a scoreless tie. Jose Pirela's RBI single opened the scoring, then two batters later Zoilo Almonte walked with the bases loaded to double the RailRiders' lead.

Barnes was pulled after five innings having allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. John Ely pitched the final three innings for the PawSox and allowed an insurance run in the eighth when Kyle Roller bounced into a double play to plate Almonte from third.

Scranton reliever Tyler Webb tossed a perfect inning in the eighth, then Edgmer Escalona allowed a two-out RBI single to MLB-rehabbing Ryan Lavarnway in the ninth to end the shutout bid. With the tying runners on base, Escalona got Carlos Rivero to fly out to right to end the game and earn his second save.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs (68-40) needed extra innings, but took down the New Britain Rock Cats (52-54) 8-5 thanks to an unlikely hero in Danny Bethea, Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. The win wraps up the season series, 13-7 in favor of the Sea Dogs.

Leading 5-4 in the eighth, the Rock Cats trotted Cole Johnson out to the mound in hopes of collecting a two inning save. The righty retired the side in order in the eighth, but faltered in the ninth.

Keury De La Cruz stepped in to lead off the final inning and crushed a 1-1 pitch from Johnson over the wall in right field for a game-tying home run, his third big fly of the season.

Pete Ruiz had worked three scoreless innings after Portland's Luis Diaz worked the first five innings, but it was Dayan Diaz who tossed a scoreless ninth and sent the game to extra innings.

Diaz (1-0) and New Britain's Matthew Summers pitched a scoreless 10th, and the game remained tied in the 11th.

Ryan O'Rouke took over for Summers and struggled out of the gate. Michael Almanzar drove a single to left and with one out Jonathan Roof doubled to right and put two on with one out for the 'Dogs. Mike Brenly was intentionally walked, which loaded the bases for Bethea.

The Portland designated hitter had picked up his first Double-A hit, earlier in the game, and faced O'Rourke (1-2) with the sacks packed. Bethea smoked a 3-1 pitch to left field for a double that plated both Almanzar and Roof, giving Portland the 7-5 lead.

Heiker Meneses capped off the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to left, on which Brenly scored, and the Sea Dogs had a three-run 8-5 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.

Noe Ramirez took over for Diaz on the hill for the final inning and became the fourth pitcher used by Billy McMillon on the evening.

The tall, lanky righty gave up a one-out single to Jorge Polanco and Sean Coyle allowed Tony Thomas to reach on an error, putting the tying run at the plate in the form of Eddie Rosario. The centerfielder hit a sharp ground ball up that middle, which Ramirez stabbed and fired to second, starting the game-ending 1-6-3 double play. He earned his twelfth save in as many chances with the scoreless inning.
DRIVE

Game Story

The Greenville Drive (10-27, 44-62) put together a complete performance on Sunday en route to an 8-4 win over the Hagerstown Suns (23-14, 67-40) to take a 2-0 lead in the four-game series.

In his first game back after missing three weeks with an injury, Forrestt Allday had a big night at the plate for the Drive, going 3-4 with a triple and two RBI. Zach Kapstein, Hector Lorenzana, Wendell Rijo and Tim Roberson joined him with two-hit games in a 13-hit offensive attack.

Not to be outdone, Jason Garcia (1-1) delivered a solid outing on the mound, throwing six innings and giving up six hits, two runs and two walks with four strikeouts, while German Taveras allowed one earned run in three innings to collect his first save.

With the score knotted up at two in the top of the fifth, Allday laced an RBI triple to left field to score Manuel Margot, who singled and swiped second off Ryan Ullmann (3-1). Two batters later, Kapstein lined a single to center to plate Allday and make the score 4-2.

Allday struck again in the sixth, smacking a single to center that scored Tim Roberson, who doubled.
SPINNERS

Game Story

The Lowell Spinners jumped out to an early lead but as has been the case all too often this season, the bullpen could not hold on and the bats went quiet, picking up just one hit over the game's final six innings, as Lowell fell to the Brooklyn Cyclones, 9-3, Sunday evening at LeLacheur Park.

Brooklyn (21-22) got on the board right out of the gate, as New York Mets first round draft pick Michael Conforto laced a two-out double down the leftfield line to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

Lowell (19-24) took the lead in the second inning with Mike Meyers creating some offense. After a one-out single, Meyers stole second base, coming into score on a Jordan Procyshen RBI single, before Mauricio Dubon came around to score when Raymel Flores bunt single was throw away, giving the Spinners a 2-1 lead.

The Spinners added a run in the third after Danny Mars led off the inning with a single. After moving to second on a passed ball, Sam Travis singled through the hole to score Mars and extend the Lowell lead to 3-1.

Brooklyn chipped away at the Lowell lead in the fourth inning chasing Reed Reilly from the game after he had got a pair of quick outs, pushing across a run before Mario Alcantara struck out Tucker Tharp to leave the bases loaded and preserve a one-run Spinners lead.

The lead was short-lived however, as the Cyclones would get to Alcantara for a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Michael Bernal, who tortured Spinners' pitching all day long, delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to give the Cyclones a lead they would not relinquish.

Quite the shit show for Spinners pitching today, with none of the five arms getting the job done. Alcantara did get out of the bases-loaded jam left for him by Reilly, but then proceeded to cough up the lead and take the loss. 15 H and 7 BB for the staff, with 4 pitchers allowing at least 4 baserunners apiece and the 5th (Show) yielding 3 in just 1/3 IP.

On the bright side, Danny Mars is now batting .353/.416/.510/.926 on the season in 113 PA. He's hit in 10 straight games and has a 15-game on-base streak, while reaching safely in 25 of 27 games so far.

Jonathan Roof seems to be acquitting himself fairly well in Portland.  He's probably nothing more than org depth as a 25 year old in AA but he seems to be at least worth the Rule V flyer we took on him.

Anyone finding it a bit strange just how little power Sam Travis has exhibited so far?  The .296 average is nice, but his ISO looks like that of a middle infielder and a BB rate under 3% is a bit worrisome.

If he qualified, Mars' OPS would rank 4th in the NYPL, with all the guys ahead of him about a year or more older.  Impressive start indeed.
