Gordon Edes ‏@GordonEdes  10m
OF Andres Torres, signed to minor league deal as OF insurance, on "temporarily inacti ve" list. He has an out in Sox contract; he'll use it

Not a surprise with Victorino back, JBJ no longer sucking offensively, Holt showing outfield competence and Mookie needing time in the PawSox outfield.

One can only wonder what will become of Sox 17th-rounder Jeremy Rivera without his godfather in Boston's system.

Andres Torres has minimum of three days to figure out his next move while on temporarily inactive list.

Probably the same thing as Xander Bogaerts without his brother in the system. Big things for this one!

So much for Reilly's nice outing. Alcantara was hammered for 4 ER on 5 H & 1 BB in 1.2 IP, and Rob Smorol yielded a pair of unearned runs on 2 BB.

Lowell Spinners ‏@LowellSpinners 59s
#Spinners rallying - Jordan Procyshen with a two-run single in the 8th inning, and it is a two-run deficit, 7-5, with a pitching change.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket staked starter Matt Barnes to a big lead by scoring six runs in the first two innings and Barnes responded with 6.1 strong innings as the PawSox earned their seventh-consecutive victory, an 9-3 win over the Syracuse Chiefs Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium that completed a sweep in the two-game series.

The seven-game winning streak is the longest of the season for Pawtucket (57-48), which is now a season-high nine games above .500 and has swept two straight series following the All-Star break. The PawSox kept their half-game lead over Rochester in the IL wild card standings and moved within 3.5 games of North Division-leading Syracuse (60-44).

Will Middlebrooks, playing in the fifth-consecutive game of his most recent injury rehab stint, played the entire game as the DH and went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Middlebrooks, on the DL since May 16th, is attempting to return to Boston from finger and wrist injuries and is now 7-for-18 (.389) with a sacrifice fly over the last five games.

Pawtucket struck early against Chiefs starter Blake Treinen (6-1), who had not lost any of his prior 11 starts with Syracuse this season. Jonathan Herrera's RBI triple in the first plated Mookie Betts just two batters into the contest and highlighted a two-run first inning.

Betts then grounded a bases-clearing, three-run triple against Treinen as part of a four-run second inning that made the score 5-0. Herrera followed with a sacrifice fly as he drove home Betts for the second straight inning. Middlebrooks singled and in the fifth and later scored the PawSox' seventh run on left-fielder Jeff Kobernus's fielding error.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs (66-37) scored three runs in the third, but saved the best for last and used a run in the bottom half of the ninth to down the Binghamton Mets (60-42) 4-3 in walk-off fashion. The fifth walk-off win of the season sends the Sea Dogs to a 12-8 record over the Mets and a 35-15 record at Hadlock Field.

The game entered the ninth inning all square at 3-3 and Pete Ruiz tossed a perfect top half before giving way to the offense in the bottom half.

Jon Velasquez trotted back out for his second full inning of work and retired the first man he faced in the ninth. Blake Swihart shot a single to right field with one down and set the table for Jonathan Roof.

Roof was inserted into the game as a pinch runner for Ryan Lavarnway in the seventh and stepped in for the his first plate appearance in the ninth. The designated hitter swung at the first pitch and crushed a ball off the Maine Monster and Swihart sprinted around the bases, scoring the winning run.

Ruiz (2-0) earned the win with two scoreless, in which he allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out two. Velasquez (4-3) went five outs and gave up the run on three hits; he didn't walk anyone and struck out two.

Binghamton was silenced over the first two innings by Luis Diaz, but jumped on the board first with a run in the third. Travis Taijeron hit a leadoff single and moved to third after a two out single and walk. Diaz was dealing to Dustin Lawley, but threw a wild pitch and Taijeron scampered home, making it 1-0 Mets.

Portland couldn't get a handle on Binghamton's Rainy Lara until the fourth, where they plated three. Lavarnway stepped in with one out and tied the game at 1-1 with a solo shot to the opposite field, into the Portland, his first on rehab and third overall this season.

The wheels continued to turn for Portland as Sean Coyle followed the blast with a single to center and moved to third on Stefan Welch's single with two down. Shannon Wilkerson was next and stroked a single to left-center, which plated the duo and gave Portland the 3-1 lead.
SALEM

Game Story

The Salem Red Sox scored double digit runs for only the second time in the second half and Pat Light put together his best start of the season in a 10-0 blowout win over the Lynchburg Hillcats at City Stadium Tuesday night. Light picked up his third win in his last five starts, surrendering just two hits in six scoreless innings, striking out five Cats. As for the offense, the Sox slugged out 10 runs and 13 hits, the club's best offensive game since July 21st. Seven of the Red Sox 10 runs Tuesday night came with two outs.

The Sox started the scoring in the second. Aneury Tavarez walked with one out off Lynchburg starter Cody Scarpetta, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Matt Gedman. Scarpetta was the loser, allowing six hits and four runs in five innings.

This was only a 1-0 game with two outs in the fourth inning. But Salem got three two out hits in a row by Tavarez, Kevin Heller, and Gedman to take a 3-0 lead after four. Carlos Asuaje hit his first Carolina League home run in the fifth to give the Sox a 4-0 edge.

Then Salem broke the game open in the sixth off Hillcats reliever Benino Pruneda. Pruneda walked Carson Blair and Tavarez to start the frame, then retired the next two Sox hitters. But then the floodgates opened. Matty Johnson tripled in both runners to give the Sox a 6-0 lead. After a third walk in the inning to Carlos Asuaje, Mike Miller and Reed Gragnani launched back to back RBI singles to right field, scoring both Johnson and then Asuaje to put Salem up 8-0.

But the Sox weren't quite done. In the seventh, Carson Blair led off with a double off Navery Moore. Carson reached third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Heller. With two outs, Gedman launched his third single of the game, and scored on a RBI single by Asuaje to get the Sox to the 10-0 final margin.
SPINNERS

Game Story

The Lowell Spinners jumped out to an early lead Tuesday night but after a career-best four innings from Reed Reilly, the bullpen could not maintain the lead as the Vermont Lake Monsters rallied back for six straight runs before a late Spinners rally fell short, as Lowell started their eight-game homestand on a down note, losing, 7-5.

Lowell (17-21) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. After back-to-back infield singles by Mauricio Dubon and Raymel Flores, a one-out double by Danny Mars plated both to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.

Vermont (14-24) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning after Trent Gilbert led off the inning with a walk. A wild-pitch moved Gilbert into scoring position before he scored on a two-out double by John Nogowski.

The Spinners would add to their lead in the fourth inning after Jordan Betts led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. It appeared the Spinners were primed for a big inning, but Brett Vertigan made a brilliant diving catch in right field on Mike Meyers tailing line-drive, as Betts tagged and moved to third. A two-out single by Dubon plated Betts to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Lake Monsters chipped away at the Lowell lead in the fifth inning, greeting reliever Mario Alcantara rudely. After a lead-off single was followed by a double up the left-centerfield gap, a sacrifice fly by JP Sportman.

The Spinners lost the lead in the sixth as the Lake Monsters staged a two-out rally. After the first two batters of the inning flew out, a Nogowski walk spelled trouble for Alcantara. Vertigan doubled into the right-centerfield gap and pinch-hitter Seong-min Kim launched a double to left, scoring both to give the Lake Monsters a lead they would not relinquish. A Yairo Munoz triple plated Kim before Rob Smorol got the final out of the inning with the Spinners down, 5-3.

After Smorol walked the first two batters of the seventh, he was replaced by Oscar Perez who allowed both inherited runners to score before escaping the inning with the Lake Monsters ahead, 7-3.

The Spinners had a chance for the comeback in the eighth inning, loading the bases for Jordan Procyshen, who's two-run single cut the lead to two, but the Lake Monsters went to the bullpen and Koby Gauna induced a Dubon pop-out to end the threat.

Pat Light may finally be showing some signs of life.  That's the fourth really good start out of his last five.  His stats during that stretch:

28 IP, 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 14/11 K/BB.  Still a crummy ratio there on K/BB but he is at least getting a ton of ground balls.
