AL loses to the NL in the DR, 9-7.

Boxscore

Daniel Gonzalez was the starting pitcher for the AL, throwing a perfect first frame.

Yoan Aybar went 0/2 as a substitute.

I believe that is all the Red Sox personnel.

[As an aside, D. Gonzalez was hit by D. Gonzalez. Neither of these D. Gonzalez was the D. Gonzalez who started for the AL.]

Wendall Rijo .265/.351/.423 in middle A at 18 years old…nice!

I hope Ranaudo gets a shot in Fenway this year. He's had a great year, far better than I expected, with a WHIP less than 1 over the last 10 games

Is there any reason why we shouldn't bring up all the pitchers? If we assume Workman and RDLR are in the rotation, we add a third catcher--I really want to say Swihart but I just don't buy it--and Barnes, Webster, Ranaudo, Britton and Wright, not to mention Betts.

Is there a 40 man crunch coming up? I'm genuinely curious, by the way. We have a lot of good young pitchers who need time in the majors to prove themselves but right now, there isn't room in the rotation for them and I'm wondering whether there's room on the 40 man too.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Travis Shaw blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning to provide Pawtucket all of its runs while starter Anthony Ranaudo tossed 6.2 solid innings to win his 11th game as the PawSox completed a four-game sweep of the Buffalo Bisons with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon in front of 7,204 fans at McCoy Stadium.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for Pawtucket (55-48), which is now a season-high-matching seven games above .500 (the other time came on May 12th, 23-16.)

Will Middlebrooks, playing in the third game of his most recent injury rehab stint, played the entire game as the DH and went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Middlebrooks, on the DL since May 16th, is attempting to return to Boston from finger and wrist injuries and is now 4-for-10 with a sacrifice fly over the last three games.

Ranaudo (11-4) allowed a solo home run to Kevin Pillar (4) in the top of the sixth to snap a scoreless tie. But the PawSox came right back with two outs in the bottom of the inning by collecting three consecutive hits against Buffalo starter P.J. Walters (2-2). Andres Torres and Middlebrooks began the rally with back-to-back singles.

Shaw followed with an opposite-field drive onto the berm in left field (8). Walters had allowed only one hit over his first 5.2 innings pitched before Pawtucket's sixth-inning rally. Ranaudo allowed just three hits and one run during his 6.2 innings and is now tied for the league-lead in victories.

Drake Britton allowed an unearned run in the eighth on Brad Glenn's sacrifice fly before closer Tommy Layne retired the Bisons in order in the ninth to record his tenth save in as many opportunities.

Mookie Betts, just optioned back to Pawtucket from Boston, returned to the PawSox lineup Sunday and went 0-for-4. It was the first time in 24 games played at Triple-A that Betts did not reach base via a walk or a hit.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs (64-37) held an advantage in the ninth, but the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (47-53) plated a pair in the final inning and walked off with the 3-2 win, Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The loss sends the series to the Fisher Cats, three games to one.

The Sea Dogs led 2-1 from the fifth inning until two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when New Hampshire fired up its game-winning rally against Aaron Kurcz.

Pinch-hitters Andy Fermin and Matt Newman both drew walks for the 'Cats against the righty with two down in front of the top of the order. Dalton Pompey was next and shot an RBI single to right that plated Fermin and tied the game.

Jon Berti followed and took a single to left field, which scored Newman and ended the game, 3-2 in favor of the home team.

Both teams wasted no time and jumped on the board with a run apiece in the first frame.

Portland tallied their run, with two down, against the New Hampshire starter Casey Lawrence. Sean Coyle reached with a single through the hole on the right side and scored on a Dave Chester double down the line in left. Coyle scored with ease as he was off on hit-and-run and made it 1-0 'Dogs.

New Hampshire responded with an unearned run in bottom half of the inning against Portland's Brian Johnson and tied it at 1-1. Dalton Pompey began the game with a knock to right, which Shannon Wilkerson couldn't handle cleanly, and the runner ended up at third with a single and two-base error. Jon Berti followed with a groundout to third and Pompey scored to tie it up.

The game remained even until the Sea Dogs slid in front with a run on three hits in the fifth. Ryan Dent stroked a double to left, was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Wilkerson's single to right field making it 2-1.
SALEM

Game Story

Pedro Severino and Oscar Tejeda each hit solo home runs in the eight and ninth innings to lead the Potomac Nationals to a 3-2 victory over the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field Sunday afternoon. The loss is the Sox ninth in a row to Potomac.

Jake Walsh got credit for the win in relief, throwing two scoreless innings of one hit ball. Kyle Martin was saddled with the loss for Salem, allowing both home runs in his two innings of work. The starters were both excellent in a pitcher's duel from the start. Cody Kukuk continued his stellar July, going five innings with just a run on five hits allowed. Kukuk struck out five and walked just one. Brian Rauh was even better, facing the minimum through his four innings. Rauh allowed just a hit, did not walk a batter, and struck out five in four near-flawless innings.

For a second straight game, Tony Renda and Stephen Perez led off the game with back to back singles. Renda moved to third on Perez's single, and scored on a groundout by Shawn Pleffner to give the Nats an early 1-0 lead.

The game held 1-0 until the fifth. Carson Blair led off with a double off Potomac reliever Ronald Pena, followed by a walk to Mario Martinez. After back to back outs, Pena walked Nick Moore to load the bases. Pena left with an injury and Richie Mirowski came into a bases loaded jam. Mirowski threw a wild pitch with Matty Johnson up, scoring Blair and tying the score at one. The Sox would leave the bases loaded in the fifth with the game at 1-1.

Salem took its first lead of the series in the seventh. Nick Moore singled with one out off Mirowski and stole second. He scored on an RBI single by Matty Johnson to give the Sox a 2-1 lead.

But the lead would not last long. Martin surrendered a solo homer to Severino in the eighth and Tejeda in the ninth to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.
DRIVE

Game Story

Sunday afternoon was a beautiful day to play two at Fluor Field, but the Asheville Tourists (25-6, 66-34) spoiled the day for the Greenville Drive (7-24, 41-58) by winning two, as a pair of late-inning comebacks gave the Tourists a 3-1 win in the opener and a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Game two saw the teams knotted up at two heading to the top of the seventh. With one out, Ashley Graeter doubled down the left field line against German Taveras (0-1) and moved to third on Max White's deep flyout to center. Following a walk, Taveras uncorked a wild pitch to bring home Graeter and give the Tourists the lead for good.

Trent Blank closed things out for the Tourists with a 1-2-3 seventh to collect his third save.

The Drive received outstanding efforts from starter Jason Garcia and second baseman Wendell Rijo in the nightcap. Garcia allowed single runs in each of the first two innings, but he settled in from there, working six innings and giving up four hits and two runs with six strikeouts while retiring the final 13 hitters he faced.

Rijo was responsible for both of the Drive's runs in the game, popping a high fly ball over the Green Monster for a solo homer in the bottom of the first and cranking a line-shot over the Monster in the third for another solo homer.

Zach Jemiola (8-8) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings to win game two for the Tourists. Graeter and Raimel Tapia had two hits in the game.

Seven innings weren't enough to complete game one of the doubleheader, as the game made it to the ninth tied at one. Following a leadoff walk to Ryan McMahon, Jose Briceno drove a two-run over to left off Taylor Grover (1-4) to make the score 3-1.Sunday afternoon was a beautiful day to play two at Fluor Field, but the Asheville Tourists (25-6, 66-34) spoiled the day for the Greenville Drive (7-24, 41-58) by winning two, as a pair of late-inning comebacks gave the Tourists a 3-1 win in the opener and a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

SPINNERS

Game Story

After throwing seven innings to earn a win for the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association, right-hander Aaron Wilkerson had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox. Sunday evening, as a member of the Lowell Spinners, Wilkerson threw six strong innings, pitching the Spinners to a win over the Auburn Doubledays, 6-5, at Falcon Park.

Auburn (16-19) jumped out to a first inning lead without the benefit of a hit. Osvaldo Abreu reached on a throwing error by Raymel Flores to lead off the inning. After Abreu stole second with one out, Jose Marmolejos-Diaz reached on a throwing error by Deiner Lopez, scoring Abreu to give Auburn a 1-0 lead.

Lowell (16-20) pulled even in the second after the red-hot Mike Meyers led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a single by Jordan Procyshen. A Cisco Tellez sacrifice fly brought home Meyers to even the score at one.

The Spinners took a lead in the fourth inning with the bottom half of the order again acting as the catalyst. Procyshen got things started with a one-out single and Tellez followed with a walk. After Tellez was picked-off first, Danny Mars delivered a two-out RBI single to give Lowell the lead.

Lowell would extend that lead in the fifth inning with some two-out offense. After a two-out single by Nick Longhi, Meyers followed with an RBI triple, scoring himself of a wild pitch, to push the lead to 4-1.

Auburn would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a one-out triple by Abreu, but the Spinners responded for two of their own in the top half of the sixth. After Deiner Lopez led off the inning with a single, a one-out walk by Raymel Flores and a wild pitch put a pair of Spinners in scoring position. A fielder's choice from Sam Travis plated Lopez and a sacrifice fly from Betts re-established the Spinners lead at, 6-2.

After six strong innings from Wilkerson, Ryan Harris struggled to start the seventh inning. After a lead-off triple and one out hit batter were sandwiched around a pair of strikeouts, another hit batter loaded the bases. A wild pitch brought home one run and an infield single plated a second before Ellis Jimenez came on to strike out Marmolejos-Diaz and preserve the two-run lead.
